I Am A Scoundrel Like My Father Before Me
"I have to go," Han said, placing a soft kiss on Leia's lips.
Their thirteen year old son, Ben ran to his father. "Wait! Dad, please take me with you."
"Hmmm," said Han.
"Please," the boy begged.
Han looked at his wife. "I think he's old enough."
"I don't know Han, it might be too dangerous. What if he gets hurt?"
"Don't worry sweetheart, I'll take good care of the kid. Besides who can hurt him while he has a Wookiee next to him." Han pointed a thumb at Chewbacca.
Leia looked between her husband and her son, both with the same begging looks on their faces. "Fine," she gave in. She looked into her sons dark eyes, gently straightening his messy black locks. "Be careful."
"I will mom," he promised.
"I love you."
"I know," he answered, then he followed his father onto the Millennium Falcon.
Leia shook her head, he was just like his father.
"Can I copilot the Falcon, dad?"
Han thought for a moment, then nodded. "You have to learn sometime," he answered. "Just don't tell your mother."
"I won't."
Han sat down in the pilot seat and Ben sat next to him.
Ben looked at all of the various buttons and switches, he was confused, but he didn't show it. "This will be easy."
"Not as easy as I make it look, kid," Han answered. He pointed to a series of buttons and switches, explaining what they did.
Ben nodded, listening intently. Then he did as his father instructed, and soon they had the Millennium Falcon in the air. Once they had left the planet's surface, Han prepared to jump into hyperspace.
"Punch it!" he exclaimed, then he and his son pushed the Falcon into hyperdrive.
Chewbacca growled approvingly, and scrubbed the boy's hair. Ben smiled at the Wookiee's praise, Chewbacca had always been like an uncle to him and he had always looked up to him.
"So dad, where are we going?"
"To Tatooine, unfortunately." Han replied. "I have some unfinished business with the Hutts."
Soon, they arrived at Tatooine. Ben stepped aside to let Chewbacca land copilot the landing. "Landing was a lot harder than taking off," his father had told him, "after all you can't crash into the sky."
Soon, the Millennium Falcon landed on the hot dry ground. Ben looked around at the planet as the ship door opened. So, this was the planet that his uncle and grandfather had came from. How did they survive here, with all of this sand? he wondered silently.
Han handed one of his blasters to his son, "I think it's time you had one of these."
"Thank you!" he exclaimed, excitedly.
Han pointed a finger at him. "Don't tell your mother."
"I won't."
Han lead Chewbacca and Ben through a village.
"The first rule of smuggling: never trust anyone," said Han.
"What about you, dad?"
"The way I see it, rules are made to be broken, if you aren't willing trust anyone, you'll spend your life alone. Trusting the wrong people could get you killed, but if trust the right people, it could save your life. So you can trust me and Chewie, but no one else. In fact don't even speak to anyone, these are not the type of people you want to become friends with."
Ben nodded, he was glad that it was okay for him to trust his father.
They came to Jabba's old palace, which was now owned by his son, Rotta.
"This is a nasty place, don't speak to anyone, don't even look at anyone, just keep your eyes down and let me do the talking."
Ben nodded, he kept his eyes on the floor.
Han approached Rotta. "I've come to pick up the cargo, just as we agreed," he said.
"Just in time I was beginning to think that you weren't coming." Rotta replied.
"I couldn't resist your offer."
Rotta nodded, then he turned to look at Ben, his eyes darkened. "Is this your son?"
Han nodded.
"He bears a great resemblance to the princess that killed my father," said Rotta.
"Well..." Han began trying to come up with a convincing lie.
"Silence! Put that boy in the dungeon! He will pay for what his mother did to my father."
A group of guards came over and grabbed Ben.
"Rotta, surely we can work something out. It wasn't the boy's fault, take me instead," Han pleaded.
"No!"
Ben looked up at Rotta for the first time, as he did he sensed something from his past. "Wait, you owe my family," said Ben.
"What?"
"My grandfather saved your life when you were just a huttlet."
There was a distant memory of Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi who had saved him when he was a baby. "Anakin Skywalker was your grandfather?"
Ben nodded sincerely.
"Hmmm, I will let you go to repay my debt to your grandfather," he said.
"Thank you, mighty Rotta." He turned to look at his father who was clearly surprised. "Let's go."
Han nodded and followed him out of the palace to the cargo that they were supposed to carry.
"Nice work kid, you talked yourself out of that one. You're stealing my moves."
"Well, I learned from the best," he answered. "Besides I am a Scoundrel, just like my father before me."
