Chapter 10
Lalianus had to admit that Venneth's point about his new clothing distracting people away from Torryn seemed to have worked because everyone kept looking at him.
Lalianus wasn't sure how to feel about that, but then it shouldn't feel much more different than when he had been in the sky. Plenty of humans looked up at him and his siblings each night.
Lalianus still kept an eye on his Torryn, though. He didn't want anyone to bully him again.
The hospital looked so much grander than Lalianus had expected. Most human buildings seemed to be rectangles with pointy roofs. This building had a pointy roof, to be fair, but in a completely different way.
The structure was an orb, with large spikes of glass sticking out of its equally glass roof. It was clearly meant to resemble his father, the sun, but Lalianus had no idea how the humans had managed to build this. It was incredible, all shiny and huge.
"We believe that your light, yours and your parents', helps our sick heal," explained Torryn next to him. "The sunrays shine light onto the patients. You'll see when we get there."
Lalianus nodded along, very fascinated by this. As far as he knew, the light shone by the stars and their parents was actually healing. At least he could use his light to heal, so it would make sense.
Men and women in dark robes with the symbols of the moon, sun, and stars sewn into them welcomed him at the door, bowing their heads and opening the large, carved door for him.
Lalianus stepped in as soon as he could, so curious to see the inside when the outside was so beautiful.
But the inside was not at all what he'd expected. He wasn't certain what he'd imagined exactly, but this wasn't it.
There were large, cocoon-like objects hanging from the ceiling, surrounded by wooden walkways in several levels. There were so many of the white cocoons that Lalianus could barely see the ceiling.
Were those beds for the injured or sick humans?
He went to the closest steps leading up to the walkways, climbing them to see if his guess had been correct. And indeed, he saw humans being tended to by the robed people.
Lalianus' heart clenched at the sight. Some of the humans were moaning in pain, some were barely conscious, but even the silent ones were clearly suffering. Lalianus hugged himself with his wings, feeling so much pity for these creatures. He needed to help them.
He flinched a bit as he felt a hand on his wing, turning to look only to see a concerned looking Torryn.
"Are you okay?"
Lalianus nodded. "Yes. But I must go heal them. All of them."
Torryn raised his eyebrows. "I do not mean to question your ability. But all of them at once might be a bit much."
Lalianus smiled, endeared by how respectful Torry kept trying to be. "I will do my best. These people need help. But you're right, this might not be doable at once. How do I decide where to start?"
A robed woman who was tending to a patient nearby spoke up then. "If I may, divine, those suffering the most are at the very top, so that the holy light of your peers may heal them first. Those are in the most dire need of help."
Lalianus nodded quickly, immediately on board. He wanted to fly up, but he was afraid of hurting someone since there wasn't much space to spread his wings.
With no better alternative, Lalianus began to ascend the walkways, wishing he could do this as a dragon. He was much more efficient with four legs. But he soldiered on, despite his slow feet, going from level to level, seeing so many people suffering.
He needed to help them all.
As he started to reach the top, he realized there were stripes of light over the patients, so thin he'd barely noticed at the bottom, but the higher up he went, the thicker and more obvious they became, until he reached the very top at last.
There were not that many sick humans here, which Lalianus was happy about. At least that. But there were still over twenty that he could see, covered with light. And they could be at death's door right now.
His father was very powerful, but he was too far away. This needed direct starlight.
Lalianus walked down the highest walkway, stopping in the middle. He should be able to heal everyone up here at once.
Spreading his arms and wings, Lalianus swirled his tail to focus himself. He was vaguely aware of the patients' caretakers standing around him, watching him, keeping a distance, but he ignored them. He only focused on starting to glow.
Soon, his light filled the dome of the ceiling, washing over the patients, but he had to go brighter.
Lalianus glowed more, letting his light pour out properly, stronger and stronger. Just a moment in, he could already feel himself get tired but he pushed on. These humans needed more to heal.
The star couldn't help but grin when he saw the previously bedridden people shifting, some slowly sitting up. It only pushed him to glow brighter even as the wooden planks under his feet began to spin.
Or was he spinning?
Lalianus groaned as he fell to his knees, the light receding back inside of him. He felt so drowsy, but not in a good way. Not like when Torryn rubbed his ears and he got so comfortable he fell asleep.
"Lali!"
Lalianus blinked as arms wrapped around his middle, smiling tiredly when he saw it was Torryn. He patted his head weakly, his eyelids drooping as Torryn started to pick him up, his tail and wings drooping down toward the ground.
"I just got tired," he mumbled, nuzzling Torryn's chest.
"You healed them though. You did it," Torryn said, holding Lalianus so close. He was so comfortable. But Lalianus resisted the desire to sleep to look. The robed humans were frantically checking on their patients who were now standing, laughing, crying from joy.
Lalianus smiled. He'd come back as soon as he gathered his strength to heal the level under this one. And then the next, and the next, until everyone was healed and happy.
A good temporary purpose until he found his permanent one.
