20| The Kyber Crystal
Meanwhile, aboard the First Order ship, Kylo sat alone in his room. He was thinking about Rey. Being around her was like seeing a beautiful sunrise after a dark night. Like the first day of spring after a long, cold winter.
He reached into his pocket pulled out half of the kyber crystal from his grandfather's lightsaber. He had picked it up in the throne room after Rey left. The rest of the lightsaber was missing, Rey must have taken it with her.
He felt like his heart had been as broken as the lightsaber, and that Rey had also taken half of it with her when she left.
Kylo looked at the broken kyber crystal. He wondered if he could use it to make a new lightsaber. He was sure he could, his own lightsaber was made of a cracked kyber crystal. He liked the one he had, but it couldn't hurt to have two. Besides it would be made with half of the crystal from his grandfather's lightsaber.
His Uncle Luke had given the lightsaber when he came to train with him. He had passed it down to him, believing that as a Skywalker, he would one day bring balance to the Force as he had done, and as his father before him. But the task had always seemed impossible to Ben. How could he bring balance to the Force? Even if he did, would it last? It hadn't before, so why would it now? And he didn't believe he could do it alone. Luke hadn't. He had done it with the help of his father.
But it didn't take long for the Dark Side to rise again, and the Force to be thrown out of balance once more.
Snoke had spoken to him, saying that Luke had used the Light Side to bring balance. But it didn't last. Ben had felt that to truly bring balance to the Force he had to join the Dark Side. But even when he turned to the Dark Side, he felt the pull to The Light.
He had equal potential for the Light Side and the Dark Side. But how could he be both? How could he truly bring balance. He didn't even know what balance was. He certainly didn't have it, the Light and Dark Side battled within him, tearing him apart just like how he and Rey had torn the lightsaber in half.
This wasn't his task, it was his grandfather's.
He looked down at the kyber crystal in his hand. He had lost the lightsaber when he left his Uncle and turned to the Dark Side. He felt like he had lost a part of himself when he lost the lightsaber. He felt like he had lost the part of him that was good. He had lost Ben Solo.
Now he had the lightsaber's crystal. Or part of it, at least.
And he felt as if he had part of himself back too. But it wasn't the lightsaber that had brought it back, it was Rey. And that's why he would give the lightsaber to her.
He had a lightsaber, she didn't. The lightsaber had called to her after all. He wanted to keep it, but he felt like she was meant to have it. He was willing to give up the lightsaber for her. It wasn't the lightsaber he wanted when they fought over it with the Force in the throne room. He would have let her have it then, but he knew that if he did, she would have left, and he didn't want her to leave him. He wanted her to stay and rule the galaxy with him.
Or if he let her have the saber, she may have used it against him, and he would've had to fight her. He knew that he wasn't strong enough to do that, not after he had gotten to know her. He had killed Snoke, his master to save her. He had risked his life to save her, and he hadn't done so just so he kill her. He didn't want to fight her. He couldn't hurt her, and he certainly couldn't kill her. He wanted her to join him, so that neither of them would have to be alone ever again.
You are weak, you couldn't even kill a girl, a voice told him.
But he looked at the crystal, he didn't regret saving her. No, he thought in reply to the voice. I don't regret my decision. I don't regret sparing her.
It was a foolish sentimental decision, the voice answered in his mind. You have failed your grandfather. If she won't join you, then she is against you.
She just needs time, he replied. I can turn her to the Dark Side. She has compassion for me, and that will be her undoing.
You are right, she does have compassion for you, the voice replied. But you also have compassion for her, don't let it lead to your undoing. If she will not join you, if she will not turn to the Dark Side, then she is against you and you must destroy her. Don't let her stand in the way of you finishing what your grandfather started.
I would never let anyone stand between me and that goal, Kylo answered.
