-------------
Seeing Camille flustered after we ran the scene together was probably the funniest thing I had seen that entire day. Maybe it wasn’t the most fair thing for me to have done, but come on! I didn’t want to run the scene by myself with Tom reading out Gemma’s lines. I wouldn’t be able to get the feeling right. Now, reciting my lines to Camille on the other hand – well, I pretty much didn’t need to recite much. I didn’t know what she was doing to me. It’s like she had a grasp on my heart and I just couldn’t seem to reach hers. Of course, I would never tell James the things I was feeling. Cam was his little sister. His only sister. If I messed this up at all, I would probably have to flee the country. Possibly the planet.
When Tom yelled that we were finished, I could have wept for joy. It was still fairly early and all I wanted to do was go back to my flat, make a cuppa, and sleep. James, Carson, Gem, Ava, and I started heading over to the trailers, pulling pieces of our costumes apart. We all gave our weapons to the appropriate stage hands and approached Cam.
She was so beautiful, it actually made my heart hurt.
“So who’s up for a movie at our house tonight?” James asked as the group made a circle.
“On a Saturday night? Are you kidding? I’m going out,” Gemma said, not surprisingly. I had known Gemma for nearly four years and clubs were the only places she spent more time than actually filming.
“That actually sounds fun,” Carson said.
“The movie or partying?” Cam asked him, raising an eyebrow. Carson was almost as bad as Gemma with partying, but he wasn’t allowed to drink in certain countries because he was still underage. Good thing too. I couldn’t imagine Gem and Carson partying together when they did premieres in America.
“Partying! I’ll see you guys later. I’m getting out of this stuff and getting a pint,” Carson said, instantly leaving us as we all gave a quick goodbye as Gemma followed him.
“Oh-kay then, so Ava, Liam, you in?” James asked.
“I want to, I really would, but I need sleep. I know, not very exciting, but I feel like I’m about to die and I have a big fight scene tomorrow, so I’m going to bed,” Ava said, shrugging.
“Liam? Should I even ask?”
I was planning on saying no.
Really, I was quite excited for a night in my own bed and not talking to anyone. But for some reason I didn’t say that.
“Movie night sounds great.”
Camille’s eyebrows shot straight up as she heard my response. She collected herself quickly, even if I did see a look of panic. But that wouldn’t make sense. Why would she be panicking?
“Awesome, we got one! Cam, we’re going to go get changed, I think George is taking us home tonight, so go find him.”
“Oh, you two can ride with me. It’ll be a bit easier that way,” I offered. Besides, if I couldn’t take the proximity, I could just leave. I needed an exit strategy in case I wanted to do something stupid.
Like kiss her.
“Perfect! We’ll be out in five minutes. Time me, Cammie!” James started bolting towards the trailers and I followed, trying not to spend so much time looking at the girl behind me.
I was so screwed, but I didn’t even care.
The drive to their house was silent. Camille didn’t even try for shotgun, which James wasn’t excited about. He liked beating her fair and square. The fact that she didn’t even run towards the car made him pout like a child. It almost made me pout. James was one of my best mates, definitely. But if I were to chose mate or girl, I’d chose the latter. I pulled up to their driveway and Cam scurried out before I even killed the engine.
“Is she okay?” I asked James, hoping I sounded normal and not like I was as concerned as I was.
“She’ll be fine once we get a movie started.” He shrugged, but his voice sounded like he knew something was bothering her.
“You sure?”
“Yeah man. She’s just acting a little weird because of the scene you two ran together.” What was that supposed to mean? Did it make her so uncomfortable she didn’t even want to be around me?
“She told you about that?”
“Your acting was a little too convincing. She was freaking out.” I stiffened at hearing that. I was too convincing because I barely had to act!
“Oh, didn’t even realize. Yeah, she’s never acted before right?”
“Never, so she probably didn’t know what to do with herself hearing you say that you loved her and wanted to keep her safe. But it’s cool, come on. Movie time!” James slapped my shoulder and made his way inside, while I trailed behind.
“Alright. So what are we watching then?” I said, plopping down on the couch and sprawling my body across the entire couch when we were all gathered in the living room. Cam was on the other side of the couch and I could see her scooting away from me. Or my feet. Hopefully just my feet.
“I was thinking a thriller. Or else I’ll get bored,” James offered and I nodded enthusiastically.
“Wait.” I stopped nodding and looked to Camille. “Are you going to get all scared and start quivering and screaming?” She narrowed her eyes as if offended.
“No. I’ve seen plenty of thrillers.”
“It’s true. She hardly reacts at all,” James told me. “In fact, it’s kind of boring. You try to scare her at a suspenseful moment and she just kind of glares.”
“Alright, because I have sisters. And they can never make it because they start crying.”
“Well, duh they cry! Victoria is barely twelve, you can’t expect her to watch an entire horror movie without crying. Seriously, Liam, what kind of older brother are you?” It made me happy she even remembered my sister’s name.
“Hey, I’m a very good older brother,” I told her, “but that doesn’t deny the fact that people crying during a movie ruins it.”
