Just a Cold Part Three
Hello everyone! I do hope you enjoy this chapter.
Kanan POV
I sighed watching the doors close with my son on the other side. Turning back to the waiting room, I took note of the different people. Mostly humans sat waiting for help but their was a few twi'lecks, rodians, and several other species. Sitting down, I didn't notice how some of them gave me strange looks. I didn't even notice when Hera sat down by my side.
"Kanan," she hissed.
I jumped before turning to look at her.
"Hera? Where's the others?"
"On the ship, worried. Have you heard anything? What's going on?"
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly running and hand over my hair.
"They just took him back. He's scared and I can't be there. I'm driving myself crazy thinking that something is going to happen."
Hera put a hand on my shoulder giving me a comforting squeeze.
"You were so calm and collected earlier."
"Yeah but I was trying to be brave for Ezra. Now, he's there and Im not, so yeah, I'm a bundle of nerves."
She smiled and took my hand.
"Don't worry Hun, Ezra's a strong boy. He'll be alright."
I sighed and sat back slipping into a light meditation.
A little while later I was jarred out my thoughts. I glanced to the side to see Hera staring at me slightly worried.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"I need to go check on the ship, please let me know if the doctor comes out while I'm gone."
I nodded and she walked outside. Rubbing my eyes I looked around to see that most of the room had cleared out except for an older gentle man across from me and a small family on the far end of the room.
"You seem perfectly fine, to be in a place like this."
I jumped when the old man started talking.
"Excuse me"
"Sorry," he chuckled. "I just can't imagine that someone that seems like he is perfectly healthy would be waiting in an emergency room."
I eyed the man for a moment not sure what to think of him.
"No worries friend," he said holding up a hand. "Just trying to make small talk. You look a little bit lonely."
"Sorry, I guess I'm just a bit worried," I apologized rubbing the back of my neck.
He chuckled at that.
"I understand. I had to bring my granddaughter in for a broken leg. Poor thing is awful scarred. They had to do a quick surgery to repair it, made me wait out here. So, what brings you here?"
"My son had to have emergency surgery," I said sitting back.
"How old is he?"
"Nine."
"Poor kid," his face softened. "Let me guess, appendicitis?"
I nodded my head taking a deep breath.
"He was terrified when they wouldn't let me back, now I'm having to wait."
The old man smiled in understanding. We talked for a few minutes longer when Hera came back looking slightly annoyed.
"What's wrong?" I asked waving as the old man got up to speak with the doctor.
"Zeb and Chopper," she muttered rolling her eyes.
"Enough said."

As Hera went to sit down Kanan's head shot up and toward the operating room doors.
"Kanan?" she questioned shakily.
"Ezra?" Kanan croaked.
Something was wrong, he could feel it. The bond that linked the two was suddenly flickering and it went quiet for a few seconds before coming back dimly.
"Kanan? Kanan, what is it?"
"Ezra something is wrong with Ezra," the man said standing.
Hera POV
"Ezra? What do you mean?"
Kanan's face twitched before he sat down.
"Kanan?"
He didn't hear me.
"Come on Baby Boy, where are you?" he whispered quietly closing his eyes.
Sitting down beside him I waited for what was about to come. After what felt like hours, Kanan came back to reality and shot to his feet. I turned to see a doctor come out with a grim look on his face. I tried to tell myself that it wasn't Ezra's but from the look on Kanan's face, I knew that it was.
"I'm doctor Chow, I'm assuming you two are here for the young boy with the appendicitis?" He asked.
"Yes, how is he?" Kanan asked.
The doctor's face softened slightly but I could tell he still had bad news. I quickly got up and went to my husband's side.
"Doc?"
"There were compilcations..."
Kanan POV
"Complications," Drl Chow answered.
I suddenly felt the blood leave my face.
"What happened? Where is he? What's wrong with my son?"
I barely felt Hera squeeze my hand. The doctor stared at us trying to guage how we would take whatever bad news he had.
"We should talk in private," he stated motioning us to follow.
Quickly we walked pass the main doors and along a few hallways. Once we reached a door in the pediatric wing, the man stopped.
"Normally I would talk to the parents in my office about problems but I think you should see for yourselves."
He opened the door to reveal Ezra on a ventilator and several objects floating above his head.
"Fulcrum said that you were bringing in a special kid but I didn't know that he was force sensitive," Dr. Chow remarked shutting door behind us. "Normally I'm supposed to report stuff like this but you know, the Empire isn't good with kids."
I turned to face him feeling very numb.
"I should be grateful for you not reporting him but I need to know what happened?"
Yeah, not reporting us is a good thing but I just want to know why my child isn't able to breathe properly.
"Like I said before there were complications," he said rubbing the back of his neck. "He reacted severely to the medication we gave him and as a result, young Ezra coded on us, twice. The second time he almost didn't come back. Right now he is in a coma. It's like he just doesn't want to wake up. I'm very sorry."
Turning back around I walked over and took Ezra's hand.
"Baby Boy, please come back to me," I whispered.
The objects lowered slightly. Glancing at the others, they seemed to understand and left the room. Diving into the force, I latched onto the weak bond. I tapped on his shields and was quickly allowed in. Taking a look around I could see that I was in the old apartment and it didn't look like things had changed.
