24| The Force That Binds Us
Meanwhile, on Naboo, the Resistance had gathered at the Queen's table. Leia filled her in about the First Order, and the Resistance. She told her how their numbers had been decreased. But she didn't tell her that her son was a part of the First Order.
The queen listened to their tale with sympathy. "I want to help you," she said. "Tomorrow we will have a meeting. Maybe I can convince the people to join your cause."
"Thank you," said Leia.
While Leia and the queen discussed politics and war, Rey, Finn, Rose, Poe, and Kaydel were having a conversation of their own.
Rey was trying everything on the table. There were so many delicious foods. They were far better than the portions she had eaten her whole life on Jakku. She continued to eat long after she was full, wanting to taste everything. The best by far was the cake. She had heard that cake was good and had always wanted to taste some. It was far more delicious than she had ever imagined it could be.
As she ate the others asked her a lot of questions. They all wanted to know what had happened to her on Ahch-to.
Finn had asked her what the planet was like and she began to describe the islands of Ahch-to.
"There was a beautiful ocean that went out as far as the eye could see, and the rocky islands were covered in green grass," she said. "When I came to one of the islands, I saw Luke Skywalker standing there, looking out at the waves."
"You met Luke Skywalker!" Rose exclaimed. As a child she had always enjoyed hearing stories about him.
"Yes," Rey answered.
"What was he like?" Rose asked, excitedly.
"At first he seemed like a strange old hermit, but I knew he was really a Jedi Master," Rey replied.
"Master Luke, a strange old hermit?" C3PO asked. "I seem to remember Luke saying that about Old Ben Kenobi. I never thought he would become one himself."
"Old Ben Kenobi?" Rey asked, puzzled. She wondered if Ben Solo was named after him, but she didn't ask. She didn't want to bring Ben up, she knew if she did she would have to explain.
"I've heard legends of an Obi Wan Kenobi. I wonder if they're related," Rose thought aloud.
"Actually, they're the same person," C3PO answered.
"Really?" Rey asked.
"Yes," C3PO replied. "He trained master Luke to be a Jedi."
"Did Luke Skywalker train you to be a Jedi, Rey?" Kaydel asked.
"I begged him to train me, but he refused at first," said Rey. "Finally, he agreed to teach me three things about being a Jedi."
"Then what happened?" Poe asked.
"He gave me my first lesson. He instructed me to sit on a large rock with my legs crossed. Then he told me to close my eyes and reach out," said Rey. "So I closed my eyes and stretched out my hand."
"Did you feel anything?" Finn asked, amazed.
"I felt something brushing against my hand," Rey answered.
"Really?" Finn asked in both disbelief and astonishment. "Was it the Force?"
Rey opened her mouth to reply, but Finn continued before she could. "Let me try."
"Okay," said Rey, trying not to smile. "Close your eyes."
Finn closed his eyes.
"Now reach out."
Finn stretched his hand out in front of him.
Rey took a long piece of grass and brushed it across Finn's hand.
"I feel something!" he exclaimed, in surprise.
Poe and Rose had to cover their mouths to keep from laughing out loud.
"I never felt anything like it," he said. "It feels... strange. Is it the Force?"
Rey slapped his hand with the piece of grass.
"Ow!" Finn exclaimed, opening his eyes.
Poe, Kaydel and Rose bursted out laughing. Rey joined them.
Finn rubbed his hand. He noticed the piece of grass in Rey's hand. He gasped. "Did you just...?" he began, pointing at the blade of grass.
"Sorry," Rey interrupted.
Poe, Kaydel and Rose were still laughing.
"Yeah, real funny you guys," he said.
"Did Luke do that to you?" Poe asked, between chuckles.
"Yes, I felt something slap my hand," Rey continued. "I opened my eyes to see Luke standing in front of me with a piece of grass. I realized that he had been brushing my hand with the grass. And then he hit me with it."
"Yeah, and it hurts too!" said Finn.
Poe tried to contain his laughter, but failed.
"That sounds like the Master Luke I knew," said C3PO, shaking his head.
"Uncle Luke did stuff like that to me, all the time," said a deep voice.
She recognized the voice, it was Ben. Rey looked around, but no one else seemed to hear the voice. So she tried to ignore it, she wondered if she had imagined the voice.
"Now I know who to blame," said Finn.
"It sounds like he taught you a lot more than just how to use the Force," said Poe. "I'll have to remember this," he added, intending to pull this as a prank on one of his fellow pilots.
"Yes, he did. I realized too late that he meant for me to reach out with my feelings," Rey went on. "So I closed my eyes again and reached out with my feelings." She touched her heart. "From here."
Just then Rey looked up and saw Ben standing across the table from her. She stared at him for long moment, and he stared back at her.
The others looked at her, wondering why she had suddenly fallen silent. Finn looked in the direction she was staring, but saw nothing.
"Rey?" he asked. But she couldn't hear him, the world around her seemed to become silent when she and Ben had their Force connections.
Finn tapped Rey's shoulder and she turned to look at him. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yes," she answered.
"Did you feel anything?" Rose asked, and Rey suddenly remembered what they had been talking about.
"No," Rey answered. "But I saw something."
"What did you see?" Poe asked, a little puzzled.
"The island," she answered.
"The island?" Finn asked.
"Like the island you imagined?" Ben asked, surprised. "The one I saw when I was looking for the map?"
"Yes," Rey said, answering both of their questions at the same time. "I could see the whole island. The life, the death. The light and the darkness." Rey looked back at Ben. "And between it all, balance, and a Force that bound it all together."
And Ben knew that she was talking to him. He tried to push out the light, but he could feel it pulling him. He always felt it, but it was even stronger when she was around.
"Like it bonds us together," She told him through the Force, so that only he could hear it.
Ben gave her a small smile, then he looked down, he seemed a little sad.
"Ben?" Rey whispered, and he looked up at her. He looked into her eyes and saw the compassion in them. Compassion he felt he didn't deserve.
Finn shook her shoulder, "Rey."
"Yes?" she asked, still staring at Ben.
"Who are you talking to?" Finn asked. "Who's Ben?"
"Ben?" Rey asked, turning towards Finn, but he could tell that her focus still wasn't there.
"You were staring off at nothing, then you whispered 'Ben,'" Finn replied.
Rey looked back at Ben, she needed to talk to him alone. "I have to go," she said, standing up. Then she left the palace.
"Is she okay?" Poe asked, pointing at Rey as she walked away.
"I don't know," Finn replied. "Who do you think this Ben is?" he asked the others, hoping that it wasn't Kylo Ren. He had heard Han Solo call him Ben.
"Maybe it's old Ben Kenobi," C3PO suggested. He knew that Luke had seen the Force ghost of his old master.
"Maybe she was having a vision in the Force," Rose added, remembering how Rey had said she had seen the whole island through the Force.
Finn relaxed a little, maybe Rey was just having a vision of Old Ben Kenobi, he hoped that was all it was. "If the Force makes you have visions in the middle of your meal, I'm glad I don't have it," Finn answered.
Poe nodded.
