Chap. 9 - The Taste of War

Icarus took several minutes to analyze the situation from the vantage point that this high plateau provided him. While Wag Too's specialty was tracking his targets, devising the most optimal strategy to defeat his opponents was the droid's raison d'être. Icarus computed the hundreds of variants to eliminate the Trandoshans without suffering casualties, as well as the hundreds of contingencies and countermeasures that could arise along the way from each strategy. All this in just a few minutes.

Taking the data from the terrain, the number of enemies, the weapons available on each side, and the possible escape routes, Ícaro managed to compute a plan that, according to his own reasoning, had at least a 50% probability of going wrong. However, it was the best he could come up with.

The Trandoshan pirates had no idea of the shadow that stalked them. And they remained playing cards and getting drunk until night came to that region of the planet. Once the darkness enveloped every corner of the mountains, only the light coming from various lamps and lanterns illuminated some areas of the shelter.

The pirates did not skimp on squandering their stocks of alcohol, and their babbling was audible from a mile away. But very different from reality, the peculiar group of criminals believed that there was no one in Mygeeto stupid enough to mess with them. Something they would soon discover would not be the case.

While many of them were enjoying the evening unaware of the danger, a strange sound caught everyone's attention. One of the metal tanks suddenly reverberated, making a loud noise that echoed through the mountain range and into the cave. Those at the entrance to the shelter stopped what they were doing and reached for their weapons almost immediately. Very cautiously, two of them began to approach the source of the noise to investigate. What they did not know was that the noise was caused by a stone thrown by Icarus himself. But when he was close enough:

The fuel tank exploded violently after receiving a powerful blaster shot. It was Wag Too, who hit with great precision right on the lid of the container.

As expected, those two closest to the target were killed instantly, leaving three others with minor burns and superficial injuries. The commotion resounded in all those present, who were not able to conceive what was happening as they contemplated how the fire rose above the rest of the containers.

Quickly, three pirates ran in search of the fire extinguishers to contain the flames, while the rest pointed their weapons into the darkness trying to discover the culprit. But the darkness of the night, combined with the blinding light of the flames behind them, made the task impossible. The only accurate shot suggested that it was a sniper, and with everyone alert, they knew that firing again would reveal their position. But what they didn't expect was to see a rain of blasters shooting from a few meters.

From behind a rock formation, Icarus began to advance using the two blasters he was carrying in his hands to shoot down the Trandoshans who still couldn't understand what was happening. The combined attack had left them in shock, and those closest to them could do little to avoid their tragic end.

In less than ten seconds after the explosion, the pirates had lost eleven of their ranks, the rest hiding behind metal containers and rock formations to avoid the blaster fire that bore down on them. Scattered, confused, without knowing the number of their enemies and without an established chain of command, the pirates were at the mercy of the super tactical droid's evil plan.

Pirate 1: - What is happening? -

Pirate 2: - I don't know. It's very dark. -

Pirate 3; - How many? -

Pirate 4: - I don't know. At least twenty of them. -

Pirate 5: - We need reinforcements. Activate the alarm. -

One of the pirates scrambled to his feet and began to run into the cave, but before he could take five steps, a sniper shot slammed into the back of his skull, instantly frying his brain. The Trandoshans watched in terror as their comrade collapsed a few meters from them just for sticking his head out. Then, the one who seemed to be the leader of the advance received a call on his holo-communicator.

Pirate boss: - Can you tell what's going on out there? - He asked angrily.

Pirate: - We need help. There are many of them. He has us cornered. -

Pirate chief: - Calm down. How many? -

Pirate: - I don't know. We need help. I do not know how much... -

The pirate chief watched in horror as the holo-comm projection showed his subordinate being cut in half by a mysterious light before cutting off the call. It was Icarus who had run out of ammunition and was in close combat, brandishing Ki-Adi-mundi's saber like a riot baton.

Icarus' unforeseen events were more severe than he calculated. His optical sensors were in very poor condition and his aim had been badly affected. Once he managed to take down those who were only a few meters from him, and the rest hid behind cover, the futile exchange of fire quickly consumed what little ammunition he had. So he had no choice but to resort to his last resort: use the lightsaber even though this would expose him too much to danger.

But having foreseen the confusion of his enemies, it was not very difficult for him to approach undetected. The pirates were more attentive to the fire and the sniper than the idea of a droid approach carrying the gun, further lethality of the galaxy looked simply ridiculous. Even so, at least six pirates experienced firsthand the lethality of the lightsaber.

