Are we really the bad guys?
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. With everything going I decided to make this as fluffy as I could. Please enjoy!
Ezra POV
It was supposed to be a simple mission, attack a weapons factory on Lothal and get out. However it only turned out to be a trap. After being separated from Zeb and Sabine, Dad and I was pinned down by a squad of troopers. I hit what I could with my small pistol but was running low on ammo.
"Spector Three, need a little help," Dad growled ducking back down.
"I would give it but I'm low on ammunition," I said.
"Why didn't you reload it before we came!"
"I did, who do you think shot the troopers before we got pinned!"
"Gah, this is just perfect," he muttered grabbing his comm. "Specter Two, give me some good news."
"Not much to tell you Spector One, I thought you said was going to be a simple job," Mom snarked.
"It was, I guess the Empire is getting smarter. Any sign of Spectors Five and Six?"
"Yes, they're on the roof."
Wait how did they get on the roof? Shaking my head slightly I looked around for an escape when the force blared a warning. Looking over my shoulder I noticed a walker activate and turn its gun toward us.
"Less flirting, we need to move," I said taking off.
"Spector Thre..." he went to scold but heard the whine of the walker's gun and quickly took off after me.
After what seemed like forever, we were able to lose the troopers but was met with a locked door.
"It must be on lock down," I said going over to the panel.
"Forget it Son, if it's locked down, you aren't going to be able to hack it," Dad said grabbing his comm. "Spector Two?"
"I'm here, sorry I had to grab Five and Six and now dodging ties," Mom answered.
"Well don't worry about us, we've got another way out. I'll call when we're ready for a pick up," he said replacing the device.
I opened my mouth to ask what he had in mind when he pulled out his saber and stabbed the door. I chuckled as they sprung open instantly.
"Well if you want to do it the easy way..."
"Why wouldn't you want to do it the easy way? It's the easiest," Dad snarked replacing his saber.
I went to responded when a blaster bolt hit above my head.
"Time to go," Dad said grabbing my arm.
Together we made our way out of the facility only to be met with a raging storm. Glancing back we could see the approaching troopers before looking outside.
"Rather have you sick than captured," Dad muttered kneeling. "Hop on."
Deciding not to question it, I quickly jumped onto his back and held on as Dad ran into the storm.
Kanan POV
Having Ezra on my back slowed me down a bit but I meant what I said. I would much rather have him sick than captured.
"Dad," Ezra whimpered as a bolt of lightening stuck close by.
"Hang on Buddy," I said holding him tighter.
The storm was so bad that I couldn't see very far but I had to keep going. Suddenly the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. A combination of a lighting strike and a well placed shot near my feet, caused me to topple over spilling my cargo in the process. Ezra let out a strangled yelp as he hit the ground and rolled a few times.
"Ezra!" I yelled scrambling over to him. "EJ?"
"My arm, I think I broke my arm," Ezra whimpered.
Glancing over my shoulder I frowned at the troopers.
"Sorry Baby," I whispered turning back.
He didn't have time to reply as I scooped him up and took off running through the storm once more. After few minutes we were able to lose the troopers however we had a new problem. We were lost but at least the rain had stoped for the most part. Leaning against a wide tree I took a moment to catch my breath. Looking down my heart broke seeing the silent tears of pain running down Ezra's face.
"EJ," I cooed at him.
His blue eyes snapped open looking up at me.
"We're safe," I said sinking down to the ground.
I winced at his small cry. I cradled him close and gently took his arm in my hand. Ezra tried to jerk away but I held him tighter.
"Shh...it's okay, I'm just looking to see how bad it is," I whispered.
Ezra buried his face against me grabbing my shirt in his uninjured fist. Using two fingers I ran them down my boy's arm. Luckily I didn't feel any broken bones.
"It's okay, it's okay," I said readjusting my grip. "Nothing doesn't appear to be broken, you may have just landed wrong."
Grabbing my comm I radioed Hera.
"Oh thank goodness," she sighed. "Are you both alright?"
"Ezra's shaken and might need a quick once over," I shivering as a breeze came through.
"How about you?"
Before I had a chance to respond I heard troopers making their way through the forest.
"Hera we have to go, how far out are you?"
