Always There Part 4(Rey)

"Go ahead," Rey murmured to BB8. BB8 projected a map over their heads. Sam swore angrily. Rey stared at her, shocked. Sam stalked off the bridge. Rey looked at Han, who sighed. "This map's not complete. It's just a piece."

"That doesn't explain what's gotten into her," Finn said.

"Ever since Luke disappeared, people have been looking for him. Some practically their whole lives."

"Why'd he leave," Rey asked.

"He was training a new generation of Jedi. One boy, an apprentice, turned against him, destroyed it all. Luke felt responsible. He walked away from everything."

"Do you know what happened to him," Finn asked.

"There are a lot of rumors. Stories. The people who knew him best say that he went looking for the first Jedi Temple."

"The Jedi were real," Rey asked, still not quite believing it.

"I used to wonder about that myself. Thought it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo, a magical power, holding together good and evil, the dark side and the light. Crazy thing is, it's true. The Force, the Jedi, all of it. It's all true." An alarm rang, and Han messed with a couple of the switches. Finn stared at Han.

"What does any of that have to do with Sam," he asked. Han looked at Finn.

"Sam was little when it happened, about three years old, but her memory goes back a long way." Finn scowled and rolled his eyes.

"What does that mean?" Sam walked onto the bridge right after Finn asked the question. Her eyes were red from crying. Han glared at Finn, giving him a silent order to keep his mouth shut. He smiled at Sam, and she walked over to him. Han opened his arms, and Sam rested her forehead on his chest, letting Han hug her.

"Hey, kid," he said. "Are you doing okay?"

"How much did you tell them," Sam asked.

"Enough to answer some of their questions. I left the important stuff for you to tell them."

"Thanks," Sam mumbled.

"Don't mention it." Han let go of Sam, patting her on the shoulder. Sam turned to Rey and Finn.

"Sorry about that, guys," she said. "I really thought...." Sam sighed. "I hoped for so long.... And to see the map incomplete.... It was disappointing." She shook her head and laughed. Rey frowned at her, worried.

"Sam--" Then they were exiting hyperspace.

"You want my help, your getting it," Han said. "Gonna see an old friend. She'll get your droid home. This is our stop." Han and Sam piloted the ship. Rey and Finn stared out the window with BB8. Rey was speechless.

"I didn't know there was this much green in the whole galaxy," she murmured. Han and Sam flew over the green hills and landed in a hidden clearing. They landed safely, no trouble. Rey walked out of the Falcon. Sam followed Han, and Finn followed Sam.

"Hey, Solo," Finn said. "I'm not sure what we're walking into here--" Sam stiffened. Han looked at Finn.

"Did you just call me Solo?" Finn rolled his eyes.

"Sorry. Han. Mr. Solo. You should know, I'm a big deal with the Resistance. Which puts a real target on my back. Do you know if there are any conspirators here? First Order sympathizers?" Han stared at Finn.

"Listen, Big Deal, you've got another problem. Women always find out the truth." Han placed a blaster in Finn's hand. "Always." Han left the Falcon. Sam walked up to Finn.

"You know, I already know the truth," she said. Finn stared at her. "Now, can I please have my blaster back?" Finn glared at Sam.

"You cannot tell Rey," he said. Sam blinked innocently at him.

"Tell her what?"

"That I used to be a stormtrooper!" Sam's eyes widened. In a few seconds, Finn was against the wall, Sam's blaster pressed against his chest, and her face inches away from his.

"You filthy traitor," she snarled. Finn gasped. "We trusted you! Well, Rey trusted you. I never liked you, and I knew you were lying to us, but this is far worse. How could you do that to us?"

"Whoa, hold on. I thought you said you knew the truth."

"I thought the truth was that you're not in the Resistance."

"No. The truth is, I left the First Order because what they were doing was wrong. I need to get away from them as soon as possible." Sam nodded, and let Finn go, tucking the blaster into her belt.

"I do have one question," Sam said.

"Okay. Ask it."

"What were you going to do once Rey and I took you to the Resistance base?"

"I would have taken a ship somewhere safe." Sam nodded.

"I see," she said. Sam walked toward the door.

"I'm sorry," Finn said. Sam paused, placing a hand on the doorframe.

"Finn...." Sam sighed, and looked over her shoulder. "When we get to the Resistance base, stick around. Make things better. Don't abandon us." Then she left. Finn sighed unhappily.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

*Time Skip*

Sam, Han, Rey, Finn, and BB8 settled down with Maz Kanata at a table in the back of her bar. "A map to Skywalker himself," she said.

"An incomplete map," Sam muttered.

"You two are right back in the mess," Maz told Han.

"I need you to take this droid to Leia," Han said. Maz thought about it.

"No," she said. "You've been running away from this fight for too long. Han, nyakee nago wadda. Go home!"

"Leia doesn't want to see me."

"Please," Finn begged. "We came for your help."

"What fight," Rey asked.

"The only fight," Maz answered. "Against the dark side. Through the ages, I've seen evil take many forms. The Sith. The Empire. Today, it is the First Order. Their shadow is spreading across the galaxy. We must face them. Fight them. All of us."

