Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing well during this pandemic. Sorry I haven't updated for a long time. So please enjoy this chapter.
Kanan POV
"It's a simple mission, she says. A quick in and out she says. Trust the contact, well I have news for her. It wasn't a simple mission, in fact it was a huge trap," Kanan muttered eyeing his surroundings.
Flashback NPOV
The Ghost crew was supposed to be rescuing a defecting senator from an Imperial escort. Agent Kallus somehow got wind of the operation and had troopers ready to take them down. Once again he underestimated the rebel's abilities. The crew not only rescued the delegate but Sabine was also able to spray paint her favorite calling card and place several bombs. Unfortunately that was when their luck ran out. Kallus had called in reinforcements and they started attacking the Ghost. Knowing he didn't have to time to board, Kanan shoved everyone up the ramp and slammed it shut, or so he thought. His young padawan had stayed behind to help with troopers.
"Ezra," he half groaned, half growled.
The week before the kid was bedridden due to a nasty head cold. Ever since he had gotten well Ezra went out of his way to help the others, much to their annoyance. Hera and Kanan had talked to him but it only seemed to make the helping out worse.
"Hey you need me," the padawan quipped firing a few rounds from his slingshot.
Rolling his eyes, Kanan fired a few shots from his blaster.
"You were supposed to be on board to help protect the Ghost."
"But you needed help!"
Kanan wanted to argue more when he heard a loud series of beeps. Sabine's bombs! Holstering his gun he grabbed Ezra's arm and jumped as the transports exploded.
Present
Kanan POV
I snorted running a hand through the boy's hair.
"Kid, what have you gotten us into?"
His face scrunched up slightly letting out a soft whimper.
"Don't worry I'm here," I whispered before starting to check him for injuries.
A few minutes later my poking and prodding brought him back to consciousness.
"Ezra? Hey, can you hear me?"
He groaned as his eyes fluttered briefly.
Ezra POV
I groaned as I tried to sit up.
"Easy," a voice said from close by.
I tensed before a sharp pain flared in my side.
"Ow," I whimpered laying back down.
"Yeah, you took quite the beating."
I really hope that the voice belonged to Kanan because right now I can not tell.
"Kanan?"
"Yes Kiddo, it's me. I need you to lie still for a few more minutes."
Now I was confused. What had happened? Finally being able to pry my eyes open, I could see Kanan leaning over me running his hands over my throbbing side.
"Hey!" I yelped squirming away, or at least I tried to.
I couldn't help it. After years of being alone, waking up with someone near by wasn't exactly easy.
"Ow."
"It's okay," Kanan soothed pulling his hands away. "I'm just making sure your ribs are still intact. After the ships exploded, we got thrown. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to breathe before we slid to the bottom of this ravine."
I looked up and could only see dirt.
"Then how come I can't see the sky?"
Kanan chuckled.
"That's because we're in a small cave that I was able to pull us into to hide."
I closed my eyes and tried to relax. Kanan must have taken it as his cue to resume his poking.
"Ow," I hissed when he touched my wrists.
"Sorry," he apologized.
"Just hurry please.
After he finished Kanan sighed and sat down by my head.
"I'm not gonna lie Kiddo, you're pretty banged up."
I let out a groan of frustration. I knew what that meant; more bedrest.
"Hey don't look at it as a bad thing," Kanan chuckled running a hand through my hair. "You get out of chores for again. Although I'm partially convinced that's why you did it anyway."
"That's not the reason," I mumbled.
"Then explain it to me Ezra. Ever since you have gotten better you have been doing anything and everything to help the others. What's going on?"
I looked away not wanting to look him in the eyes. I've only been on the ship for a few months and couldn't stand the thought of going to back to being alone. No matter how hard I tried not to, I had broken the first rule of street life: don't get attached.
"Ezra..."
NPOV
Kanan felt his heart twinged seeing his Padawan's face fall.
"Ezra..." he soothed reaching out and turning the boy's head back toward him. "Whatever is you can tell me."
Ezra sighed and Kanan could have sworn he saw the briefest of a tear.
"You wouldn't understand," he mumbled once more.
"Try me."
Ezra took a deep breath and winced.
"Take your time, it's okay," the man said placing his hand on the inside of Ezra's elbow.
"I've been down a week and haven't been pulling my weight. Now i'm gonna be down again for who knows how long. I can survive going back to the streets but I...I..."
"Hey," Kanan interrupted. "You, Mister, are not going back to the streets. You hear me? I don't care how many times I have to tell you to get it through that thick skull of yours. You have a home with us, with me, okay?"
The boy sniffed wanting desperately to believe his words. Kanan felt Ezra's desperation through their tender bond. Deciding that it would be better to be on his level, Kanan stretched out and laid down beside him. Ezra whimpered looking at him.
"I promise, it's gonna be okay," Kanan smiled. "Because I can guarantee that Hera is going to find us and when we're back on the Ghost she is going to put us both on bed rest."
"How long do you think it will take for them to find us?"
"Probably never," a gruff voice answered.
Kanan rolled over and grinned seeing it was Zeb.
"Took you long enough," Kanan snarked.
"Karabast Kanan," Zeb said coming closer. "You alright?"
Kanan nodded before turning back to Ezra.
"Ready to go home," he stressed the last word.
Ezra grinned brightly feeling the gentle nudge over their bond.
"Yes."
I do hope you enjoyed this and as always please let me know what you have thought. Have an awesome day!
