NPOV
Hera had reserves when Kanan told her to leave without him and Ezra but she also knew that if Kanan answered then this time he would definitely be behind them. She however was not prepared for the sight that greeted her when both of the ships docked and away in hyperspace. She got the hatch open and climbed out of the tie fighter to see Kanan standing there holding their son tight to his chest. She could see the man's shoulders shaking and instantly knew something was wrong.
"Kanan?" She asked walking over to him. "Kanan what's wrong?"
He looked up at her with red rimmed eyes and uttered the words no mother ever wants to hear.
"Ezra's dead."
That had been two weeks ago.
Hera POV
I sighed as I walked into Kanan's hospital room. He had collapsed after he said that Ezra was gone. I can still remember how his voice ached and the brief moments when he woke during surgery screaming for the boy. The doctors had to physically knock him out. I sank into a chair beside Kanan and took his hand.
"Oh Love you have missed a lot in the last two weeks," I whispered.
As if he heard me, his hand twitched.
"Kanan? Love can you hear me?"
He moved again and softly groaned his eyes fluttering open.
"Hera?" He whispered.
"Easy Kanan," I said moving the bed so he could sit up.
"Hera...Ezra he...he...,"
"Shh...it's alright, he's been taken care of," I responded.
He gave a dry sob his chest heaving. I got him a drink and helped him so he didn't choke.
"Please tell me that he's at peace," he pleaded tears forming in his eyes.
"Well as peaceful as he can be with a fractured neck, skull, and a broken arm," I said grimly.
He gave me a terrified look. Of course he didn't know, he passed out believing his son was gone.
"Hun, once I pried you off Ezra, I checked for a pulse just to make sure. I found one very faint. In fact his heart stopped twice before the doctors could get everything under control," I told him.
"You mean he's...he's...he's..."
"Yes, Kanan, our son is still alive."
Kanan POV
Ezra's alive! Ezra's alive! My sweet baby is alive, severely injured, but alive. I wanted to get up and go to where he was but Hera pushed me back down with a glare.
"I want to see Ezra," I said.
"An you will when the doctor says you can move again."
"What could possibly be wrong with me" I asked.
"Kanan you should be in a body cast with as many injuries as you have. The only thing that isn't injured is your shoulders up and one of them is dislocated!" She argued.
I sighed slumping against the pillow.
"That's not the worse," I muttered.
"What?"
" I died Hera! I went into cardiac arrest and somehow was able to come back. Janus met me and said I had a choice and even one of them wasn't even a guarantee that Ezra would make it in time. The worse part about it was that I would be leaving my baby alone in the galaxy. Something I swore I would never do and you know what I did it anyway. I left him alone Hera and he almost died. I lost the most important thing to me," I ranted and quiet frankly I didn't care.
My son was who knows where and was probably scared to death. There was no way I was going to leave him alone again. Hera went to respond when there was a knock on the door.
"Captain Syndulla, pardon the intrusion," a nurse said coming in.
Hera got up and stood where the nurse couldn't see my face.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"I am sorry but we need you to come sign some forms. The bacata has done all it can do. There is still no guarantee that your boy will live past these injuries," she said her words making my blood go cold.
"Fine, but I request that he be moved in here with Kanan," she said.
"Yes Ma'am we can do that," the nurse said leaving.
Hera turned back to me.
"Why didn't you tell her I was awake?"
"Becasue they know Kanan and she would have softened it for your sake. I need to know exactly what is happening," she replied.
I sighed and closed my eyes thinking about my boy. Hera left and I guess my medicine started to kick in again.
Kanan's dream.
I had just gotten off work and was on my way home. It was cold and even started to rain. I wanted nothing more than to go home and go to bed. As I was walking past an alley way, I heard an infant cry out. I paused and I heard it again. The force seemed to pulling at my mind telling me to go investigate. I pulled back and started to leave when the shrill cries got to me. I walked into the alley and just under a covering was a box.
"What?"
