Star is called "reckless" and "irresponsible" back in Mewni because ever since her breakup with Tom, it sent her into a spiraling depression. To deal with it, she tried new things, which made her slightly better, but not completely recovered from her depression. At some nights, she cried herself to sleep, still remembering her breakup with Tom. But that all changed (when the [fire] Marco nation attacked) When she met Marco, and her depression vanished almost instantly. Want to know why are trusted Marco so easily? That was most likely because she wanted to be freed from her depression and to move on from Tom, which explains why she was so reluctant to the demon in BMB. The reason she attended the BMB was because she checked to see if Tom still cared. But that ended in utter failure, seeing that Tom only wanted to be her soulmate when she no longer loved him and tried to kill Marco.
