viii. it appears you are bleeding out

"so is there anything you want to tell us about your girlfriend?" fury asked peter once he arrived in berlin.

"he's talking about edith." hill clarified, seeing in peter's eyes that he'd gotten protective about a potential mention of dakota.

peter frowned as he realized that they knew about him transferring the information to beck, and began to get nervous as he remembered he hadn't even told dakota that.

"i know i made a mistake, and i'm sorry, but he is not who you think he is." he said. "beck is a liar. mysterio, the elementals, it's all fake. he has some sort of illusion tech-- kodie thinks it's stark technology. that's how he tricked you, and tricked me into giving him edith." he tossed the device onto the table in front of him. "it's a projector. i pulled it off the fire monster in prague."

fury furrowed his brows. "so all that death and destruction we witnessed was created by this?"

he shook his head. "no, not just this. i think he's using drones."

"well, if this is true, then beck's very dangerous and we need to be smart." fury replied. "who else did you tell about this?"

peter zoned out as he began to feel his.. peter tingle, or whatever may had called it, going crazy. "he's here." he mumbled, looking up.

as soon as he spoke, hill, along with half of the building, disappeared. "it's just an illu- fury!" peter yelled as the man fell to the ground, shot by a drone. the drone then shot peter, sending him tumbling down a staircase.

"wow, peter, wow." beck's voice echoed throughout the open room. "i thought we were close. fury always had to die, but not you." drones surrounded peter now, their green lasers pointed at his chest.

peter struggled to his feet, looking around. "stop hiding, beck!" he yelled, webbing one of the drones only to watch it dematerialize. the room followed suit, and peter watched as everything around him disappeared. he was now in his old red and blue suit, and in a complete black nothingness.

"i tried to help you walk away. now you're making me do this. you told me you were just a kid." beck said to peter, who attempted to shoot a web, only for green smoke to spray from his hands. mysterio was suddenly behind him, his voice still echoing around the expanse. "you told me..." peter attempted to punch him, only for his figure to turn a brick pillar, "you were in love with the stark girl."

"peter?" kodie yelled.

he ran after the sound of her voice, bursting through a door only to realize he was now on top of the eiffel tower.

peter's jaw clenched as he watched dakota materialize, her hair blowing in the wind. "peter?" she asked softly, turning to look over at him. "what's going on?" she asked.

"i know this isn't real." peter said defensively, shaking his head.

suddenly, dakota's neck was grabbed by mysterio, who had materialized out of the full moon behind her. "do you, though?" beck asked, dropping her. peter immediately dove after her, screaming. "i don't think you know what's real, peter." peter's name echoed through his ears, and he held his hands up to his ears, shaking his head. "you need to wake up!" beck yelled, his voice distorted. glass shards then fell all around peter, surrounding him. "i mean, look at yourself."

peter reached out to touch the glass, shocked when the version of himself inside came to life and began to attack him. hundreds of spidermen then piled up on top of him, each one erupting from the mirrors.

"you are just a scared little kid in a sweat suit." beck told him, and peter looked around to see that he was now in his handmade suit, standing on a sculpture of captain america's shield. "i created mysterio to give the world someone to believe in. i control the truth. mysterio is the truth." he said, dropping behind peter.

he threw blasts at peter, which he dodged, attempting to throw webs at him. he was just an illusion, though, and the webs went through his body and knocked down a giant pipe. peter backed away, doing flips as he tried to get out of dodge. beck continued shooting green blasts at him until peter knocked over a set of rubble, landing in front of a gravestone that read 'anthony edward stark'.

"if you were good enough, maybe tony would still be alive." beck said.

an iron fist then erupted from the ground, and peter screamed as a rotted, bug infested iron man sprouted out from his own grave.

"deep down, you know i'm right." beck said as hundreds of mysterios materialized. peter got lost in them, falling down onto snow that ended up just being a snowglobe.

"you made your choice. and all you had to do was step aside. and now you have-" beck was cut off by the sound of a gun.

peter was now outside of the building, and he watched as fury lowered his gun, standing behind beck. "fury." peter panted, watching as shield agents surrounded beck, pointing guns at him.

"beck's people are trying to find everyone who could expose him." fury said, walking over to peter. "who'd you tell? i know you told someone, so just tell me. who did you tell?" when peter didn't answer, he raised his voice. "who else did you tell?!"

peter shook his head. "just ned and mj from my class. and obviously kodie, but you know that. and maybe ned told his girlfriend betty, but that's it." he looked up as fury chuckled."what?"