Ok the force wanted me to find a box? But the cries were coming from inside of it. I lifted the lid to see a small infant wrapped in a thin blue blanket. I looked around to see if there was anyone hiding but it was deserted. Carefully I lifted the baby out of box trying hard not to cringe at how hard he was shaking or the pale blue color of his lips.
"Who do you belong to huh?" I asked wrapping the child in my coat hoping to use my body heat.
I looked down to see a note wrapped in plastic. I picked it up and placed it in my pocket.
"Come on Baby, it's ok I got you. I'll take you home and take care of you," I whispered covering his head and quickly made my way home.
"Janus? Janus you home?" I called entering the small apartment.
Silence was my answer.
"Of course your not," I muttered going into my room.
Ever since we had moved to Garel, I had been seeing less of the man. Carefully I took the child out of my coat and laid him on my bed. I grabbed the note out of my pocket and began to read it.
"Dear whoever,
This is Ezra and he was born on Empire day. He cries a lot and is a mistake. He's your problem now.
Signed Mira."
My eyes widened in realization. This mother had just left her baby to die in a box. I looked over to the boy to see him still shivering but not as much as before.
"Wow I guess you and me are a lot alike huh Kid?" I said stroking the baby's cheek gently.
"Who would that be Kanan?" Janus asked from behind me.
I whirled around to see him looking really tired if not a little drunk.
"I uh..." I stuttered not sure what to say.
Fortunately Ezra started crying. I picked him up and began to rock him gently patting his back.
"What the? No, no Kanan, I don't care what bet you lost you are not keeping it," Janus said.
"It's not an it Janus and I didn't lose a bet, I found him in an alley," I said holding out the note.
Janus took it and read it.
"Your kidding right? Kanan you can't care for this baby, you're still a kid yourself," he said looking angrily at the note.
"I can too, I'm sixteen not ten," I argued.
The man just handed me the note and left the room. I quickly followed after him.
"Janus?" I questioned seeing him putting his coat back on.
"Look if your determined to keep him then you're gonna need supplies. I'll be back, try not to kill the little one," he said before leaving.
I looked down to see the little boy now sleeping peacefully against my shoulder. I wasn't sure if I was cut out to be a parent but the feeling of being needed for something better than bar keep was thrilling.
"I don't know what to do next but I promise to take care of you," I whispered kissing the little forehead smiling as Ezra smiled in his sleep.
Little did I know that Janus Kasmir was standing just outside the door listening the whole time.
Present
I jerked awake my heart pounding in my ears.
"That's right," I whispered. "Mira abandoned and left him to die. I wrote the other note for when he started asking questions."
I looked over to the side to see Hera standing by another bed. From the amount of machines I assumed it was Ezra.
"Hera?"
She turned and I could see the tears in her eyes.
"Hera please?" I begged.
She nodded and came to my side.
"I spoke with the doctor while you were out. He said that one more go in the bacata tank and you will able to get up and move."
"I need to see my son before hand," I said glancing over to the door.
A doctor and a couple of nurses came in before Hera could respond. They tried to be careful in getting me into a wheelchair but it still hurt.
"Sorry Mr. Jarrus," the nurse apologized.
"Kanan, and I need to do one more thing before I go," I said looking at Hera.
She smiled and wheeled me over to the bed. Carefully I leaned forward grasping the small hand in mine. It broke my heart to see him so still. His head was wrapped up tight, a brace around his neck, and his arm was in a cast.
"Oh Buddy," I whispered squeezing his hand. "I'm so sorry. I should have never brought you on board. This is all my fault, I'm so sorry."
I didn't care if it hurt I stood to my feet and kissed his forehead. Hera grasped my arm gently pulling me back into my seat.
"Watch over him?" I asked still holding his hand.
"Always, now go get taken care of so you can come back and take care of him," Hera said placing a hand on my shoulder.
I squeezed Ezra's hand one last time before placing it on the bed. I sighed and allowed the nurse to wheel me out not knowing what was about to come.
Yes, Ezra is still alive. However before everything is said and done, they still have to go through one more trial. Hope you enjoyed.