“Don’t worry. I’m not a big crier,” she assured me.
“Good. Because I’m not comforting you.” She looked slightly hurt by that statement and I realized that I lied through my teeth. If James weren’t here and Cam was crying, I wouldn’t waste a second to make sure she was okay.
“Wait,” I saw her lower lip start quivering. “You wouldn’t comfort me? But... but Liam. I’m a poor, little female in need of protection.” Putting her head in her hands, she pretended to cry. “Where’s the love, y’all?” She muttered. It was then I realized the unease between us was finally gone from earlier in the day.
“Sorry love, not happening.” Her head snapped up and she stuck her tongue out at me.
“Fine. Be a jerk.” I let out a bark of laughter at her attitude when James ordered us to be quiet from the floor, pointing to the TV screen. The darkness of the room giving me cover, I looked over at Camille, a small smile covering my face. She was the cutest thing and she didn’t even realize. She looked over at me, a curious look on her face, but I just gave her a little smile before turning my attention to the movie.
By the time the credits were rolling, James and I were still wide awake. Cam had fallen asleep halfway through and she still laid on the couch. For a few moments, it looked like she was dead because you couldn’t see her face due to the hair and she was lying on her stomach so no obvious breathing was happening. James didn’t care though and asked if I wanted to play a round of Call of Duty before I headed out. By the seventh round, I yawned for the millionth time and James finally caught on.
“You want to just stay here, bro?”
“Thanks, but no. I just need the comfort of my own bed and a good cup of tea. Plus, I wanted to grab some stuff from home for work. I’ll see you tomorrow. We have to be there at eight right?”
“Seven, I think.”
I cursed under my breath. “Alright, night mate.” James waved me off and I headed down the stairs.
As I hit the middle floor, I heard muttering and whimpering. I looked around the room not seeing anyone or anything. Had I started hallucinating?
Again, I heard a voice saying nonsense and the distinct sound of sniffles. Then a rustle over by the couch. Slowly, I creeped over to the couch and looked over the back. There lay Camille, curled into the fetal position, tears streaming down her face, hands shaking as she clutched the blanket under her chin.
My heart dropped to my stomach. All I wanted to do was to scoop her up and hold her until she slept soundly. But I wasn’t sure how she’d take that. She’d probably punch me.
Safety first, innit.
“Cam,” I whispered, shaking her shoulder. “Camille,” I tried, a bit louder.
She went still and silent a moment, which I was glad for. I awoke her enough to stop dreaming, but not enough to see who had done it. I smiled and started getting up, when I saw her shift a little more and suddenly her fist slammed against the side of my face.
I fell to the ground, groaning and rubbing my jaw. For a seventeen-year-old girl, she had an awful strong right hook.
“Liam!” She hissed. “What are you doing?” I looked up at her as she watched me crumpled on the floor. Her hair was every which way and she still had tear stains along her cheeks.
“What am I doing? You just clobbered me.” She looked down at her hand which was still in fist formation, probably wondering how she managed to hit me so hard in her sleep.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I just... I didn’t mean...” She still seemed shaken up from her dream as she wrapped her arms around her knees.
“Hey. Are you alright?” Whatever this dream was, it seemed like it was haunting her. Maybe we shouldn’t have watched a scary movie after all.
“Am I alright? I just punched you in the face.” Camille looked horrified that she actually hit me. “Was I crying?”
“Crying, shaking, muttering gibberish. I was on my way out and I wanted to make sure you weren’t having a seizure or something.”
“You were about to kill me,” she told me and my heart stopped. “I was being chased by a mob and then I fell in a mud pit and you were about to pull me out to kill me.” I couldn’t watch her like this. This was almost worse than watching any of my sisters have a bad dream. I studied her for a moment longer before getting to my feet and grabbing a Disney movie off the shelf. Not bothering to look which one exactly, I put it in the DVD player and, as everything was turning on, went to the kitchen to grab her a cup of water. Grabbing the controller, I sat back in my original corner and then patted the seat next to me. She gave me a curious look, almost as if she didn’t know what I was doing. At this point, I was solely being protective. I couldn’t stand watching her shake out of fear, but she gave in and scooted closer to me. I pulled a blanket from off the floor and placed it over both our laps. She continued to shake and all I wanted to do was pull her to my chest and stroke her hair to calm her down.
“Here.” I handed her the cup of water and she drained it quickly. “This is what I put on when my sisters have nightmares. It usually helps.” The screen illuminated with the Disney logo and the music filled the empty room.
“You know your Disney movies?”
I didn’t want to seem silly by saying that I knew and enjoyed every Disney movie ever made, so I merely said, “Sisters, Cam. I have sisters.”
“So what are you still doing here anyway? I mean, what time is it?”
“After the film finished, you had already fallen asleep, but James and I were wide awake. So we were up in his rooms playing some Xbox. Then I remembered that I needed to go home before work tomorrow because I forgot some things. Then, lo and behold, a crying Cam on the couch. Try to wake her up and she punches me in the face.”
