Roxy's Heart (part 3/?)
Roxy hadn't slept since the day before, her thoughts wouldn't allow her a moments peace. Whether it be the assassin, or Daviin's crimes, which he had told her about. His mother owned a shop up until she died a couple years ago, and she owed some money to her 'security', so Daviin did what he had to, to help his mother. Roxy trusted this man, for some reason, she felt that she didn't need her guard up around him, not all the way at least, she was still weary, but years of mental, physical, and emotional abuse made her that way.
Now the assassin, she felt bad for leaving him there, she knew he would be robbed, possibly killed. She couldn't help but feel guilty, and even after he'd tried to kill her, twice, she still felt curious about the man. What brought him to such a life? Shaking her head in attempt to scatter the thoughts, she stared at the ceiling. She didn't know what it was but, but for some reason Roxy felt...off.
Knowing sleep would never come, Roxy stood and made herself a quick breakfast of cut up fruits with powdered sugar. After eating, she left to get a Caf, maybe Daviin would meet up with her.
She was halfway through the door when her comm link beeped, "Roxy here." She answered, "Hey, you tried calling last night, or earlier this morning?" Rex said, sounding groggy, "Yeah, uh, I was just lonely, but I also wanted to tell you that I broke up a brawl in a bar!" She lied, partly. "That's my girl, did you kick his ass?" "I punched her once and she was out. Sometimes I forget that we're stronger than the average person." She laughed, "Hah, yeah, so have you met anyone else?" He asked, "Uh, yeah, a travelling marketsman, Daviin. He's pretty nice." She replied.
"Alright, well I have to get to my duties, I'll call you later, yeah?" "Yeah, I miss you." "Miss you too, vod'ika."
She sighed, and began her walk to the market stalls to get some Caf with Daviin, she kept her eyes open for the assassin, she had become a bit paranoid knowing he was around, and the fact that she has left him in the streets this time probably didn't seem very nice, at least the first time she knocked him unconscious she rented him a motel room, for all she knew he could be robbed or dead, maybe.
Roxy reached the fruit stand that Daviin owned, and she smiled when she saw him. She walked up and greeted him, "Morning Roxy!" he greeted back enthusiastically. "You wanna go get some Caf?" She asked, he seemed to be contemplating for a moment, "Sure! I know a great place." he said, putting a 'closed' sign on his stall and locking his safe box.
"So, did you get any sleep last night?" asked Daviin, "Uh, not really no. That's why I need the Caf." She explained. "Ah, can I ask what kept you awake?"
"Honestly, it was mostly because of what that assassin said, and I couldn't help but feel bad that we left him laying there." She confessed, "He deserved it! Either one of us could have been killed if we had taken him somewhere." said Daviin. Roxy nodded, still feeling bad.
Realizing there were less people, Roxy looked around to see they were in a bad part of town, "Where are we?" She asked, "Shit, I must have taken a wrong turn, hold on." He said taking out his mini data-pad. As Daviin was looking at directions, Roxy heard a sound, it was shouting and cheering, then electric type sounds, and screaming. Her heart racing, she quickly glanced around, and started moving towards the sounds, trusting her ears and instincts.
Daviin looked up and saw Roxy walking away from him. 'What the-"
"Daviin, do you hear that?" She asked, "Yeah, it's probably some gang, we don't wanna be over here, trust me." he explained, "No, I hear someone screaming, in pain. I have to help." She shook her head and took off running down an alley way, and turned until she knew she was close to the source of the pained screams.
Daviin followed close behind her, and stopped when he saw a crummy looking bar. "Roxy, I know this place, we gotta leave. It's bad news in there." He warned, Roxy peeked inside and saw a bunch of bounty hunters and some gangsters gathered around a figure that was suspended by it's wrists and ankles, and neck, the person was being electrocuted. When Roxy looked closer, she realized it was the assassin.
"Look!" She whisper shouted, "It's the assassin..."
"Good, he's getting what he deserves! Now let's get out of here." Daviin grabbed her arm, but she didn't budge. "I can't leave him there. I can't. I know he tried to kill us but...it would go against everything I stand for to let those scum kill him that way." Roxy said, standing straighter than usual and puffing her chest out a bit. Daviin looked back in, seeing at least thirty people in there. "I'm not gonna get myself killed for that jackass, no way." He denied. Roxy frowned, and turned back and looked at the assassin as soon as a shock went through him and he screamed in pain, she could see he had been beaten up, and stripped of most of his clothing.
