Chapter 10: Everything Was Taken

It had been a long day.

He and his Jedi friends' cover had been blown, they had disobeyed direct orders from the rebellion, the Empire knew they were alive, their friend was missing, they had suffered numerous injuries and falls, they'd run into an Inquisitor, and he was now on his way to a Sith temple with a creepy old man who knew much more than he appeared to.

Ezra really just wanted to lie down and sleep.

But that wasn't an option right now.

"Hold up one minute!" Ezra charged ahead and blocked the stranger's path. "How do you know so much about the Sith, if you've been stuck on this planet for so long?"

The man just looked at him. "Young Jabba, the galaxy is the same place it was before I was marooned here–Darkened by the Sith's hold on it. It was terrible when I left–How could it have changed so much in a matter of years?"

"The Empire may still be around, but it's just a matter of time until they fall. People have hope now–you should too." Ezra stated.

The old man gave him a slight smile. "Perhaps."

They walked on in deadly silence for a few more minutes.

Ezra grunted in exhaustion and frustration. He was concerned about Kanan and Dev. Inquisitors were unpredictable, and there were probably more of them. There always seemed to be. "How much further?"

"You worry about your friends?" The 'Old Master' questioned.

"They need my help." Ezra replied.

"Yes," The older man sighed. "And with good reason. The Inquisitor is powerful."

Ezra came to a halt. What else did this creepy dude living in the shadows know? "Wait, you know about the Inquisitor?"

The stranger turned around and faced him, leaning heavily on his cane. "He is my enemy. All Inquisitors and their masters are my enemies."

"Were you a Jedi?" Ezra asked curiously.

"Uh.... no." The man chuckled slightly, seeming to lose himself in his memories for a moment before coming back to reality. "No, no. But I was once a Force-wielder, long ago. Long, long ago."

Ezra felt time slow down around him as a thought dawned on him. It felt like somebody had dumped ice cold water over him. "Then.... you're a Sith!" He exclaimed, taking a step backward. "I thought you said you wanted to destroy them!"

The 'Old Master's' free hand twitched before curling into a tight fist. "The Sith. The Sith took everything from me: Ripped me from my mother's arms, murdered my brother, used me as a weapon, and then cast me aside. Abandoned me. Once, I had power; Now I have nothing. Nothing." He snarled angrily, turning away to face the shadows, but his rage wasn't directed at Ezra.

Ezra felt strangely compelled to comfort him. Maybe it was because he had outright accused this man of being his worst enemy. "I know how you feel."

The 'Old Master' turned to Ezra, seemingly surprised.

"The Empire, it took away my planet, my home, and my mother, and my father." Ezra said bitterly. "Then it took away my crew, my second family, when I was forced to go into hiding from the Sith and the Empire. I spent three years stuck in a hut on a desert planet, with almost everyone I knew and cared about cut out of my life."

"And you want revenge." The stranger stated.

"I want justice!"

"Yes, yes!" The old man exclaimed in his dramatic way. "And you shall have it, for I have discovered the key."

"The key to what?" Ezra asked.

"The key, the key to destroying the Sith!"

"That is the knowledge inside the temple?" Ezra asked hopefully, seeking confirmation.

"Yes, that temple holds secrets of the Sith, secrets that have been buried with the dead for thousands of years!"

"And you'll share this knowledge with me?" Ezra questioned, still unsure of this man.

"Yes. Yes, of course." The stranger nodded, his voice soothing.

Ezra made his decision. "Then I'm in. We've waited too long to destroy the Sith. I spent years in hiding, waiting for the 'right moment' to take them down. I'm not waiting any longer. This ends now."

He was startled by the wave of rage that flowed through him at the thought of destroying the Sith. The craving he felt, for the Sith to end.... It was extremely strong. He hadn't felt anger or a lusting for revenge like this in years–since his time on the Executor.

It's not a lusting for revenge. It's wanting justice. The Sith–and the Empire–plague the galaxy and hurt and kill millions. If we take the Sith down, the Empire crumbles, and freedom is restored. That's all I want–Justice. How much have they take from me?! They deserve to go down–to burn. That's not anger–That's making it right.

Ezra took a deep breath. He was a Jedi, and he was on the light side. He could do this–He could go into the Sith Temple and not be tempted.

He knew he could.

He was just being silly. His nerves were getting to him.

Time to focus.

As he continued to follow the 'Old Master' towards the temple, the words of a song resurfaced in his mind.

I didn't know what you were going through
I thought that you were fine
Why did you have to hide?

I didn't want to let you down
But the truth is out
It's tearing me apart, not listening to my heart

I really had to go
And I would never stop you
Even though it changed
Nothing has to change

And you can find me in the space between
Where two worlds come to meet
I'll never be out of reach
'Cause you're a part of me so you can find me in the space between
You'll never be alone
No matter where you go
We can meet in the space between

And nothing can stay the same
It's growing pains
Be proud of all the scars
They make you who you are

I know you have to stay
But I'll never really leave you
Nothing has to change even though it changed

I know you have to stay
But I'll never really leave you
Nothing has to change
Even though it changed

There are no words left to say
I know you gotta find your place
But this is not the end (no)

Even if we're worlds apart
You're still in my heart
It will always be you and me, yeah

You can find me in the space between
Where two worlds come to meet
I'll never be out of reach (I'll never be out of reach)
'Cause you're a part of me so you can find me in the space between
You'll never be alone
No matter where you go
We can meet in the space between

No matter where you go (no matter where you go)
We can meet, in the space between

Ezra just wished that he could finally find the space between himself and the rest of his crewmates, who somewhere across the galaxy, were still constantly in his heart and mind.

"Space Between" by Dove Cameron and Sofia Carson, from the Disney movie "Descendants 2". This song always hits me right in the feels. -LRUF