"Just reentering the planet..."
"Good keep tracking our signal," I interrupted replacing the device.
Getting up I tilted my head stretching out in the force.
"Not good," I whispered.
The troopers were getting closer. I hated moving Ezra more but I knew what would happen if we were captured.
"Come on Kid, we've got to go," I whispered picking him up.
"Are you ever gonna get tired carrying me everywhere?" He asked.
I chuckled slightly. Yes he was getting to big to carry easily, but I would never get tired of it. Though I was glad for the banter. It was a good distraction.
"Nope, you keep getting hurt. Keep this up, you're going to be thirty and still need me to carry you."
"Then we're really going to be in trouble because you'll be really old," he snarked.
NPOV
Kanan rolled his eyes shifting his boy.
"Just remember Son, I'm only sixteen years older than you, so if I'm really old then so are you."
Ezra huffed but remained quiet. Several minutes of quiet passed between them.
"I'm sorry I'm always getting hurt."
Kanan shifted Ezra's weight a bit more.
"You're still young, if you didn't get into crazy hijinks I would be worried."
Ezra smiled before his body went rigid.
"Ezra?" Kanan questioned as the force blared a loud warning.
He dogged to the left as a red lightsaber flew by. Ezra bit his lip to keep from screaming as his arm was jostle but a smal whimper still escaped.
"Hang on Buddy," Kanan whispered ducking down.
"Papa, he's close," Ezra whispered his eyes fixated on a spot behind them.
Kanan stretched out a moment to find it true. The inquisitor was indeed close by.
Kanan POV
I could almost kick myself by not thinking about the Inquisitor. Surely with the high levels of security of course he would have been here. Deciding to shield both of our signatures I ran from our hiding spot. Ezra clung to me tightly but I knew that all of this running was jarring his arm. After a bit of running, We finally made it out of the forest and onto a set of cliffs.
"Where's Mom?" Ezra asked looking around.
Looking up I flinched as lightening flashed across the sky.
"I don't know Bud?" I said putting him down.
Grabbing my comm I called Hera.
"Spector Two?"
"I read you loud and clear Love. I still have a set of ties on my tail. Just hang tight."
"Yeah no problem with that," I sassed signing off.
Looking back at the forest I stretched out to see where the Imps were. My answer, too close.
"Come on Buddy," I said ruffling his hair. "We have to get out of sight."
Glancing over the side I was relieved to see a hidden ledge. Scooping Ezra up I wen to jump when a blaster bolt hit near my feet. They keep this up I'm going to need a new pair of boots.
"That's quite far enough Jedi."
Ezra POV
I sucked in a breat hearing that voice. Dad placed me on my feet once more before turning around.
"Well I guess you're alot smarter than we give you credit for," he said pushing me behind him.
"Flattery will not get you anywhere," the Inquisitor snarled.
I wanted to shout at him and tell him that it wasn't a compliment but Dad beat me to it.
"That wasn't a compliment," Dad snarked pushing us back.
"Papa, we're getting close to the edge," I whispered as my foot made contact with edge.
"Trying to run Jedi? Surely you wouldn't jump," the Inquisitor taunted.
Dad reached back and patted my shoulder before pushing down on it slightly. His signal to go with whatever he had in mind. Normally it envolved him smooth talking his way out of things, but ever since joing Mom it involved more dangerous things.
"You would be surprised to what I might do?" Dad responded.
The force swelled around him and before anyone could react the Imperials were pushed away. Thinking we might run for it I braced myself to scooped up again. I really needed to tell him to stop doing that. However instead of that Dad grabbed my good arm and dragged us over the edge.
This time I didn't try to hide my squeal of terror.

The two landed on the hidden ledge with a soft thud.
"Ow," Ezra hissed cradling his arm. "I swear if it wasn't broken before it is now."
Kanan gave him a sympathetic smile.
"Don't worry we'll be back on the Ghost soon. For the moment though let's duck inside this cave."
"How did you know this cave would be here?" Ezra asked as they sat down inside.
"I didn't."
Shaking his head Ezra snuggled into Kanan's side thoughts drifting back to earlier this morning.
Flashback
NPOV
The crew was gathered around eating a small breakfast.