She knew what it felt like to be abused like this, and she wasn't going to walk away from him.
"You can stay or go, I won't judge you either way. But I'm going in there." said Roxy, a look of determination in her deep brown eyes. "I'm sorry Roxy, but I won't risk my life for him, I have to get back to my shop. I'll see you later." he said, and walked away with shoulders slumped. Taking a deep breath, Roxy took out her blasters, and taking careful aim, shot the lights out, plunging the room into darkness.
"Hey! What's going on!?" A voice shouted, and then blaster sounds came through. Roxy shot down whoever she could see from where she was standing, safely outside the building, a man saw her and tried to grab her, she punched him and broke his arm. Slowly, she made her way under cover, towards where the assassin hung, now unconscious from the pain.
The backup lights came on, and now the other twenty people in the bar could see her, and began firing. "Get her!" Screamed a random thug. She dodged bullets left and right, she comm link began beeping, but she ignored it. She shot down three more thugs, and ducked for cover behind the bar, shooting a few more, she grabbed a gangster and used him as a meat shield, and now there were only five left, holstering her pistols, she threw a tear bomb, and they began coughing.
She got behind one and broke her neck, another she knocked unconscious with a chair, the other two, she smashed their heads together. The last one started running away, Roxy grabbed a pistol and shot him in the leg, he kept running. She didn't have time for that.
She turned and saw the electrocuter was on a timer, and it went off again, and the assassin screamed in pain, but fell back unconscious, his head lolling forward. She quickly shot the cuffs around his wrists and ankles, and caught him before he collided with the sandy ground. "Alright, you're fine, I'm gonna get you out of here." Roxy whispered to the unconscious man.
Roxy hoisted him up, and dragged him out the back, taking back ways to her ship, she started to hear a buzzing, but ignored it. She managed to get him to her ship without seeing another living soul. She opened the back of the ship, and got him into a seat, locking her ship door, she now tended to the man.
Taking precautions, she tied his hands behind his back on the chair he was sat in. She grabbed a bottle of water, and a some fruits, and tried waking him. Patting his face lightly, she whispered, "Hey, wake up." Slowly, he came to. His eyes adjusted, and he saw a woman figure standing in front of him, once his eyesight was completely back, he knew who it was.
"What the hell.." He trailed off, looking around, feeling his hands tied, "Let me go!" He yelled, "Hey, relax man." She she spoke softly, "Where am I, and Why am I here?" He asked quickly, Roxy sensed he was scared, and she sat across from him.
"I saved you from those thugs." She said, "Why?"
"...because, despite what you think, I do have a sense of justice, and when I saw you hanging there, I wasn't just going to walk by and pretend nothing was wrong with that." She said with a sternness in her voice, his tired blue eyes seemed to soften, and he looked anywhere but at her as he thought through his next words. "So, what are you gonna do? Take me to your rebel base and let them kill me?"
"Kriff no! I'm going to let you go..." replied Roxy, he looked at her, his eyes confused. "But," She started, "You have to answer some questions first."
"Fine."
"How did you know where I was?"
"I put a tracking device on your back, between your shoulder blades, when we were fighting."
"You son of a-..." She trailed off as she lifted her shirt and reached for the device, she finally got it, and smashed it in her hands. She looked at him again, his eyes locked with hers.
"Why are you doing this? Not just trying to kill me, or take me in whatever, why are you working with the empire?" She asked, he looked at his feet. Roxy knew he wouldn't answer this question. "How long have you been doing this?"
"Since I was twenty-two, it was the only job I could get after I was kicked out of the academy." He said, seeming nervous speaking now.
"So, I assume after you let me go, you expect me to stop trying to kill you?" Asked the assassin. "No, because I understand, you have an over-bearing boss, a job to do, if you don't you're in trouble. I'll let you go, no strings attached. But I want you to remember, I saved you. I risked my life, to save the assassin that tried to kill me..twice! I'm not a bad person, I'm not scum, I may not be normal or right in the head, but I'm anything but a deserter or a traitor, so check your facts again before you go trying to kill me, think about what I told you, and how I showed you mercy when others wouldn't."
"Anyone else walking past that bar would have left you to die, knowing who you were or not, but I didn't." She finished her speech, her deep eyes never leaving his light ones. "But, mister assassin man, you are free to go." She said, getting up to untie him. "Rivvens. My last name is Rivvens, call me that rather than 'assassin man'." He said as he moved his hands for her to reach. Her cool fingers brushed against his warm wrists, she hissed as she stood back straight.