“I told you I was sorry!” She said, burying her face in her hands again. I chuckled as I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. This was the closest I would get to cuddling with her on a couch and I had to accept it and leave it at that. Nothing more.
“You said you wouldn’t comfort me,” she stated as the movie flashed across the screen.
“You said you wouldn’t cry,” I replied simply. “Now hush.” She nestled deeper into the couch, not realizing she was scooting closer to me as well. Her shoulder was on top of mine, hip against hip. As the opening sequence began playing, all I could think was, ‘Whatever you do, don’t do something stupid.’
We sat in silence as Pocahontas ran through the forest. I sunk a little deeper in the couch, just to get comfortable. My arm still rested across the back of the couch as I tried my hardest not to start playing with her hair or hold her against me. She just needed a friend right now. Slowly, I felt her side being more and more pressed against me. Looking down, I saw her eyes droop shut and her head slowly rest on my chest. Her arms wrapped around my torso and with a final sigh, her entire body went limp as I sucked in a sharp breath.
What do I do now?
Obviously the only logical thing I could come up with was play with the ends of her hair. As if she couldn’t get more comfortable, I heard another sigh and I looked down to see a small smile on the corner of her lips. Was she awake or was she actually asleep?
Every minute of the movie was a war between bliss and agony. She was a comforting pressure against my chest and she smelled like spring, however I couldn’t – no, wouldn’t – do anything. I was not going to be that person. Suddenly her arms tightened around my torso and I swear I heard her sniff my chest.
“You alright there?” My voice was lower than usual, due to not talking. She looked up at me, head still resting on my chest.
“Liam... what...” She looked at the position she was in, her brows furrowed in confusion.
“You fell asleep about ten minutes in. Never thought Disney had that quick of an affect on you.”
“Disney works miracles, I swear. Anyway,” she began to push herself off of me. I should have let her get up, really, I should have just let her go. But instead I put my arm around her shoulder and brought her back to lay on my chest. I could hold her there forever and it wasn’t just because I felt like she was still scared. Not anymore
“Liam. I should probably get to bed. And you need to go home. You have work in a couple hours.” She was clearly being sensible and I should have been. Honestly, I should have just let her go to her room and I should have left for my house.
“I don’t feel like moving,” I spoke against her hair, cheek resting on the top of her head.
She sighed. “Me neither.”
It was the best thing I had heard all night.
My heart started thumping faster. The thought that maybe she did feel the same about me was killing me on the inside. I fancied her. More than fancied. But I couldn’t just attack her and ask her to be my girlfriend. Weren’t there proper procedures for these things?
I shut my eyes, trying to gain the courage for what I was about to say.
“Can I ask you something, Cam?” I asked, not quite sure if this was going to go down well. She shifted her head to look up at me. Our faces were awfully close and I found myself either focusing on her bright blue eyes or her lips.
“Hmm?” I saw her eyes looking back and forth between my own eyes and lips as I did the same.
Screw everything, I’m gonna do it.
I began to lean in, determined that I wouldn’t back down. I would go slow though, giving her time to back away if she didn’t want this. No matter how badly I wanted to kiss her, I wasn’t going to push. She craned her neck up and I watched her eyes close, while I placed my hand at the back of her neck. And then our lips touched.
It was soft at first. Nothing demanding or pushy, but it was more than I could have asked for. Her lips were soft, as I always knew they’d be. She wasn’t pushing me away and I wasn’t pulling her closer. If this was all that happened, I’d be happy. But then I felt her hands grasp my head, pulling me deeper and that was all I needed to know.
I turned my body so it was facing her’s as I took her head in both my hands and pulled her closer. Her arms wrapped around me while I grasped on to her back, practically cradling her as I felt her fall backwards. But I held her closer, kissing her like this would be the only chance I got. If James knew anything about this, it would be.
Wait! What was I doing? I had to have some sort of self-restraint. I was getting lost in the heat of the moment! Without a second’s hesitation, I pulled myself away from her. She stared up at me, her cheeks completely flushed – at least it looked that way in the weak light. Both our chests were rising and falling fast.
“I just... I needed to know...” I began, not sure where I was going with this sentence.
“Needed to know what?” I shook my head and Cam looked more lost than ever. I looked back down at her and gave her a heart melting smile.
“Camille. You’re beautiful. You know that right?” I wasn’t sure why I had to tell her this. It didn’t justify my actions by any means.
“Um. Thank you?” I leaned down and kissed her forehead before getting off the couch. Nothing else was going to happen tonight.
“I have work in the morning. And you should get to bed. I’ll see you later alright?” I grabbed my keys and started for the stairs.
“Wait. What?” She spoke sharply, jumping to her feet. I had to get out of here and sort out what just happened.
So I smiled and said, “Good night, Cam,” before bolting it down the stairs and out the door. I shouldn’t have kissed her. I wanted to kiss her. And I’m pretty sure she wanted to kiss me too. But I should have waited. There should have been a talk about feelings or something. But no. I snogged her.
Ace skills right there.
