xiii. i don't care if you're panicking- just do it quietly
"that's right, folks." jameson continued. "peter parker."
peter's school photo, enlarged on the screen, seemed to bore into dakota's soul as she stared up at it in shock. her gaze then fixated to the real peter, who was sitting in his suit with his hands to his head, seemingly just as horrified as she was.
"a 17-year-old high school delinquent, harboring a homicidal hunger, is in fact the vile vigilante villain: spider-man."
dakota furrowed her brows in anger at this statement, but was quickly distracted by the push of people now surrounding her.
"dakota! did you and spider-man murder mysterio?" a woman next to her asked.
"what, no-" she said, turning over her shoulder.
a man on the other side of her then moved closer. "you're dating spider-man?" he pressed.
before she could respond, peter fell down in front of her, trying to push people out of the way. "hey, no, don't touch her." he said to one of the men on the side of her.
"you're just a kid?" another bystander asked.
"come on kid, let me see that face." a woman urged, moving closer to peter and attempting to lift the spider-man mask. he swatted her hand away, only for her to begin freaking out. "he hit me! spider-man hit me!"
dakota moved closer to him, looking up into his eyes through the mask. "i think.. i think we should go.." she suggested as the crowd began filming them, moving impossibly closer to the couple. she'd never been afraid to be around people before, but now she was suddenly feeling claustrophobic.
"good idea. do you have your suit?"
she sent him an incredulous look. "no! why would i have brought it? we were going to go for a swing, i didn't think i'd-"
"i'm sorry." he said simply before picking her up and frantically swinging through the city.
kodie yelped as she grabbed onto his shoulders, hiding her face in his neck. "i told you i never wanted to do this ever again!" she complained, accidentally covering his masked eyes with her hand.
"kodie- i'm so sorry, but i can't see anything with your hand in my-"
she quickly apologized, opting to just not look at anything, squeezing her eyes closed. "where are we gonna go?" she asked him, finally looking up.
"i don't know! your house?!"
dakota shook her head. "no, too far away. and avengers tower is already swarmed with cameras by now.."
planning to stop to think about their next move, peter landed himself and kodie on top of the queensborough bridge. peter's phone vibrating distracted him, and he opened it to see ned. "dude!" he exclaimed.
"dude!" ned responded.
the phone call was stopped short when dakota tapped peter's arm, gesturing to the ground below. it seemed as if the eyes of the whole city were on them. everyone on the ground below was holding up a phone, and the people on balconies and windows next to them were pointing.
"hey, pete.." she nudged him again, this time looking at a giant news helicopter, which was quickly joined by another. "we should go, we should go now."
"but you said you don't want to swing." peter argued.
she shook her head. "no time, just go."
without saying anything else, peter grabbed dakota, flinging the both of them off of the bridge. soon enough, he had swung them just outside of his bedroom window. kodie, with unsteady hands, lifted the glass of the window, hoisted up by peter.
the two fell onto his bedroom floor, and dakota immediately hopped up, helping peter back to his feet as well. "what's your plan?"
peter looked up at her. "my plan was to follow your plan!"
she ran her hands through her hair anxiously, looking over at him with wide eyes. "shit, shit, shit. this is bad. this is like.. really bad. what are you going to do?"
"i don't know what to do!" he responded, taking his suit off. "i'm panicking!"
kodie was now pacing around the room. "i don't care if you're panicking- just do it quietly."
just then, happy opened up the door, clearly thinking he'd interrupted a romantic moment. "i didn't see anything." he said, covering his eyes.
"this isn't what it looks like!" peter said, holding his arm out.
may grabbed the door to give them privacy. "i'm so sorry. practice safe-"
dakota wrinkled her nose. "may, no!"
the woman opened the door back a bit, smiling as she saw kodie. "hey! how have you been! how's pepper doing?"
she smiled, nodding. "yeah, she's... she's doing good! business as usual! yeah."
peter finally looked over at happy, noticing his stuffy face. "wait, have you been crying?"
everyone was now looking at happy as he frowned. "we broke up."
"oh."
"hey, spider-man!" someone outside yelled. peter panicked, webbing the blinds shut.
dakota wordlessly handed peter the first shirt she saw on the floor, and he took it from her, putting it on. "i didn't know you guys broke up. i thought you were in love, may." he continued, looking over at her.
"no, it was a moment in time."
peter was now attempting to get may out of his room; not wanting to be suspicious about closing all the windows. "can we talk about this in the kitchen?" he asked.
"you know, i should probably leave." happy said. "kodes, you wanna come with?"
"i, uh... i thought you guys were such a handsome couple." peter continued on.
may then leaned down to whisper to him and kodie. "you know it's really about boundaries." she insisted.
"oh, okay."
"is that the door?" happy asked at the sound of knocking.
"hey, is it true?" a nosy neighbor was asking. dakota rushed to the door, closing it in the person's face.
"i was gonna go, but- i'll stick around if you want." happy continued.
may sat down on the couch, somehow still oblivious. "i didn't know you were so awkward about sex, peter."
peter turned around, horrified. "this has nothing to do with sex!"
dakota, meanwhile, was running around the house, attempting to close all the windows.
"look," happy began, "i'm really feeling like i shouldn't be part of this conversation. i should go, but if you wanna go over it again, i mean, i'm-" a commotion outside made him go 'forehead of security mode' again, looking to it. "what's that sound?"
peter stuttered, rushing to the remaining windows to shut the blinds with his webs.
"i don't know what to do here." happy said to may. "i... I mean, i'm happy to rehash it if you want to. but i just don't-"
may shook her head. "no, you take care of your side of the street and i'll take care of mine." the commotion outside kept building, and peter found himself unable to close the last blind. "why is my phone blowing up?" may then asked, reaching for it as happy did the same.
peter grabbed their phones, holding them in his hands. "will you get off your phones for, like, five minutes?! i just want to talk to you about your relationship. okay?!"
dakota's eyes widened. "peter?" she asked, pointing at the tv behind him.
"what?" he asked, turning towards the tv. the local news station was live with helicopter footage from outside of the apartment. a headline underneath it read 'spider-man's identity revealed'.
happy looked over to peter. "is that here?"
peter opened up the blinds, the distraction over. sure enough, the apartment was swarmed with yelling people and helicopters. "okay," peter said, "maybe.. maybe it's not such a big deal!"
