Three months later part two
Here is the next part. Please enjoy.
Several hours later. Kanan POV
I sighed in relief, finally able to see my son again. When we had arrived at the main ship's med center he was ripped from my arms and it took all my willpower to not fight back. Walking into the small room my heart broke to see him so still. Carefully I picked him up and sat on the bed.
"The good news is, the high fever was his body trying to react to the chemicals," Ashoka said coming to stand beside us..
"But he is going to be okay?" I asked looking up, still clutching my boy to my chest.
"Yes, it could take days, weeks even, for the chemicals to work through his system," Ashoka said a soft smile on her face watching the infant let out a soft sigh of peace.
"He is quite adorable," she said.
"Thank you," I said planting a soft kiss on Ezra's head.
"Is he yours biologically?" Ashoka asked.
"Adopted but I love him as if he was," I said laying my head on Ezra's.
"He truly is a precious gift, exactly what you needed," she said laying a hand on my shoulder before walking out the door.
No sooner did she leave than the rest of the crew followed by Rex, Wolf, and Gregor rushed in to see Ezra.
"Awe," Gregor cooed. "He's a tiny little bugger, ain't he?"
"How old is he?" Zeb asked staring at his tiny friend.
"Six months old," I replied moving Ezra so they could see his tiny face.
"Awe!"
"So how long is he stuck like this?" Sabine asked moving so she could touch the soft cheek.
"Until the chemicals work through his system. It could take a while which stinks because his birthday is in two months," I said looking over at Hera.
"Is he even aware of what's going on?" She asked.
"I don't know. If he is, I don't think he cares at the moment," I chuckled causing the baby to make small laughs in his sleep.
Rex smiled and turned to the other clones.
"Right, men we have baby things to find. Move out!" He ordered.
"Hey Rex!" I called causing them to pause. "Thanks."
The older man smiled and nodded before continuing on his way.
Hera POV
Several weeks have passed and everyone slowly got use to Ezra being baby. I know Kanan is loving it or at least I think he is. Suddenly the cockpit doors snapped opened to reveal said person.
"Hey Love, is something wrong?" I asked noticing his expression.
"No," he said sounding falsely chipper. "Why would anything be wrong. My son is a baby and totally defenseless."
I gave him a weird look as he sat down with a heavy sigh.
"Kanan it sounds like you are upset that he's a baby again?"
"Oh I'm thrilled. I can't tell you how many times I have imagined being able to hold him like that, rock him to sleep with a promise that everything is going to be okay whether you believe it or not. But now the Empire knows that he is a baby and will stop at nothing to get him back. I'm worried."
"Oh Kanan," I said before a scream echoed through his comm. "What was that?"
"Ezra," he said running a hand down his face. "Wanna come with me?"
I nodded and followed him to our bed room to find our infant son crying out for his father.
"Oh what's wrong Baby Boy?" Kanan cooed picking him up from the crib.
The child whimpered his tiny hands clawing for something to grab onto.
"Here Baby," Kanan said giving him one of his large fingers.
Ezra immediately went to stick it in his mouth and Kanan pulled it back.
"Of course," he whispered taking the child's chin and gently pulling it down. "There it is."
"What is it?" I asked.
"His first tooth, poor thing screamed for a week when this sucker came. I'm guessing it's gonna hurt just as bad this time around," Kanan said moving Ezra so he was cradled against his chest.
Ezra cried out again tears starting to fall from his eyes.
"Oh, oh, oh, Ezra, yeah sh..., don't cry Baby yeah. Hera his pacifier is in the nightstand," he said not taking his eyes off the child.
I went and got it and gave it to Kanan, who chuckled in amusement as the baby began to suck noisily on it.
"Did he always do that?" I asked watching him.
"Yeah," Kanan smiled before going over to the bed and sitting down.
I was about to ask him what he was doing when he began to hum.
"Lothcat, Lothcat, in the sky, bright as my baby's eye. Love and laughter ringing free. Joy and glee jubilee. Watch and see, Empire's defeat. Loth cat, Lothcat, watch and see."
I stared wide eyed at Kanan.
Kanan POV
I knew Hera was about to ask where that came from.
"I always sang to him and this was his favorite."
I looked down and sure enough the boy was asleep once again.
"No matter what age Ezra is, he will always be a Daddy's boy, your boy," Hera said kissing my cheek and bending down and kissed Ezra's forehead before walking out.
I watched her go and turned back to the child in my arms. Leaning back I laid Ezra on my chest and just watched him.
"Just like old times, huh EJ?"
He sighed around his pacifier.
"Yeah, except this time Janus isn't here to tell me I'm messing up. He isn't here to warn me to hide when the Empire comes checking."
I just hugged him closer.
"Oh Buddy, I love having you as a baby but I want my twelve year old back. I want to be able to know that you are capable of defending yourself. I know I get overprotective but it's because I love you so much. That's why I hate all of this military protocol nonsense. I just want to protect you and our family. I didn't sign up to fight beside soldiers and join their little army. I wanted to raise you properly and live peacefully. Then again if I hadn't joined with Hera then we wouldn't have experienced or grown like we have." I said kissing his tiny head head.
Unknown to me, Hera was standing just outside of the door and heard everything.
NPOV
It had been a solid month and Kanan was getting worried that his son was going to be stuck as a baby forever. Currently him and Hera was in the main ship going through a debriefing or at least Kanan was. He knew that he was getting some weird looks with Ezra in his arms but after this last mission he wanted nothing more than to hold his son tight and never let go.
