Chapter 15: Karabast

"Are you kidding me?!"

Dev started to curse in multiple languages, walking around frantically and yelling at the dark sky. Kanan understood very little of what his son was saying, but he was letting him scream until the boy felt his anguish was voiced properly.

When they had returned back to where the Inquisitor had been handcuffed, they had found themselves empty-handed. The Inquisitor was gone, and his lightsaber that they had dropped a while away was also missing in action.

There weren't even footprints to guide them as to where he had gone.

They were back to square one, but worse. Not only was Ezra missing, but the Inquisitor knew that, as well as the fact that they were all quite alive and here on this forsaken planet. This was information that would surely be relayed to not only the Second Brother, but to the entire Empire.

The galaxy was about to come crashing down on their heads.

"We should go after him." Came a frustrated voice behind him.

Kanan noticed that Dev had finally stopped swearing, and turned. The boy's face was deflated, his hair flattened with sweat and his normally bright emerald eyes dull. Yet Kanan could still sense his son's determination–and his frustration.

"As much as I tend to agree with you, I don't know if there would be much point," Kanan offered a small smile. "I'd love to deny it, but we have to face the fact that the Empire now knows where we are. Going after the Inquisitor wouldn't solve that problem, likely just worsen it. We'd be going in blind, without any idea of where our friends are, likely into a trap."

"But at least if we went after him, we could find out some more information on this 'shadow'." Dev persisted.

"Dev, like you suggested earlier, we need to find Ezra and Ahsoka, and then get off this planet. The longer we stay here, the more trouble we're going to be in. It's not like the spirits here are on our side." Kanan pointed out.

Dev stayed silent, defeated and unable to argue against what his father had said. Sometimes, you just had to accept that you had been beaten.

Even if you didn't like nor agree with it.

"You want my guess? We'll run into our new friend along the way." His father continued.

Sighing, Dev nodded his heavy head. He was low on both sleep and energy, but he pushed it aside. There were more pressing things to deal with. "Alright. Which way?"

As if on cue, a colossal rumbling shook the ground beneath their feet. Both of them nearly lost their footing as they turned towards the Sith Temple. Dev's eyes widened in shock as his father's widened in pure fear. The evil temple itself had begun to open, and violet electricity seemed to be beaming down from the oblivion coloured sky and into it.

"That way." Kanan groaned, immediately starting to run towards the madness, knowing that his son would be right behind him, even if unwillingly. He could sense a use of the dark side in the same direction as the temple, and while he could sense that the use was from someone he knew, he could not pinpoint who. The dark side here was clouding his use of the Force.

All he could do was hope and pray to the Force that it wasn't Ezra, even though he suspected that the Palawan was involved in some way.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Dev told him as he caught up to run beside his father. Something was off about this situation, and he didn't mean the Empire or the Inquisitor or even the creepy Sith Temple. He was missing something, something very obvious.

"No kidding," Kanan sighed. "Why do I know Ezra's involved in this somehow?"

And with that statement, the missing piece Dev had been searching for fell perfectly into place.

"Ezra must be with the 'shadow'! He must have been the one with Ezra in my vision!!"

Kanan gave him a look that very clearly asked for more explanation as they continued to race towards the Sith Temple.

"Think about it! The Inquisitors are here searching for this 'shadow'. While they might explore the Sith Temple to look for him or her, I doubt they would be very interested in opening it. This 'shadow', however, obviously poses a threat to them, and according to the Eighth Brother, he or she likely wouldn't like us either. So the 'shadow' must be doing something with the Temple, in order to gain something. Some kind of power, likely. And when Ezra fell into the ground, we weren't that far from the temple. It makes logical sense, and what with my vision..." Dev trailed off, worry evident in his unwavering voice.

"It very well could be," Kanan agreed. "But then, who is this 'shadow'?"

Dev kept silent. He had no plausible theories as of yet as to who the mysterious 'shadow' was, and he was hoping that his current one about Ezra being with this 'shadow' was wrong. The hooded figure in his vision had claimed that Ezra was 'his'. And if that was this 'shadow' that they should "want nothing to do with", to quote the Eighth Brother... Well, nothing good could come out of that, that was for sure. But as for that part of his vision, he was certainly not mentioning it to Kanan. It wasn't confirmed anyway, and hopefully would never be. There was no reason to worry his father any further over a simple theory.

"I'm calling Ezra," His father broke the silence, reaching for the comlink dangling off his belt.

Dev looked at him sharply. "Are you sure? The Inquisitors could easily track our signal, since we're on the same planet as them."

Kanan came to a halt, and as his son stopped beside him, looked him dead in the eyes.

"We have no choice–We have to risk it. I know that I've refrained from using it due to that exact fear, but Dev: Ezra is missing, there's a Sith Temple opening, there's some random 'shadow' running rampant, and not only is the Empire about to begin closing in again, but Ezra's father will be with them. We have to find Ezra before the Inquisitors–especially his father–find any of us. And if what the Eighth Brother said earlier is true, then we don't have much time."

His father's voice and eyes shone with a humming urgency as he spoke, and Dev knew immediately that Kanan was right. They were all in far deeper now than they had ever wanted to be, and the time of pretending that everything would be fine was over.

Finally, the time to go back to being the people they truly were had come.

At the very least, Dev felt grateful for that aspect of this mission.

Jedi and rebels once again–And hopefully, for good this time.

"Do it," He nodded at the comlink, his hand fingering the lightsaber on his belt out of instinct. Instinct that he was glad to be able to listen to again. "Enough of all this hiding."

Kanan smiled a genuine smile at his son. Using the codename out of some small glimmer of hope that it would disguise him from the Imperials, he tapped in his son's frequency for a hologram connection and held the device out in front of him as Dev came to stand beside him.

"Eli? Eli, can you hear me?!"