"Ezra," I called softly.
A soft whimper was my answer. I walked over to the bedroom door and knocked.
"Ezra? Son, it's just me, are you in there?"
"He's gone."
"EJ?"
"No, he can't, he promised."
Opening the door, I was shocked to see a young teen curled against the bed sobbing into his knees.
"He promised, he promised!"
"Hey," I said catching his attention.
The kid jumped, his head jerking up.
I gasped when I saw his face. Though it was puffy and red from crying, I was staring into the teenage face of my son.
"Ezra?"
The kid whimpered backing as far as he could against the bed.
"No this can't be, he's...you're dead. You died!"
"Hey, easy," I soothed taking a step forward.
"NO!" He cried. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry I didn't save you, I tried, but there was too much happening. I was trying.... please, I'm sorry!"
Before I knew it he was sobbing all over again begging for forgiveness.
"Hey, hey," I ordered grabbing his face. "Easy, it's okay. Ezra none of this is real."
That got his attention.
"Wh..what?"
"EJ, you're in the hospital. You had a violent reaction to medication given to you for a surgery. Son, it's okay but I need you to wake up. Please, can you do that for me?"
The kid sniffled before his face slowly morphed back into his nine year old self.
"Daddy?"
"I'm here," I whispered wiping a stray tear away.
"You were gone. The bond snapped, it hurt so much."
He leapt into my arms holding on for dear life.
"It hurt so much, Daddy. Please don't go."
"I'm here," I soothed rubbing his back. "We'll talk when you wake up."
I felt him nod and everything went black.

Kanan blinked his eyes open, grunting against brightness.
"Kanan?"
Turning to the voice he smiled seeing Hera.
"Hey," he whispered.
"Is he okay?" She asked nervously.
Kanan nodded running a hand through his hair.
"How long have I been out?"
"Twenty minutes, after the first ten the doctor came in and checked Ezra's vitals. He said Ezra should be waking up soon."
"Good," the man sighed in relief.
"Kanan, what happened?"
"Not sure exactly," he said glancing at the boy. "He could have had a bad dream and his brain tricked him into thinking it was real and refused to wake up or Ezra had a vision and was to terrified to wake up."
"Which one do you think it was?"
"The second one."
"Which one are you going to tell him?"
"The first one."
"Kanan..."
Kanan turned and raised an eyebrow at her.
"Fine, you win," she sighed in defeat.
Thirty minutes later the pair was greeted with groggy blue eyes.
"Hey," Hera whispered kneeling next to the bed.
"Mama?"
"I'm here Sweetie, how are you feeling?" She asked.
"Not sick anymore."
"That's good," Kanan chuckled.
"Papa?"
"It's okay, everything is going to be fine."
Ezra felt tears began to well up and he was crying before he could wipe them away.
"What happened to me? I was scared and you weren't...couldn't be there."
Kanan kissed his boy's head head and nuzzled his face gently.
"I know Son, I promise it was nothing more than a bad dream. The medication made you hallucinate. It wasn't real," he whispered.
Hera watched the scene tearfully, stroking her child's hair.
'Poor kid, he really has been through a lot. Heh, funny how a simple cold could cause all this trouble.'
Back on the Ghost a short time later, the rest of the crew waited impatiently for the three to arrive. Zeb and Chopper were playing HoloChess while Sabine bit her nail in worry. They all jumped when the Phantom hissed from docking.
"They're here!" Sabine yelped jumping to her feet.
Zeb and Chopper looked up waiting. Hera slid down first, motioning for them to be quiet. Kanan climbed down cradling a sleeping Ezra.
"How is he?" Zeb asked his ears drooping down.
"Doctor said there were a few complications but Ezra is going to make a full recovery. He'll be tender for a few weeks so no prank wars," Kanan said eyeing them. "Should give you guys time to plan some really good ones."
The warrior grinned and crossed his arms.
"Glad he's alright."
"Me too, but you said there were complications, what happened?" Sabine questioned.
She hadn't been around for long but she had come to love the younger boy like a little brother.
"Reaction to the medication, it made him hallucinate a bit," Hera explained. "Luckily for us, the doctor didn't turn him and Kanan in for being force sensitive."
"Good, Doctor is smart," Chopper beeped not wanting to be left out.
Kanan rolled his eyes and rearranged the boy so he could carry him better.
"I agree Chopper, now like I said he is going to make a full recovery but he is going to need some rest. If possible, can you guys keep the volume down, just for today?"
The three nodded and went off to do some chores happy to have the youngest member home. Kanan kissed Ezra's forehead and went to his room, with Hera close behind.
"I'm guessing he's sleeping with us?"
"Just for now, wanna make sure he's okay."
Hera nodded and kissed his cheek.
"Get some rest Love, you need it. I'm gonna go get the info from before to Fulcrum."
Kanan careful placed Ezra on the bed and covered him up.
"Sleep tight Kid," he said laying down next to him. "Daddy's gonna take a quick nap."
Ezra snuggled against his side in response. Kanan closed his eyes, happy that his son was healthy and safe once more.
I do hope enjoyed this chapter. Please let me know what you thought. Have an awesome day!!
