Phantom Apprentice (Part 1)

So, this was originally only going to be one part, but it got really long, so I decided to split it into two parts. Part two is already partially done and should be out soon so you guys won't have to wait too long for the ending. Anyways, hope y'all enjoy!

"The time of the Jedi has passed. They cannot defeat Sidious," Maul stated. He paused for a second before continuing, "but, together, you and I can." Ahsoka thought for a moment. On one hand, she wanted to believe what he was saying and help stop Sidious before he even got started, but on the other hand, if the Jed couldn't defeat Sidious, what hope did they have?

"Every choice you have made... has led you to this moment," Maul said extending his hand for Ahsoka to take. It was like time froze around them, Ahsoka still in thought contemplating her options. The window next to them shattered, but neither payed it any mind, they were too consumed in their conversation.

After several moments passed, Ahsoka had reached a decision. "I will help you," Ahsoka said half-heartedly. She still wasn't sure this was the best idea. "But you must answer one question."

"You have but to ask," he replied.

"What do you want with Anakin Skywalker?"

"He... is the key to everything."

"To bring balance to the force?" Ahsoka questioned.

"To destroy," Maul corrected. "He has long been groomed for his role, as my Master's new apprentice."

"You lie!" Ahsoka didn't want to believe it. Didn't want to believe that her best friend, her big brother, could turn to the darkness. Sure she knew he was unlike other Jedi with the way he conducted himself, but Anakin Skywalker would never join the Sith.

Maul chuckled. "I'm afraid not. In fact, I was so certain of his fate that I orchestrated this war to lure him here with Kenobi to kill him. Thus, depriving Sidious of his prized pupil." Ahsoka stood glued to the ground. She didn't want to believe it.

"Search your feelings. You know it to be true," Maul encouraged. Ahsoka closed her eyes and looked deep down. She wanted to tell him he was wrong, that Anakin could never, but she couldn't. What she felt through the force was telling her that Maul was right, that Anakin was falling. She had to get back to the Temple before it was too late.

"You're right... I need to get back to the Temple and stop him before it's too late," Ahsoka said, a year forming in her eye.

"It is too late for that. By the time we get there he will have fallen under the control of Sidious, the only thing we can do is... kill him."

"I will refuse kill him. I know there's still good in him."

"Maybe, but you won't be able to break him free. The only way to save the galaxy will be to kill him. You must ask yourself if saving the life of a singular person is worth risking the lives of millions."

Ahsoka sighed, Maul was right. If Anakin could not be reasoned with, he- he had to be killed. The thought of it broke her to pieces, and she just felt like dying right then and there.

"Now come, we must leave now," Maul said as he ran off. Ahsoka followed quickly behind. There was a Mandalorian fighter sitting right outside, Maul must have anticipated needing to make a quick getaway. The two hopped in and quickly took off.

Ahsoka took this chance to contact Rex. She pressed the button on her comm and spoke, "Rex?"

"Yes commander?" Came Rex's reply.

"Slight change of plans. Something is happening with Anakin, and Maul and I are going to help," Ahsoka explained.

"So let me get this straight, you joined forces with the person we were sent here to capture? Not to mention the fact that he's an ex-Sith and extremely manipulative?"

"Uhmmm... yeah sounds about right." Ahsoka could heat Rex sigh over the comm.

"Be careful kid."

"Aren't I always?" Ahsoka replied with a giggle.

Rex chuckled. "See you soon."

With her talk with Rex concluded, she turned her focus back to the ship. She could see that they were already in hyperspace and knew that it was only a matter of time until they reached Coruscant. Hold on Skyguy

Once Maul and Ahsoka exited hyperspace, they both immediately felt a cold chill travel down their spines.

"What was that?" Ahsoka questioned.

Maul didn't look at her, but just responded in a monotone voice, "It has begun."

"What? What has begun?" Ahsoka asked frantically.

This time Maul turned around. "The demise of the Jedi, the rise of Sidious, and the fall... of your master."

Ahsoka fought back tears as she slumped into her seat on the ship. She traveled deep into thought. Could she really kill Anakin if it came down to it? I mean sure he wasn't probably going to be the same Anakin she knew, he would be a version of Anakin consumed by darkness, by hate and anger, fueled by loss and pain. Even knowing this, the young woman wasn't sure she'd be able to kill him. He had practically raised her as a sibling these last 3 years, supported her in everything she did, loved her.

