Chap. 10 - The New Pegasus
The little lurmen was surprised how only two of them with fairly decent equipment could take down an entire pirate group of more than twenty members. But the most shocking thing was that everything went completely as Icarus had predicted. Well. Most of it.
From the fact that two pirates went to investigate the sound, the pirates' confusion, the lightning attack that didn't give them time to react, the rest being sealed in the shelter, using the corpse from a pirate as a shield, to the fact that the pirate chief would desperately kill his own men trying to save his own life. Icarus even gave him precise orders to when shoot and where to move. He even predicted that one of them would leave the roof to activate the alarm. The only mistake in his plan was that inside the refuge there were two more pirates than he calculated.
Only once the adrenaline left his body, Wag Too was able to think coldly about what had happened.
"What the hell. How did he do that? How could he predict Trandoshan's every move? How did he even know where to move and what target to move to?"shoot before even starting the fight? How did he know the confusion and fear would last long enough to allow us to finish them off without even giving them a chance to react? And the most important. Who or what is really Icarus? And what will be the limit of his capabilities?" Wag Too thought to himself.
Although Icarus had shared much of his personal information, as well as the fact that he was an improved experimental model, Wag Too still found it hard to believe the droid's capabilities. Even when he mentioned that the "meat shield" would cause unreasonable terror in pirates, he never thought it would be that effective. Although the truth was that even for himself it was a bit bizarre. When Icarus told him: "(...) they programmed me to manipulate the emotions of my enemies (...)" he never thought it was so extreme. Still, the lurmen's appreciation of the droid was enough to assuage the fear that just remembering the battle created in him.
Wag Too: - Did you find anything useful? - He said sticking his head out of one of the cooling ducts of the Kestrel Nova that was parked outside the lair.
Ícaro: - Nothing really important. Weapons, money, ammo, spices, fuel cells, batteries, lights, among other things. - He said approaching the ship.
Wag Too: - Is this a joke? That's some real loot. - He said in amazement.
Icarus: - It may be true But right now what we need most is information. And I didn't find anything like that. -
Wag Too: - Don't be pessimistic. Everything you mentioned could well be worth a fortune in these parts. -
Icarus: - Well. Maybe you are right. Any progress on that thing? -
Wag Too: - Hey. Don't call he a thing. He also has feelings. - Referring to the ship.
Ícaro: - What you propose is... improbable. -
Wag Too: - You know what? Forget it. - The lurmen sighed. - I already checked most of it. Apparently the engines are working and the hyperjump will allow us to jump two or three times. The controls respond appropriately and will maintains in one piece despite being such an old model. The only problem is that it has no shields. -
Ícaro: - ¿Cause? -
Wag Too: - The shield system is broken. Being such an old model, they probably couldn't find a functional shield module. The weapon system seems functional as it should, but I can't say anything about the assisted aiming system. As far as I'm concerned, everything else works as it should. - The lurmen jumped out of the ventilation shaft and landed a few meters from the droid.
Icarus: - Very good. We'll load everything that will fit on the ship. What is not useful to us we will sell for contraband or scrap. Credits are always useful, and besides, we have a problem. -
Icarus opened his hand, revealing some strange coins with an engraved stamp that neither of them seemed to have seen before.
Wag Too: - Are those... coins? -
Icarus: - Yes. Apparently, these are the new currency used by the empire. If true, Separatist or Republic credits are no longer valid. Using them would even be dangerous. -
Wag Too: - I guess you're right. -
The lurmen had dedicated himself to diagnosing the ship since the end of the fight, but when he saw the loot, he almost lost consciousness. As the droid had said that the loot was not significant, he thought that it was just some weapon and some parts, but the truth was that there were at least two caverns of two hundred square meters each full of resources and weapons. Still, Icarus did not make them the smaller case. Well, for their military objectives, only a handful of weapons were enough, after all, it was only two of them.
Icarus led the lurmen to the bottom of one of the caverns. A dark place with cobwebs everywhere. Evidently a landfill or something similar. But what he found left Wag Too in shock.