"And finally this morning we know more about the attack on the fuel factory late last week," the reporter went on. "Imperial Public Relations have released a statement claiming that these rebels (a picture of the Ghost Crew pops up) are responsible for the loss of hundreds of jobs."
The audio switches to locals voicing their distate.
"These people have no regard for others."
"They're a meance."
"These people need to be dealt with and quickly. They have killed the local ecomony and what's worse they have involved children into their evil plans. I hope the Empire catches them and helps those poor babies."
"The Empire only wants to to help and so far they have done just that. You can get a job and support your family."
"They need to space themselves."
The audio then switches back to the reporter.
"If anyone has any sightings or knows anything, you are highly advised to report it to the correct authorties. As always Long live the Empire."
Hera shut off the projector with a scowl.
"Of course they would say those things. The Imperials have everyone brainwashed."
"Not everyone," Sabine offered. "We do have some allies, right?"
"Yes, but maybe we should take a break from the news," Kanan said. "Besides we need to finalize the plan for our new mission tonight."
Everyone agreed and got up to get their day started. Only Ezra and Chopper remained in the common room.
"Ez," the little droid beebed.
Normally the boy would be following after Kanan like a lothkitten but he had stayed planted, staring at where the holocreen was.
"Chopper are we really the bad guys?" He asked looking up. "Is the Empire right?"
Chopper beeped several things that Ezra was sure his mother would dismantle him for but the thoughts still remained. He knew that what they did helped alot of people and gave them hope but still alot of people said bad things about them.
"Don't listen to what those people say Ezra. They're moofheads and don't what they are talking about."
Ezra sighed looking up at him.
"Chopper I know I'm still really young but sometimes I feel like....I don't know, I just feel weird."
The droid went to respond when Kanan popped his head in.
"Come EJ, we have just enough time to get some training in."
Ezra grinned, eyes brightening.
"Okay!" He said jumping up. "Maybe I can get my own lightsaber."
Kanan shook his head at him fondly.
"You'll get yours when you're ready Kid."
Present
Kanan POV
I sighed in relief as I felt the Imperials leave. Once they were far enough I away did I speak.
"There gone Ezra, we're safe," I said glancing outside.
Ezra shifted trying to make himself smaller.
"What's wrong Buddy? Is it your arm?"
I was starting to worry that he wasn't joking earlier and his arm was indeed broken. I moved to check it but he stopped me.
"It's not my arm," he said. "I mean it still hurts but that's not what's wrong."
I looked outside seeing that the rain had started back up.
"Well we have a little time, why don't you tell what's up?"
"Are we the bad guys?"
The bad guys? Where did he get an idea like that?
"Ezra, we're not the bad guys," I said. "The Empire..."
"Yeah the Empire is the ones thats brainwashed everyone. People are doing what they can to survive, I know. What I don't understand is why I feel so weird about it."
I opened and closed my mouth a few times. Ezra looked away thinking I was mad. In honesty I wasn't surprised that he would be feeling like that.
"Baby Boy," I whispered turning to face him fully. "I'm not mad at you. What you're feeling is totally understandable."
"It is?" He asked looked up.
"Mhmm," I smiled placing a hand on his knee. "Back when the Jedi first fell, I spent some time on the streets. Everyday I would hear people say things, horrible things, about the Jedi. I couldn't understand why they said those things. I even wanted to tell them that they were wrong but I knew that I would out myself, so I stayed quiet. After a few weeks I started to question it. Then I started to hate myself because I believed that being what I was wrong. Luckily I met your Uncle Janus before I got to far off course."
"So you're saying if you hadn't you might have become an Imp?" He chuckled.
"Or something worse," I replied.
"Like what?"
"Like not being your Dad," I said ruffling his hair.
Ezra smiled leaing back against my side.
"I'm glad you did," he yawned.
"I am too, but seriously Son, we're not the bad guys. We may not always doing things right but we look out for others, even those who bad mouth us."
"I still feel weird though," he said.
"You will for awhile but I promise I'll always be there to remind you that it's okay," I whispered.
Ezra sighed letting his eyes close.
"Wake me when Mom get's here."
"Will do Ezra, will do."
Thank you so much for reading and as always please let me know what you thought. Have a great day!!!!