Ahsoka was jarred from her thoughts as she felt the ship touch down on a landing pad outside of the Jedi Temple. What she saw when she looked up was like something out of a nightmare. The Temple was in flames, and she could feel the pain of thousands of Jedi dying. Ahsoka gripped her head and staggered in pain as she felt the screams of them all.

"What's- what's happening???" Ahsoka screamed in agony.

"Exactly what I have told you," Maul stared simply. "The time of the Jedi has passed, they are being killed off as per Sidious's plan."

"We have to stop it!"

"It is too late for that," Maul snapped. "All we can do now is stop Skywalker before it's too late."

Ahsoka opened her mouth to protest, but knew it was useless. Maul was right, there was nothing they could do for the dead Jedi now.

The pair made their way to the entrance of the Jedi Temple fairly quickly, with no resistance. Sidious probably wasn't expecting anyone to come INTO the Temple. Once they entered, however, the feeling Ahsoka had when she first saw the state of the Temple grew tenfold. What she saw, was Clones, specifically members of the 501st, the Clones she knew personally, her friends, firing on Jedi. Ahsoka was frozen in place. She couldn't believe that they would do this.

The only reason Ahsoka decided to move was the fact that Maul blocked a blaster bolt coming right for her and proceeded to give her a swift slap to the face.

"Are you trying to get us both killed???" He seethed.

"S-sorry. I just... I- this is all a lot to take in."

"Well get your head out of your ass or you'll end up like the rest of these imbeciles," Maul said motioning to the fallen Jedi around them. Ahsoka immediately closed her mouth and nodded. The duo made their way down the Temple halls.

As they went further into the Temple, the dark presence they had first felt after exiting hyperspace grew. It kept growing until it was almost like a blanket smothering them. They passed a hallway that felt familiar to Ahsoka, but she couldn't place it. The source of the dark presence was also up above where the familiar feeling was emanating.

Ahsoka skidded to a stop. "This way," she said motioning to Maul.

"I think we should keep going this way," Maul countered pointing in the opposite direction.

Ahsoka stood with her hands on her hips. "This is my home and my master that we're talking about, and the force is telling me to go this way."

Maul sighed. "Very well Lady Tano, we shall follow what the force is 'telling' you."

Ahsoka took off down the corridor, until she figured out where the familiar feeling was emanating from. She stopped and stood in front of a door, but not just any door. Her door. This was the door to the room her and Anakin shared when she was still part of the Order. She gently placed her hand on the door and slid it open via the force. When she entered, something felt off. Normally this felt like a safe place for her, but now, now it had the feeling of almost a prison cell.

The force was telling her to open the door to her room. She hesitantly walked over to it, and slid it open. Once it was fully opened, and she stepped in, she could see that it was the exact same way she had left it, but with one difference. On the desk in her room, instead of the normal textbooks or mission statements that occupied the space, there was a picture frame with a picture of her and Anakin in it. There were two things next to the photo. One was a glass case with her padawan beads in it, the other a note. Ahsoka picked up the note and opened it:

Dear Ahsoka,
I'm sorry. Sorry for everything. Sorry it took till it was too late to prove your innocence. I understand your decision to leave, I really do, but I really wish you would have stayed. I need you Ahsoka, more than I care to admit. I've been having these dreams, dreams of Padme dying. I don't want to believe that they could be true, but the last time this happened, my mom died. I need you Ahsoka, I don't know who to turn to. Obi-Wan would just shake it off and say they're dreams, you're really the only one I can turn to. I just wish you were here.

As Ahsoka read the letter, she felt tears begin to fall from her face. She wiped them away and stuffed the letter into her pocket. She also grabbed her silka beads from their case and fastened them to her headpiece. Lastly, before she left, she grabbed the picture of her and Anakin out of the frame, rolled it up neatly, and placed it in her other pocket. She took one last look at her room before exiting.

"What was that all about?" Maul asked.