Wag Too: - They are... They are... Battle droid. - He said when he saw a pile of Separatist droid parts and pieces accumulated in a corner of the cavern.
Icarus: - Do you think you can repair them? -
Wag Too: - I don't know. I need time to review the parts But...Are you sure? Won't they turn against us or something? -
Icarus: - Not as long as you don't turn them on before I reprogram them. - The lurmen swallowed dry. - I have your matrix codes in my database. Reprogramming them will not be complicated. -
Wag Too: - If you say so. But I will need some time. -
Icarus: - Very good. I'll take everything useful to the ship. Separate the pieces that you think you can use. -
A couple of hours passed as Icarus hauled the crates of ammunition and supplies he could carry onto the ship, and Wag Too pored over the droid fragments with the aid of a flashlight. They were both so focused on their tasks, they hardly noticed that it was already noon. Finally, Icarus transported the last cargo that he considered of value to the ship.
The Krestel Nova was huge, and its cargo hold was just as big. It took Icarus at least eight Earth hours to get everything into place, considering the droid wasn't suffering from fatigue or needing to stop to eat or go to the bathroom. Still, he knew that Wag Too didn't have the same advantages, so he hurried over to see his companion carrying two emergency rations and a canteen with an energy drink that were stored in the pirate supplies.
The image that Icarus found was not very pleasant. Though there were hundreds of droid pieces separated and organized, the lurmen's countenance showed great exhaustion. He had big dark circles under his eyes, as if they had passed ten years in just a few hours. In addition, he was covered in oil and machine fluid from head to toe.
Wag Too: - I already separated all the pieces that seem to be useful. but unfortunately onlyI will be able to weapon five droids. There are many useful parts, but we only have five good cores. The rest is just junk. -
Icarus: - Right now the least I care about are the droids. You look exhausted. Take. Eat something and rest. I take care of taking everything to the ship. -
Icarus gave the lurmen the rations and the drink and began to carry the pieces to an empty space on the ship while Wag Too sat on a box to recover his forces. On the first trip, Icarus saw Wag Too devouring his first ration. In the second, he enjoyed the second ration patiently. On the third, he drank the energizing sip by sip. And in the fourth, the lurmen had fallen asleep on the metal container.
Icarus let him sleep until he moved each of the droid pieces. Finally, he took the lurmen in his metal arms and laid him down on the Krestel Nova's medical bay and prepared to leave.
The huge ship started its engines, making a deafening noise, but not enough to wake Wag Too. Icarus checked each panel, and everything seemed stable. Finally, the droid got off the ship, carrying a blaster in one of its arms. He looked carefully at the pirate shelter, and with a shot, he set fire to a pool of fuel outside. The fire spread through the area and deep inside the shelter, hitting a perfectly placed fuel barrel to blow up the entire place.
The droid hurried to the command post, using the terminal to pilot the massive hulk by himself. Usually, a ship this large would have to be manned by five individuals at a time, but Icarus had full control of all systems. The biggest problem was that it consumed a lot of energy from his reserves. In a flight of more than five rotations, Icarus could lose up to 80% of his energy. Hence the need to have droids to pilot the ship on their own.
When the Krestel Nova got far enough away, a violent explosion rocked the ground, causing the vault entrance to collapse abruptly. Inside, hundreds of weapons and ammunition supported the explosion, burning and tearing every piece of metal, and hundreds of kilograms of spices that Icarus left behind, since he did not consider them useful.
The droid made a temporary thirty-minute stop at Wag Too's old shelter, taking all his belongings and arranging them in a locker in the med bay. The lurmen was so tired that not even the sound of metal colliding with each other could wake it up or stop its loud snoring.
With everything in place, Icarus was ready to leave the atmosphere of Mygeeto.
"Stabilizers... Ready... Propulsion... Online and stable. Navigation system... Online... Warning. Possible structural damage when leaving the atmosphere due to lack of shields. Calculated damage... 2%." It said the flight system of the Krestel Nova.
The huge ship raised its nose and sliced through the planet's atmosphere like a knife. It was wobbly a bit though, but nothing serious. And after several seconds of tension. icarus returned to furrow the vast confines of the universe.
