The Sunset
This is an alternate ending of the Last Jedi, where Luke prevents Rey from leaving after she and Ben touch hands in the hut.
Rey sat with her eyes closed and her legs crossed. Her breathing was calm and steady as she meditated.
She sat on a large rock on the edge of a cliff that overlooked the sea.
She was on Ahch-To, it had been a long day of training...mostly her attempting to train herself. Luke had been avoiding her since their fight last night... she had been avoiding him too. Didn't he understand that she didn't want to turn to the Dark Side? She just wanted to bring Ben back to the light. She wanted to do the same thing for Ben that Luke had done for his father.
There was still good in Ben...she'd seen it. Luke had gone to Vader with only the faintest glimmer of light, but she had seen far more than small glimmer in Ben. She'd seen a burning flame concealed by a thin veil of darkness. He only needed someone to help him, someone to show that they cared...that he was worth saving.
As she mediated, her mind wondered. Could convince Chewbacca to disobey Luke's orders not to let her leave? Would the Wookiee understand why she wanted to save the man who had killed his best friend? Deep down she knew that while Chewbacca was angry with Ben, and rightfully so, he still loved him.
Rey sighed deeply. She had to bring Ben home...for Leia. For Luke, even though he didn't realize it, brining Ben back was the only way he would be truly free of the guilt he felt. And for Han...he had died trying to save his son and she realized now that Han wouldn't want vengeance, he would want her to finish what he had started...bring Ben home.
But most of all for Ben...he was Snoke's prisoner, Kylo Ren's prisoner and he didn't even realize it.
She tried to calm herself as she felt the ground begin to shake around her.
Suddenly she felt a gentle touch on her arm and she instantly calmed. Suddenly everything was still and quiet, she knew who was behind her.
"I missed you," Ben confessed. "I was worried about you."
"Why?" she whispered, keeping her eyes closed and trying to hide how happy she was to see him.
"My uncle saw us together...he probably thought that you were turning to the Dark Side. You know what he did when he saw darkness in me. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"No I'm fine," she answered. "He just doesn't want me to leave."
"Tell me where you are...I'll come to get you."
"Ben..." she began and she felt a mixture of emotions rise within him. Sadness, anger...but also joy and something else, something she didn't understand. "...you know I can't."
"You're trying to protect him?" he sounded a little upset.
"He feels guilty Ben, he isn't hiding from you or the First Order, he's hiding because he's ashamed."
Ben didn't reply, but she could sense his surprise and his disbelief. She found that keeping her eyes closed she could feel his emotions more.
"I won't hurt him, I just want you...just you," he said gently.
Rey held her breath trying to suppress her urge to inhale in surprise at his words.
She could hear him swallowing hard and gathering his courage as he continued. "I want to be with you, I don't want you to feel alone anymore." She felt him gently take her hand in his.
She took a deep breath as his words sunk in, then she squeezed his hand gently. "Then come back, come back home."
"I can't. I can't face my mother after what I've done. Join me...please."
"Can I think about it?" she asked, calmly keeping her eyes closed.
"Of course," he replied.
"And you'll think about coming home too?" she asked.
"I...yes, I will," he answered slowly.
"What should we do now?" Ben asked after several moments of silence.
"Nothing...just relax," she replied.
"Relax? Then why do you have your eyes closed you're missing the beautiful sunset."
She opened her eyes to see the twin suns sinking slowly below the horizon. It was beautiful. "You can see it?"
"Yes...probably because I can't see you right now." He was sitting behind her, and couldn't see any part of her except the back of her head.
"You're right, it is beautiful."
Ben smiled ever so slightly, then he wrapped his arms around her waist and gently pulled her closer to him. He was surprised when she made no objection...he had thought that he would have to plead with her to let him hold her for just a moment, but she leaned her head against his chest seeming to relax as she watched the sunset with him.