"Kanan I know that you tried to help but there was nothing you could do," Commander Sato said eyeing him.
Kanan wanted to shout and tell him that there was and the child didn't deserve to die but he knew that what the man said was true.
Flashback several hours ago
Kanan and the others were going on a supply run for Tarkin Town when they saw that the whole city had been burned to the ground.
"What happened?" Rex asked looking at the charred remains.
Kanan shivered as the force let off feeling of terror.
"We need to see if there are any survivors," Hera said walking forward.
Kanan wanted to go back into the ship to his baby but his baby was on the Ghost, with the fleet, in the care of Gregor and Wolf. So he followed Hera through the street looking for anyone that could have survived. After about ten minutes they came across the small body of a five year old.
"Hera!" Kanan yelped dropping beside the child.
Hera ran over to him and felt the tears well up. Child was only five and most of his body was burnt.
"Kanan don't," she said grabbing his arm as he reached out.
"Hera he needs help," he protested.
"He's dead Kanan," she said calmly or as calmly as she could. "The best thing we can do is give him a burial."
The man gazed back at the child and stood to his feet.
"Rex! Zeb!" He called before walking away.
Kanan couldn't handle it and needed to get away. When he finally stopped he was on the other side of Tarkin Town. He let out a heavy sigh and tried to find his focus.
"Kanan?" Sabine's small voice came from behind him.
He turned to see her arms wrapped around herself fighting the tears in her eyes.
"I know Hun," he said gently before pulling her into a hug.
"Why would they do this?" Her cry was muffled against his chest.
"I don't know," he said hugging her tighter.
After a few more minutes she pulled back with an apology.
"hey there is nothing wrong with needing to let out your emotions," he said putting his hands on her shoulders. "You know that if you need to, Hera and I will always be a shoulder to lean on."
"I know," Sabine nodded before turning back to the burned town.
"Don't think about it," Kanan said wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
"Will things ever get better?"
"Yep, and we will be there to see it," Kanan said as they started to back toward the shuttle. "Come on, there is nothing more we can do."
The ride back to the fleet was a quiet one and Kanan was doing everything he could to not think about what had occurred. As soon as Hera docked the Phantom the first thing he did was rush out of the ship and down to his room for a shower. Once he was done he ran toward the common room to find Ezra laying in his play pen and the clones sprawled out on the floor.
"What happened to you two?"
"Your baby is what happened," Gregor groaned looking up at him.
"I don't care if he is a baby, Ezra is still Ezra," Wolf commented getting to his feet.
Kanan just shook his head and went over to the play pen where the boy reached up wanting to be picked.
"Did you wear out Uncle Gregor and Wolfe, Buddy?" He cooed picking up the baby.
Ezra babbled happily, enjoying the attention. Kanan went to say something else when he comm beeped.
"Kanan? Think you can tear yourself away from Ezra? We need you in the debriefing room," Hera's voice came.
The man sighed and looked down at the baby.
"Fine," he said hanging up the comm.
"I'll just tell her that wouldn't stop crying and I had to bring him," he whispered. "Yeah she'll believe that just like she believes that Zeb was the one who painted Chopper pink."
Ezra made a noise like, who me?
"Yeah that's right, I know it was you and Sabine who did that," Kanan said kissing the boy's head before carrying him out of the room.
Present. Kanan POV
I looked down in frustration wondering when this meeting was going to end. Ezra was curled up against my chest snoozing away.
"At least you can sleep," I told him quietly and rubbed his back.
Sato droned on and on about what we need to do about making sure the rebellion grew in numbers. After about ten minutes more, Ezra began to whimper in pain. I bounced him gently trying to calm him down.
"Kanan," Hera hissed eying the baby.
"I'm trying," I answered as he woke up his tiny fist clutching my shirt. "What's wrong Baby?"
He whimpered his blue eyes focusing solely on me. I smiled as his force signature connected to mine. Nodding I kissed his head and went to leave when Sato's voice stopped me.
"We aren't done."
"Well I am," I respond. "I'm a parent first and foremost. Now if you will excuse me."
With that I turned and walked out, not caring about the looks I was getting. I made it back my room and decided to give my boy a bath thinking it might help. Once that was done I laid him down on the bed. He started crying harder as the pain increased.
"Shh...it's okay I've got you," I soothed kissing his cheek.
He was in pain and there was nothing I could do to make it stop.
"Don't worry Baby," I whispered to him climbing into the bed curling around him. "Your body is fighting the last of the chemicals and you will be back to normal soon."
He continued to cry for the next few hours, and I guess I drifted off. A feeling in the force woke me slightly and it wasn't until I felt something shift beside me did I wake up fully. Looking down I saw my twelve year old beside me sleeping like an angel.
"Welcome back Little Light," I whispered kissing his forehead and going back to sleep.
Hera POV
I was angry at Kanan for leaving the debriefing like he did but I guess he is right. We are parents first and rebels second. After the meeting I walked back into the Ghost and to my room. When the door opened I saw the cutest sight. Ezra lay across his father's stomach drool dribbling down his chin and Kanan had a hand on the boy's back mindlessly rubbing patterns on it.
"Kanan?" I called softly.
A snore was my answer. I guess all of the events wore both of them out. Walking over to Ezra I kissed his head.
"Welcome back, EJ."
Rolling over he smiled in his sleep.
"Papa, Mama."
I shook my head and climbed into bed.
I do hope you enjoyed this part. The next one will be the Siege of Lothal but until then have a great day!