"Oh... nothing. Just something I had to take care of," Ahsoka replied. Maul decided not to press further, as frankly, he didn't care. The two made their way out of the room, but when they exited, they were met by a hooded figure. Maul and Ahsoka stopped, and the figure lowered his hood. Ahsoka gasped, and Maul activated his lightsaber.

"It was foretold that you would be here Ahsoka," Anakin said. Though it wasn't his voice, it was more monotone and felt almost forced.

"Anakin... what-what's happened to you?" Ahsoka asked choking back tears.

"What's happened to me? I've become more powerful than any Jedi could ever hope to be!"

"Anakin this isn't you!"

"Isn't it?" Anakin chuckled. "I feel more like myself than I ever have!"

"Master, please, stop, come back!" Ahsoka was on the verge of tears at this point.

"We need not be adversaries, Ahsoka. Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy." Anakin reached out his hand for Ahsoka to take. Ahsoka had a flashback to just a few hours earlier when Maul had offered her his hand. This time, however, she didn't hesitate.

"No, you're going down a path that I cannot follow." Ahsoka took a step back and activated both of her sabers.

Anakin sighed. "Very well then," he said activating his own sabers.

"Finally!" Maul said excitedly and jumped at Anakin. Anakin easily parried and sent a kick to Maul's midsection, sending him backwards. While Anakin was focused on Maul, Ahsoka ran at him and struck at his arm, she didn't want to hurt him too bad, so she aimed for a less important place. However, Anakin had anticipated her attack, and easily blocked.

Anakin took his chance and went on the offensive, beginning to push Ahsoka back. It took all of Ahsoka's strength and focus to block each of Anakin's strikes. It seemed as though he had grown exponentially more powerful since the last time they had sparred. Ahsoka kept holding on, waiting, hoping for Maul to get back up and help her out.

Thankfully, her prayer was answered as Maul came from out of nowhere and jabbed his saber towards Anakin's stomach. Anakin narrowly dodged the attack, and used the force to send Ahsoka into a wall as he turned his focus back to Maul.

Ahsoka say there on the floor clutching her head and waiting for her vision to clear. When it finally did, she saw Maul jump and spin towards Anakin, sending a strike towards his midsection, which Anakin easily blocked. Maul then swung at his legs, which Anakin again blocked. Maul went to raise his saber, but Anakin was ready. He swung down, through Mauls hilt, and subsequently through his midsection. Maul was frozen in place for a second before falling to the ground in a heap. Anakin deactivated his lightsaber and turned to Ahsoka.

"It would be wise of you to leave now before I change my mind."

Ahsoka staggered her feet. "I won't leave you... not this time." The two stood there facing each other for a second. Neither making a move or saying anything.

Anakin finally broke the silence. "Then you will die," he said activating his saber and lunging at Ahsoka.

From what Ahsoka had gathered so far was that while Anakin's strikes were more powerful, they were less precise and more clumsy. She had began to see a pattern. He would jab towards the stomach, come up to the head, then sweep at the legs. He repeated this cycle a few more times and Ahsoka fell into a rhythm. The next time Anakin went for her feet, she was ready. She blocked with one of her sabers and swung at Anakin's mechanical hand with the other. This caught Anakin by surprise and he had no time to block the attack as Ahsoka cut his mechanical hand clean off. She used his moment of shock to force him back into a pillar.

"Anakin, you don't have to do this! Come back to the light and we can stop Sidious and finally bring peace to the galaxy!" Now it was Ahsoka's turn to offer her hand. Anakin looked at it for a moment, contemplating his decision. However, he never got the chance to respond, as a group of clones rounded the corner and spotted the two.

"Look!" One of the shouted. "Jedi!" The clones started to open fire on Ahsoka and she turned her focus away from Anakin and began to deflect their blaster bolts. Anakin took this moment to get up and stealthily make his way over to the protection of the clones. Ahsoka was getting backed up, and was running out of room. She looked back and saw an air duct. She used one hand to pull the cover off of it, while the other remained holding her saber and blocking blaster bolts. Finally, once the cover came off, she quickly dove inside and crawled away quickly.

The clones came to the entrance, but none of them could fit inside. "What should we do sir?" One asked Anakin.

"Let her go," was his response. "She's no threat to us. She's not even a Jedi."