"you are so gullible." he replied.

"what?"

"you're smart as a whip." fury replied. "just a sucker." he then turned into the real beck, gated by two drones. "and now all your friends have to die. it's easy to fool people when they're already fooling themselves." he said. "i kidnapped your stark girl, by the way. maybe she'll be some motivation for you to stay out of my way." he showed a projected image of kodie strapped to a chair, struggling against her restraints. "but for what it's worth, peter, i really am sorry."

then peter was hit by a train.

peter woke up behind bars, covered with someone else's shirt, and squished between three men in orange. "where am i?" he asked.

"municipal holding facility." the man furthest from him, covered in orange, red, white, and blue paint, said.

"they said they found you unconscious at the train yard. very dangerous." the man next to him, who had a orange hat and shirt on, scolded.

"and we gave you the shirt because you seemed a bit cold." the man peter was unaware he was leaning on, said. he, too, was covered in paint and had a hat with horns, out from which an orange wig fell onto his shoulders.

"thanks." peter said breathlessly. "you guys are nice. you speak really good english."

"welcome to the netherlands." they all said in unison.

peter noticed a fourth man laying on the floor, and he furrowed his brows, not realizing just how far the train had taken him. "i'm in the netherlands right now?"

"yep."

"bye." peter said, tossing the shirt off of himself and limping to the cell gates. "guard!" he called.

"the guard is on a break. probably talking to his wife." the guy with the hat said.

"yeah, she's pregnant."

"oh, yeah?"

peter didn't listen, reaching around the bars and breaking the cell lock. he effortlessly opened the door, pausing as he walked by an office. the man inside (the guard, he assumed) was on the phone, wearing his black mask.

"night monkey. yeah." he said to his wife on the phone.

peter walked out of the building, looking around in confusion. he tossed on the orange shirt that had been his blanket before, walking over to a man. "could i borrow your phone?" he asked, surprised when the man didn't question handing his phone over. "everyone is so nice here." he said, dialing what was probably the only number he knew. "pick up, pick up, pick up. hey, hey i messed up. i need a... i need a ride. where am i?" he turned to the cheese farmer whose phone he'd borrowed. "where am i, sir?"

"it's broek op langedijk." he replied with a smile.

peter went to repeat the name, but quickly realized he wasn't going to be able to say that. "hang on. could you say that into there?" he asked as he handed the phone back to the man.

"peter? are you okay?" happy asked as he got off the jet.

peter walked across the field of flowers. "happy, is that you?"

the man gave him an incredulous look. "yeah, of course it's me."

he'd been through enough illusions for one day, though, and held up his hand. "stop! tell me something only you would know."

happy paused. "only i would know..." he thought for a moment before nodding. "remember when we went to germany?" he asked. "you pay-per-viewed a video in your room? they didn't list the titles, but i could tell by the price it was an adult film. and you didn't know how i knew-"

peter shook his head, embarrassed. "okay, fine! it's you. stop." he then collapsed into happy's arms with a hug. "it's so good to see you."

he looked down at him, hugging him back. "you'll have to tell me what the hell is going on here."

"kodie's in trouble." he said, watching as happy immediately became much more concerned. "and i'm afraid this guy's gonna kill her."

dakota felt like she was being watched. it was one of those weird moments, like walking down the street and feeling a pair of eyes on you. she knew what it was like to be watched; what with being a superhero and having a billionaire father. but something felt off.

it turned out to be just, ya know, two missile drones approaching her. one of them shot at her feet, immediately alerting her of its presence. she quickly made a swift move to kick it, stomping it hard enough that it broke.

dakota knelt down to inspect the drone, recognizing the model before noticing the small 'stark industries' sticker on the side of it. she bit her lip, wondering if these were the kinds of drones that beck was using, and, if so, if this meant he was trying to go after her.

she hadn't seen the other done, though, and it shot at her then, hitting her in the back. she fell, and the drone moved around her body to hit her again in the stomach, just barely missing her heart.

kodie, still on the ground, moved to press her watch, groaning as her suit formed around her to protect her body from any more blasts. "j.e.e.p." she mumbled to her ai. "do a body scan, please." she winced as she began to feel the blood starting to pour from her side.

"miss stark, it appears you are bleeding out." she groaned as the ai spoke. "you have two fractured ribs, as well as a damage to one of your organs. your survival rate is 20%." it said in its monotone voice.

"lovely." dakota mumbled before her head hit the ground, and everything went black.
