Lothal Part One

Please enjoy the next chapter.

NPOV

Kanan sighed as he settled into his seat. Glancing out the window, he could see the planet Garel growing smaller.

'At least we will have a better life,' he thought to himself looking down at his son, curled securely against his chest.

Looking out the window once more he watched the stars blur as the ship jumped into hyperspace. After a few hours Kanan was jerked awake when Ezra began to whimper.

"Sh...it's okay, Daddy's here," he whispered patting the boy's back. "Please don't cry."

However the boy had no intentions of staying quiet for much longer.

"Ezra please," Kanan begged glancing up.

Noticing a tall woman in an imperial uniform glaring at them, Kanan quickly ducked his head holding Ezra tighter.

"Shh...I know you're scared, but it's gonna be okay, I promise."

Ezra kept whimpering and Kanan knew it was a matter of time before the young child would begin to cry, loudly.

"You know," Kanan started hoping it would help soothe the boy.  "I'm pretty sure you aren't going to remember this but the truth is...sigh...Buddy I'm scared to."

Kanan felt tears welling up but continued.

"I have no idea what to do except for what Janus told me to do. Yet I don't know how to be an adult on my own and especially with you. Ezra baby please don't cry because if you do I might start to and that's not going to help anyone."

As if the infant understood, Ezra quieted down and started to suck on his fist.

"Figures, I tell you my deepest fear and you were fussing because you're hungry," the teen joked looking into his bag.

Grabbing a pacifier Kanan worked Ezra's fist out of mouth and stuck the pacifier in before Ezra could protest.

"There, that should help," he said sitting up a little bit straighter.

The baby grinned around it and laid his head on Kanan's shoulder.

"Are you always gonna be difficult?" Kanan asked adjusting so they would be comfortable.

Ezra made a soft giggle sound.

"I'll take that as a yes."

"Attention passengers, we will be arriving to the planet Lothal in a few minutes. Please secure all belongings and as always thank you for traveling with Imperial Shipping Services."

Kanan POV

I rolled my eyes listening to the droid. If they were gonna be apart of everything, why doesn't the Imperials come up with a better name? Ezra reached up hitting his pacifier against my face.

"Ahh, EJ," I whispered wiping my cheek. "You know I hate it when you do that."

Why this kid loves to put things in his mouth and then on me, I will never know.

A few minutes later the ship landed and we exited.

"Well Ezra, this is our new home. Let's go see where we can get a room."

Suddenly a shadow towered over us, causing me to hold my son tighter.

"Echmm..."

Turning around I saw the same Imperial woman from before.

"Um...hello," I said trying to be polite.

"Might I ask where your parents are?"

Her voice was cold and calculated, reminding me of an assassin droid.

"I...uh..."

Ezra chose that moment to finally break his calm manner and start crying, unfortunately drawing the woman's attention.

"Quiet him," she ordered.

Sticking the pacifier that had been in my hand, back in his mouth, he quieted slightly but it did  give me time to think of a good lie.

"They're dead. We're traveling to stay with an uncle."

The woman's glare increased making Ezra whimper even more.

"Then where are your papers?"

Papers? What is she talking about?

"All citizens living on and traveling to Lothal must have strict documents," she explained.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know," I stammered.

Oh why can't Janus be here. He would know what to...

'Stop it Jarrus!' I yelled to myself. 'Janus is gone. You're the adult here, act like it.'

"Look, it's just us and to be honest it's been a rough couple of weeks. I didn't know about those... whatever they are and once we're settled I'll make sure we have what we need," I told her hoping that I sounded authoritative.

It's hard when your voice still cracks slightly.

"Do you know who I am?"

I studied her a moment not really sure. Tall, short black hair and piercing, cold blue eyes.

"I'm afraid not," I said as alarm bells started going off in my head.

"I am Governor Pryce and I am placing you in Imperial custody. The last thing we need is a low life child and his brat."

I opened my mouth only to snap it close. The governor smirked before motioning for a few troopers. I took a step back getting ready to run when a voice called out.

"Ah Caleb there you are!"

Looking toward the voice I saw an older man smiling big and waving. Walking over to him, he put his arm around me in a hug mindful of the baby I was carrying.

"Play along," he whispered.

"Dead parents, living with an uncle," I responded, realizing what he was doing.

The man nodded sadly, pulling away from me.

"I am so sorry Caleb. I can't believe their gone but don't worry you and the little one can stay as long as you want. However your Aunt Marsha was so very excited to hear that you had a son; she has everything made up for you both."

I nodded and glanced back as the Gov. Pryce came up.

"You are this boy's uncle?"

"That's right," the man said. "Is there a problem?"

"Yes, he does not have traveling papers."

"Oh dear," the man gasped. "I totally forgot to tell the poor boy. He's been through so much, I just wanted to get him here and settled. I will take any responsibilities. The death of his parents was so tragic that young Caleb needed to go somewhere where he and the boy would be safe."

I watched as Pryce's face went from smirking to annoying in a matter of seconds.

"Very well, make sure he gets his papers and don't let me see him again."

With that she stalked off.

"Thank you," I sighed. "You saved our lives."

"No worries my young friend. Morad Sumar, at your service," the man said holding out his hand.

"Kanan Jarrus and this little bundle is Ezra," I introduced taking his hand.

Ezra looked at him smiling around his pacifier.

"He's quite the cute one," Mr. Sumar said.

"Yeah until he gets fussy, then he's not so cute."

That made him laugh.

"Don't worry, all babies are like that. Trust me, you are not alone."

Kanan chuckled still holding his baby close to his chest.

"I guess I still have a lot to learn."

Mr. Sumar patted the young man on the shoulder.

"Now tell me what really brought you to our humble planet?"

"A better life," Kanan answered. "Before my friend died he told me to come to Lothal. He said to go to Shadow Haunt and talk to Joe, said that he would be able to help us."

Morad nodded before grinning.

"Then you stay with me for the evening."

"But I...I mean..."

"No no," the man said waving his hand. "I insist. Besides Shadow Haunt is closed for the day. Now you and Little Ezra can bunk with me tonight and tomorrow I can take you to see Joe."

Kanan sighed and nodded his agreement.

"Good, now let's go."

Following the man out of the port, Kanan sighed.

'This day gets better and better.'

I do hope you enjoyed and please let me know what you thought. Have a wonderful day!