However, while he was taking down one of the pirates, a powerful shot hit his back plates. The shot came from another Trandoshan, who efficiently managed to slip out of his field of vision and was about five meters from the droid, pointing his rifle at him. But before the pirate could land a kill shot on any of the droid's mechanisms, a powerful shot from Wag Too's sniper tore through the reptile's skull.

Icarus had not factored it into his plan, but Lurmen's aim turned out to be supernatural. Although he had no military training, all the years spent hunting small game endowed him with exceptional qualities. Unbeknownst to the droid, Wag Too was able to take down five Trandoshans who tried to encircle Icarus. And after several seconds of calm, the lurmen descended from its observation post and met with Icarus, who was examining a reinforced metal door that prevented access to the interior of the cavern.

Wag Too: - Any problem? -

'Icaro: - They destroyed the control panel inside. Opening it in the traditional way will be impossible. -

Wag Too: - Surely they preferred to lock themselves in their refuge than expose themselves to an unknown enemy who was able to annihilate their outpost in less than five minutes. -

Icarus: - That is very likely. But he's not very smart either. -

Wag Too: - I see you have something in mind. -

Icarus: - You can say yes. But I'm sure you won't like it. -

Inside the shelter, the pirates had set up a barrier behind the doors. His desperate measures were logical, since it was preferable to face his enemies in a bottleneck and in familiar territory. The leader of the pirates, a large, stocky Trandoshan with one eye missing, carried a heavy machine gun which he aimed rather fearfully at the door.

Pirate 1: - Are you sure, sir? What you saw was a lightsaber? -

Pirate Boss: - I could recognize that thing just by hearing it. And there is no doubt, it was a jedi saber. -

Pirate 2: - But the jedi do not kill. What's going on? -

Pirate Chief: - I don't know what that thing was. But I will not die here, not today. - He said with a great fear drawn on his face.

Suddenly, the lethal end of the lightsaber ripped through the metal door like butter. The pirates within watched in terror as the mighty weapon sliced through solid iron to form a gaping opening above the door. A momentary silence filled the room, until the huge severed fragment of the metal door fell away after receiving a powerful blow from the other side.

A cloud of dust rose, allowing the pirates to see a silhouette on the other side, and at an order from their frightened leader, they all began firing their blasters with everything they had. The hail of gunfire was terrifying, and the figure above the door was taking every shot. Then the smokescreen fell slowly.

Pirate: - It's one of us! He screamed in horror.

Pirate Chief: - Cease fire! -

The Trandoshans could not believe what had happened. They fired unrestrainedly at the body of one of their own, and that peculiar sight made them collapse, on the verge of being completely shocked. But before they could react appropriately, the Trandoshan standing over the hole in the door jumped frantically at the nearest pirate.

What the pirates did not know at that moment was that the body they had shot at was already dead before their mistake. It was a strategy of Icarus, who carried the corpse to absorb all the impacts and thus sow confusion and terror in his enemies. When he was close enough, Icarus ignited his lightsaber, cutting the pirate directly in front of him in half from right shoulder to waist. The rest did not know what was happening.

Icarus pounced on three others, taking their lives before they could even raise their weapons. The only thing they could see was the corpse of one of their comrades, mutilated and torn by the rain of blasters, while a mesmerizing blue light came out of their backs. By the time they reacted again, their heads were already separated from their bodies.

One by one, the pirates were dropping like flies without even knowing what was happening in the dust and confusion. Those who were able to see what was happening from a distance were shot square in the forehead before they could raise their rifles. It was Wag too, who had stretched out on the ground and shot down his enemies with accurate aim.

The pirate chief, thinking that he was the last one still alive, began to fire wildly his powerful RT-97C heavy blaster at the strange figure that was rushing from one side to the other killing all his subordinates. Such was the frenzy of the pirate chief that he did not even care to kill those of his comrades who were still standing. Seeing so much firepower against him, Icarus decided to hide behind strong cover. And while thinking of a way to get closer if they were destroyed in the process:

A powerful blaster blew the skull off the rampaging Trandoshan. It was Wag Too, who managed to remain calm even when the blasters hit less than half a meter from where he was, managing to land a final impact on his opponent.

Wag Too: - Everything okay down there? - He said as he got up.

Icarus: -Somehow... It seems that I still keep myself in one piece. - He peeked out as he released without remorse the disfigured corpse of the Trandoshan he used as a shield.

Wag Too: - So... We won? -

Icarus: - Affirmative. My little friend. -