"There is no fight against the First Order," Finn said. "Not one we can win."

"Finn, stop," Sam said.

"Look around. There's no chance we haven't been recognized already."

"Finn--"

"I bet you the First Order is on their way right--"

"Finn, will you just shut up?" Sam's hands were clenched into fists. She was trembling with rage. Rey placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Calm down," she begged Sam. Sam looked at Rey's hand, and she sat down. Maz was adjusting her glasses so that her eyes looked huge. She began to crawl across the table toward Finn.

"What's this? What are you doing," Finn asked. Maz ignored him, and continued to move toward Finn. "Solo, what is she doing?" Han shrugged.

"I don't know, but it ain't good."

"If you live long enough, you start to see the same eyes in different people," Maz said. "I'm looking into the eyes of a man who wants to run." Finn stared at Maz.

"You don't know a thing about me. Where I'm from. What I've seen." Sam looked at the table. "You don't know the First Order like I do. They'll slaughter us all. We all need to run." Maz crawled back to her chair. She pointed to two aliens sitting at a table near a door.

"You see those two," she asked. "They'll trade work for transportation to the Outer Rim. There, you can disappear." Finn looked at the men. He nodded, and stood up. Rey stared at him.

"Finn," she said.

"Come with me," he offered Rey.

"What about BB8? We're not done yet, we have to get him back to your base." Sam looked Finn in the eye, and he looked back at her. Neither of them spoke, but Sam's message to him was clear. Stay. Don't leave, help us fight.

"I can't," Finn said to both girls. He stood up, and offered his blaster to Han. Han lifted his hand.

"Keep it," he said. Sam looked at Han, tears in her eyes. Finn nodded, and walked away. Rey followed him.

"Who's the girl," Maz asked, turning her glasses back to normal.

"She's the most amazing girl in the galaxy," Sam said. Maz stared at Sam, pity in her eyes.

"Love is hard, especially when you see the one you love falling for another," she said. Maz took Sam's hand. "Child, I know this is all very hard for you--" Sam pulled her hand away from Maz.

"It's not very hard. It's the worst thing." Sam let out a shuddering breath. Sam watched Rey run off. She looked at Finn, who was leaving the bar. Sam stood up, and ran to Finn. Just as he was about to leave, she took his hand and stopped him. Finn tugged his hand.

"Let go, Sam. I have to leave."

"Don't go," Sam whispered.

"My mind is made up. I have to leave. I'm sorry--" Sam slapped Finn, letting go of his hand.

"Fine," she said. "Leave. Rey and I would be better off if you didn't exist." Finn stared at Sam.

"Listen--"

"No! You listen to me. Rey loved you, she trusted you." Sam glared at Finn, tears in her eyes. "We both trusted you to help us. I thought you had the decency to finish what you had started, to help us get BB8 to safety. I didn't think you would abandon us."

"What is your deal," Finn asked. "You stuck with Rey, even though you clearly hate Jakku, you say you don't like me, then you say that you trusted me. You begged me not to leave, you told me to make things better, you threw a tantrum when the map was incomplete-- what is with you? Why are you doing all of this?" Sam just glared at him, tears streaming down her face. "I don't understand what's going on. Please Sam, I need you to help me understand." Sam looked at the ground.

"When I was three years old, my best friend, my cousin burned my home to the ground. Then he left. A few months later, I woke up one morning, and my father was gone. He didn't leave a note saying where he was going, he didn't say anything. He just abandoned us. Mom and I, we searched the galaxy for him. When we learned there was a map on Jakku.... We tried to go there. We crashed our ship. We went into town to get help, but Mom got sick, and died a few months later. Han and Leia had separated, Leia running the Resistance and Han.... Han flew his ship around the galaxy, getting into trouble. He checked in once or twice, but I didn't hear anything else from him. I felt like everyone I loved had abandoned me. Then I found Rey." Sam looked up at Finn and smiled. The tears were still streaming down her face, but she laughed. "We were five years old. Her parents had left her. I took her in, I taught her how to survive, I made her strong. We stuck together for years, then.... Then I fell in love with her. Rey.... She's the most amazing woman in the entire galaxy. When I saw that she loved you..... I thought to myself, he is one lucky...guy." Sam laughed again. "Rey was the only person I could trust on that planet, and you were taking her away from me. At least, that was how I saw it. Now, you're abandoning us, too." Sam wiped her tears away. She smiled at Finn. He stared at her, shocked.

"Sam...."

"If you want to leave, I won't stop you. I guess you've never had a choice before." Finn stared at Sam. He hugged her tightly.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I have to leave. I can't risk staying here and getting caught by the First Order." Sam nodded.

"May the Force be with you," she said. Sam turned around and walked away.

"Sam," Finn said. "Tell Rey I'm sorry." Sam paused.

"I will," she said. Sam saw Rey running out of a room. She started to go toward Rey, but then BB8 caught her eye. She hurried over to him, and knelt in front of him. She opened the compartment where the map was stored.

Hey! BB8 protested. What are you doing?

"I'm taking the map, and I'm going to help the Resistance find Luke Skywalker." Sam tucked the map into her pocket, turned around, and ran to find Rey.