A bullet had grazed her in the middle of that blaster fight, and she hadn't realized. He watched as she lifted her shirt past her hip and saw the wound, just a graze.
"Huh, I'll bandage that later." mumbled Roxy, looking away quickly, Rivvens stood and turned toward the door. "I guess I'll be seeing you around." He said, "I don't know about that, I might not be here next time you try to kill me." Roxy smirked.
He turned to look at her, his heart lurching, if he didn't kill her soon, the emperor would have him executed. He sighed, and nodded, "Guess I'll just have to find you again the, huh?" A smirked graced his features. Roxy tossed him a bottle of water, "Guess you will, Rivvens." she jokingly used his last name.
He was about to turn and leave when he heard a sound, speeder-bikes. Roxy looked out using her binoculars, "Shit!" She yelled, "Okay, so while I was saving you, one thug may or may not have gotten away. Guess he informed his boss..." She trailed off.
"Are you kidding me!?" shouted Rivvens. "Alright, you can either get in the ship with me, and fly far enough away that they give up, or take your chanced with them!" Shouted Roxy as she went to fire up the engines, she heard the door shut and assumed he left. When she turned, he was sitting in the co-pilots seat, ready to get away from those thugs.
"Here we go, hope you can still take off like you used to baby..." She muttered as she quickly took off after doing a spin to create dust.
"You sure we can get away from this in this old pile of rust?" asked Rivvens, "Hell, if I can still fight, she can still fly!" She shouted as she went straight up into the dust cloud she had made. She flicked the thrusters on and got as far away from that city as possibly.
Once they reached a city that was about two days travel away by bike, she landed. "This is the main city of Tatooine, you know that right? There are Hutts here, more bounty hunters, more people here who are more than willing to kill you for less then me." said Rivvens, "Scared of a little competition?" Roxy smirked and shut off the engines, and sent a comm message to Daviin telling her that she had to make a quick escape and was at the main Hutt city.
"Alright, I know you're probably ready to kill me, but after saving your life, you gotta at least give me a day or two head start, deal?" She asked, her hand extended to him, "Deal." He replied with a curt nod and shook her hand with a firm grip.
"See you in a few days then, guess I'll have to kick your ass again and waste more money putting you in a motel.." She mocked, he smirked, then processed her words, and frowned, "Wait, why didn't you leave me there that day? Why did you rent me a room?" He asked, "Like I said, I do have a sense of justice, and I'm not a piece of shit, I wasn't going to leave you to be robbed or killed or something. I like to think I'm a good person." Roxy said, placing a hand on his shoulder, both now realizing that he was still only in ragged trousers.
"Oh, hold on, I have some over-sized clothes from my brothers in here somewhere.." She trailed off and went to the trunk. She grabbed a pair of pants and a button up shirt. "Here, there's some shoes here too." she explained as she handed him the clothes, she pointed him to the bathroom so he could change.
Rivvens couldn't wrap his head around this, he was told she was scum, a deserter, a traitor, a murderer. That she could never be trusted. He was going to take her advice and dig deeper into her name, though he knew he would still have to kill her.
"Thanks, for the clothes and for saving me."
"No problem, but now, you better get out of here. I guess I'll see you on the streets or in the alleyways." Roxy smirked and opened the door for him. He nodded and began walking away, he looked over his shoulder and Roxy was still watching him.
She didn't hate this man, she felt sorry for him, she knew he hated his job, only a twisted soul enjoys this shit work. She could see it in his eyes that he was scared of what would happen if he didn't take her in, but Roxy wouldn't go down without a fight, perhaps she could get him to leave this line of work. No, that was ridiculous. At least she could tell he didn't feel that hatred and disgust towards her anymore, he knew she was at least a half-assed good person.
Remembering the wound on her side, Roxy closed the door to the ship and discarded her shirt, she put some rubbing alcohol on it and bandaged it up and put on a clean shirt. The suns were now setting and Roxy was actually tired. She checked her mini data-pad and saw a message from Daviin, he would be there in three days, and perhaps they would leave together and travel for a while. Roxy felt that maybe she didn't want to now, like she needed to stay, maybe try and help Rivvens to get out of that toxic job.
She knew she couldn't do that though. Laying on her bed, she closed her eyes, and fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Finally, a good nights sleep.
No dreams, nothing, just a sound sleep.
Though this was the last time Roxy would sleep this well, for a while at least.
