Chapter 21
(Emma pov)
I wake up in the morning and almost instantly, remember last night's conversation with Ezra. Well, more of an argument than a conversation.
Hera is already gone, so I lay back and think about last night, when I was arguing with Ezra.
Flashback:
I said goodnight to Jessie Lovt and raced out of the room. Ezra followed me, after a moment. He knew I was angry-and upset. Why hadn't he bothered to tell me that he had a girlfriend? I wouldn't have told him I liked him then. I wouldn't have gotten in the way of the two of them. And I almost let him kiss me?! What in the Force did I ever do to deserve this?
I had started to open the door to my room, when I felt a hand on my wrist. "Em, wait."
I stopped, not turning around. "Ezra, go away."
"Emma, please," he begged. "Just let me explain."
"What's there to explain?" I asked angrily, whirling around. Ezra's hand was still on my wrist. "You have another girlfriend. So why did you tell me that you like me? Was it for fun? Was it a game?!"
"No, it wasn't. Emma, you've got the wrong idea. Just let me...Wait, 'another girlfriend'? What did you mean by that?" He had a sly look on his face.
"I meant exactly what I said. That you and Jessie are a couple." His hand was still on my wrist, making me feel unfocused. Something I never should be.
He chuckled, after a moment of surprise. "Emma, that's not-"
I finally snapped out of it and pulled away from his grip. "Just leave me alone." Then I entered Hera and my room and slammed the door. Then I fell asleep.
Back To Present:
I groan and get out of bed. I have to talk to Ezra and figure this out. I went to bed in my clothes, since I didn't have any others and I didn't want to ask Hera for more, so I'm already dressed. I just have to get ready. I slide my handgun blaster-the one Ezra and I bought in the marketplace a day ago-into my holster and turn to the dresser, looking for something to brush my hair with.
First, I see a note on the dresser, and gaze into the mirror over it before I read the note. I see my reflection. My mother always said that my shiny, straight black hair and chocolate coloured eyes would make any Imperial Governor's son fall for me. She wanted me to marry an Imperial Governor's son that she knew. His name was Blake and he was a jerk. He proposed to me at his father's demand a month ago, and now we are-WERE-engaged. My mother said that I had to marry him when I turned 18. So much for that now, huh Mom? I like Ezra. Even if it's not love, I don't care right now. He's kind and sweet, and way nicer than Blake ever was. Only thing is though, what about Jessie? I have to talk to Ezra and figure all of this out.
In the mirror's reflection, I see my new clothes. So much better than my Cadet uniform. I see how pretty I am, how much older I've gotten in the past few years. Time really flies by. It seems like yesterday I was 10 years old, and running around the fields with Ezra as much as I wanted. Before everything changed. Before I was a Cadet, before my mother betrothed me. Before anything mattered besides our friendship. Now there's loyalties and wars going on, and rebels and Sith and all of this! I wish that it could go back to when all that mattered was our friendship.
After a moment of thinking, I sigh and pick up the note.
Emma,
We left you a few things in the top drawer of the dresser. They're from Sabine, Arianna, and I. We all thought that since you didn't have a lot of possessions right now, you probably needed some things. Hope they suit you and work well, they're fairly new.
-Hera
I smile at the note. These rebels are so nice, especially the girls. They're been so kind to me, even though I've barely been here two days. I already feel like they're family.
I open the top dresser drawer and smile again. There's a hairbrush, some pyjamas, a blank notebook, and another spare shirt, this time in red. I grab the hairbrush and comb my hair, then put on the new shirt. It fits perfectly. It must have been Arianna's or Sabine's.
I walk out of my room after putting the items back in their drawer, and head to the kitchen area. Hera and the girls look up when I walk in. No Ezra or Jessie in sight, but Kanan, Zeb, and Chopper are there, as well as another boy I don't know.
"Emma, this is Leo. Leo, this is Emma. Leo is my younger brother," Hera introduces us, smiling.
"Hey," I smile at Leo.
"Hey." He grins back. We stare at each other in silence for a moment, just smiling.
The others simply watch. Sabine just watches with an interested look on her face. Oh, don't you even think that.
I turn to the girls. "Thanks for the stuff. I really like it."
They all shrug. "You're welcome. The shirt was from me, same with the hairbrush." Arianna smiles.
Guessed it.
"The notebook was from me," Hera says. "I figured you might need a place to just write down your thoughts. It's been a really stressful time for you, so I thought it might help."
"The pyjamas were mine. I thought you might like to sleep in something other than your clothes." Sabine laughs. "Hera noticed that last night."
I laugh as well. "Definitely. Thanks you guys. I really appreciate it."
They all smile. "You're welcome."
Just then, Ezra walks in. He stops when he sees me. His eyes widen and I swear I see a little bit of red in his cheeks. Is he blushing? No, I must be imagining it.
"Wow Em, you look great," he says, stunned. He looks me up and down. "Wow," he says again.
"Thanks," I offer a slight smile, then get serious. "We need to talk."
He nods. "Follow me. I know a place where we can talk in private."
Kanan gets this weird look on his face then. Whatever.
I glance at the others, mouth another 'Thank you' to the girls, then glare at Zeb, who's silently laughing at Ezra's face, then follow after Zeb stops laughing. I smirk. My death stare is the best. It worked on Ellie, and it works on a grown Lasat. Ha.
I feel a pang of guilt at Ellie's name, then shake it off. I hope she's okay, but there's nothing I can do. She couldn't come with us; she's too young. The best I can hope for is that Mom and Dad don't send HER off to the Academy as well. Or blame her for my defect from the Empire.
I follow Ezra as he leads me up some ladder rungs and we emerge on top of the Ghost. We sit down on the roof of the Ghost and just watch the prairies and the sky, like we used to, before everything got complicated.
After a few minutes of silence, he turns to me. "Can I explain?" He asks, and I nod.
"Jessie is my ex-girlfriend," Ezra says. "She was a part of our crew for a while, but she left about a year ago. She had a vision-she's Force-sensitive-and she left to go fulfill it, I guess. I don't really know much more than that. She accidentally said that she was on Dagobah, but why? Isn't it a swamp all over the planet? But anyway, we basically broke up and she's dating Leo now."
I sit there, stunned. "Wow. I didn't realize... I thought that you and her were still..."
"Dating?" Ezra finishes, and I nod. "No. We're not."
"Okay. Ezra, I'm sorry that I misjudged you and assumed things. I just thought...."
"I know." We sit in silence again for a few minutes, watching the sun rise. I lean my head on Ezra's shoulder. He turns to me and pulls me closer. I lean in....
