I Love You

I owe all of you a huge apology. I haven't been writing much because of work. When I come home I'm really exhausted and fall asleep almost immediately. I do hope ya'll enjoy this chapter.

Ezra POV

Oh boy! Oh boy! Dad and I are going to spend the day together and finally be free from all of these procedures and whatever it's called. Barely able to contain my excitement I ran toward the cockpit but stopped short as I heard arguing coming from the other side of the door.

"Please Hera," I could hear Dad beg.

"Kanan," she said frustrated. "I told you, Commander Sato needs us ready at any given moment. We can't just go off for a day unless it is approved."

"Hera, you don't understand," Dad started to say before he was cut off.

"Kanan I know how much you want to spend some time with him but the rebellion needs you too. Look Hun, I can try but be prepared for a no."

Backing away, I felt tears starting to build. I shook my head and ran back to my room. Once inside I dropped onto my bed and let them fall. What's wrong with me? I'm almost a teenager, I shouldn't be so upset. But then again, I haven't even had a full conversation with my dad in almost six months. I miss him so much.

"It's not fair," I whispered hugging my pillow tight. "He was mine first."

Kanan POV

I sighed for what felt like the hundredth time in an hour. I promised Ezra that I would spend the day with him away from the rebellion and Hera just ruined it. She kept going on and on about how the rebellion needs me. However my son is only twelve and needs me more than the rebellion. Getting up from my meditation chair I walked over to his room and knocked on the door. Not getting a response I open the door slightly and could hear crying.

"EJ? Son are you alright?" I asked stepping inside and allowed the door to shut.

His small body tensed up not wanting to face me.

"Ezra its just me; what's wrong?" I ask sitting down on his bed.

Ezra turned over and my heart broke to see his tear stained face.

"It's not fair. You were mine first," he whispered.

My heart dropped, I guess that means he heard the argument.

"Oh Ezra," I cooed scooping him up.

He buried his face in my chest and clutched my shirt in his hands not wanting to let go.

"I know Kid, I know," I whispered softly while laying  both of us down.

"I don't want to share you," he said his voice muffled through the fabric.

I couldn't help but chuckle. Of course he didn't; for the first seven years it was just me and him. We didn't have to worry about rules, schedules, and regulations. Now I have to worry about making sure pilots get where they are suppose to be, missions are secure enough, and keeping the fleet's location was safe; with all of that I haven't gotten to be the one thing that I love more than being a Jedi, a dad.

"Hey," I whispered in his ear. "Look at me."

He looked up at me causing my heart to break more.

"I know that things have been hectic lately and I haven't been able to spend time with you, but," I offered pushing him away so I could see his face clearly.

"I love you, you are the most important thing in my life. This rebellion has made me forget that. For past six months I've been putting more focus on this 'job' wanting to believe that you would be alright but I was wrong. I'm so sorry,  in fact I'll tell you what. If you want, we can leave; take off in the Phantom and disappear.

Ezra POV

"Take off in the Phantom and disappear..."

He really means that? What am I saying, of course he means that. However if we leave then that means that we would always be running. Running from the Empire, we never be able to sleep soundly. Never fully be able to relax and be worse then we are now.

"No," I said looking down in shame.

"No? What do you mean no?" Dad asked slightly shocked.

"I'm being selfish," I whispered not wanting to meet his eyes. "I wanted you all to myself but Mom is right. The rebellion needs you to, you can help them in ways rest of them can't. If never seeing you again means that we win this fight, then so be it."

I couldn't help the tears that followed. I want my father but I can't be selfish.

Kanan POV

Selfish? Where did he get that from?

"Ezra Son, you  are the least selfish person I know. You are still young so I understand that you want to keep me to yourself.  I will do anything if it means you will be happy," I said hugging him close again.

"But the rebellion..." he cried.

"Is not important, you are," I responded running my fingers through his hair.

He pulled away as my comm went off.

"Kanan we need you in the debriefing room," Hera ordered.

"Go, they need you," Ezra whispered rolling over to face the wall.

I grabbed my comm and what I said next shocked everyone.

"Sorry Hera but this Jedi has something more important to do. You can handle one day without us, back off."

I shut off the link before she could respond. Ezra stared at me with wide eyes but I wasn't done yet.

"Come on, we need to get on the Phantom before she comes storming in here."

"But.."

Nope he's not going there.

"I promised you a day together and that's exactly what I'm going to give you. Now come on," I said getting up.

He didn't move so I did the next best thing.

"Don't make me tell you again," I told him sternly while flinging him over my shoulder.

"Papa," Ezra squeaked.

"Don't Papa me young man," I chuckled heading for the ship.

We made it to the Phantom and got into space just as Hera called.

"CALEB DUME! What are you thinking? You can not just take off!" She screamed her accent breaking through.

"Of course I can," I said calmly.

Ezra was at my feet looking up curiously.

"Hera I love you but Ezra needs me right now. The rebellion can wait, see ya," I said cutting off communication.

"You know she's gonna kill you right?"

"Yeah," I said before ruffling his hair. "but it will be worth it. Now what do you say we head to Lothal and go find Joe?"

"Sure," he chirped. "Can I take a nap though, I'm really sleepy."

"Of course Little Light," I said.

He smiled and laid his head against my leg. I chuckled while picking him up and placed him in my lap.

"I love you," Ezra whispered drifting off.

"I love you too, never forget that."
