Chapter 5
My eyes widen and I asked, "What do you remember?" "I-I r-remember.." She suddenly started to laugh a little then louder. Then she let out a sob and started to cry then go back to laughing. The girl was losing it and finally with the mixture of laughter and crying, she started to say over and over, "They're dead, they are all dead!" I quickly made my way to the door and went out. I kept looking into the cell until the door shut.
I backed away until I bumped into something and jumped back scared. I turned then calmed when I saw Kanan, Hera and Rex. I smiled and knew that I was in trouble. When I was going to explain, Kanan put his hand up to stop me from talking. "Punishment later cause you need to tell us somethings about her," he said.
I sighed knowing that I wasn't going to get out of this, "Fine." "Not here though," Hera said and guided us over to a holotable. "Ezra, if you tell us everything you know about her, we'll tell you what we know too," Hera said. "Ok well, she has I few loose screws up in the attic," I said. "I think we got that when we heard the laughter slash sobbing," Rex said.
"Do you know a name or where she came from?" Hera asked. "She said that she can't remember anything except some fragments of memory," I said. "What are the fragments?" Kanan asked me. "She said something about smoke eating up her home and her ship with 2 hundred other kids aboard were the only thing that made it then I don't know the rest. She kept saying it in bits and pieces that it's kind of hard to remember," I admitted after explaining.
"Thank you for telling us," Hera said. "Now it's you turn," I said crossing my arms. "We have the shuttle she was brought in and we found these on board," Rex said and laid a bag onto the table. The bag opened and a bunch of tags with kids the were old and young were spread across the table. "This is that mystery girl's tag," Rex said and handed me a tag with a picture of the girl on it. I didn't say anything when I couldn't figure out what language was written off to the left side.
"No one on the base can read these tags," Rex said. "We tried every language that we thought but none of it matched," he added. "Have you showed this to Sabine, maybe she can-" "Ezra" I looked over at Kanan who had a stern yet calm look, "We already asked her and she said that she has never seen this language before.
"Then how are we supposed to read it," I asked. The three of them glanced at each other. "What?" I asked confused. "We think you should go and ask her if she can read this," Hera said. "What?! Why me?!" I said, "I don't want to go back into storm of crazy again!" "Ezra, calm down," Kanan said. I calmed down and said, "Fine, I'll do it but that doesn't mean I'm going to like it," I said. "We never said that you were going to," Rex said patting my back.
"Ok," I said, "So what did you do with the shuttle and those 2 hundred kids on board?" Hera and Kanan looked over at Rex so I did too. "Uh," Rex said scratching the back of his neck then sadly sighed and looked up, "We brought the shuttle and safely landed it then when we looked inside..." Rex paused to gather his words, "....We were to late." I glanced sadly at Hera and Kanan and they returned it with the same wave of sadness. "She was the only survivor," Rex said, "She was the only one to make it but she seemed traumatized and lost when she finally woke up."
"Finally woke up?" I said. "She was in a coma for a whole month," Rex said, "When she woke up, she was trying to figure out what was going on then freaked out and attacked the doctors and soldiers." "Then you locked her up in that cell," I said, "How long?" "About four days," Rex said, "We were planning on giving her some fresh air today but I'm not sure if she is stable enough."
I was silent for a moment to take all of this in. Her home was destroyed. She can't remember a single thing except fragments of things. Losing her mind. Waking up from a coma for month in a new place. Then locked up like a caged animal who went haywire. She had it tough, way more tough than what I've been through. But now she seems broken and confused and more lost than ever.
"Hey Ezra," I snapped out of my thoughts and looked up at Kanan. "How about you go tell her a story?" He said. "What?" I asked. "She's been through a lot," Hera said, "and has been locked up for four days, how about you go and entertain her with a story." "We know you've been practicing," Kanan said and my eyes widen. "It's ok Ezra," Kanan added, "You haven't read in a long time so of course it would be hard to read."
I calmed down at Kanan's reassuring words and smiled. "Ok," I agreed, "I'll go and tell her one of those Earth myths." I ran to the Ghost and grabbed the book with the tag still clutched in my hand the whole time. I ran to the cell and stopped at the front door. I took a deep breath in and out before opening the door and entered the room to see the girl sitting on the bench being quiet again.
"Well hello," she said and raised her head with a blank face. "Hi," I said as the door closed behind me. "What's with the book?" She asked. "You know what this is but you can't remember your name?" I said confused. "I'm starting to remember bit after bit very slowly so yes," she said. "Well, I was going to read to you," I said and walked over and sat next to her. "I'm going to read an Earth myth," I said.
"Ok," she said quietly that I almost didn't hear here. I looked back at the book and turned through the pages. I stopped and found a good story that Sabine taught me. "I'm going to read The Fox and t-the Le-Leo-Leopard." "The Fox and the Leopard?" She said like it seemed familiar. "Yeah," I said, "Sorry, I'm sort of practicing my reading skills." The girl didn't respond and just stared at the book in my hands. I sighed and started to read the story.