He had listened to the voice, and even believed what it said. But despite what it had said, he began working on the lightsaber. He had to make things right between himself and Rey. She had risked everything for him. The least he could do was give her a new lightsaber to replace the one he had broken. Perhaps if he made amends with Rey, she would join him.
He thought about what kind of lightsaber Rey would like. He didn't want to make just any lightsaber for Rey, he wanted to make a special one. A unique one. He liked one-of-a kind lightsabers. As a boy had spent some of his free time drawing designs for unique lightsabers. His own was very unique. But Rey was special and deserved a very special lightsaber of her own. But what kind?
He remembered seeing her in his dreams with a long staff. She had fought well with it. He decided to make a lightsaber that was similar to it. A double sided lightsaber. He had never seen one before, but he had heard that a Sith Lord, Darth Maul had once wielded one. He was sure he could make one. But he didn't want it to be exactly like Darth Maul's. He wanted it to be special, one-of-a-kind, like Rey. He had a few special modifications in mind, that he hoped she would like.
He began working on the lightsaber. He made two hilts that were average length, around the same length as his grandfather's had been. They could be connected to form one long hilt that was a little longer than his own, but a little shorter than Darth Maul's.
He carefully broke piece kyber crystal in half, using the Force to split it. He knew that as the crystal was split, it would combust. So he used the Force to create a small shield around the crystal to contain the blast. When the blast settled, he carefully grabbed the crystal, which was split perfectly in two.
He heaved a sigh of relief. He had been worried that he would accidentally break the crystal into a hundred tiny pieces, but just as he had hoped it broke in half. He placed each half of the crystal into each of the hilts. He made the lightsaber so it could be used as two lightsabers, or as one long double sided one. When he was finished, he examined the new lightsaber. He hoped Rey would like it.
As he looked at the lightsaber, he also realized that it would be a dangerous weapon. He wasn't sure if wanted to face anyone who wielded it. A double sided lightsaber was a dangerous weapon, as was having two lightsabers. If he gave this lightsaber to Rey, she could have either. And her skills with both the staff and the lightsaber would mean that she would wield it well.
He knew that if he couldn't turn Rey to the Dark Side, he might have to face her one day. He realized that it was his worst nightmare. Not because he was afraid of Rey, even though he had been when first met her, but not anymore. He feared facing her because he didn't want to be forced into hurting hurt her. He cared about her. She had become his weakness.
He hoped his grandfather wouldn't be disappointed in him for giving his lightsaber away. For caring about someone. He feared his grandfather would see his compassion for Rey as a weakness, as Snoke had. He knew that he must find a way to overcome his weaknesses, if he were to become like his grandfather.
Grandfather didn't have any weaknesses, he thought silently. He wouldn't have been afraid of losing someone, the way I am afraid of losing Rey. He had finally admitted it himself, the truth he had tried so hard to hide. He was afraid of losing Rey.
He remembered what Snoke had said in his nightmare. "I can see you are still weak, my apprentice. Darth Vader never would have wept, as you do. Least of all for the sake of a girl."
Snoke was right, I am weak, he thought. Darth Vader, my grandfather never would have been afraid to lose someone. And he certainly wouldn't have wept, especially because of a girl.
He was sure his grandfather would be disappointed in him for using his lightsaber to make a weapon for his enemy. And for being afraid to face a girl, because he had begun to care about her.
"I hope you aren't too disappointed in me, grandfather," he said out loud.
Of course he's disappointed in you, the voice said in his head again.
Of course he's disappointed in me, Ben thought. What reason would he have not to be?
"I could never be disappointed in you for this," said a second voice. But unlike the first, he heard this one with his ears instead of in his mind. "Don't make the same mistakes I did."
"Who said that?" Kylo asked, surprised by the audible voice. It was the same voice he had heard before when he was holding Darth Vader's helmet.
But again, there was no reply.
Kylo listened carefully, but heard only silence. He was sure he had heard a voice. But perhaps it was only his imagination. Perhaps he longed for his grandfather's approval so much that he had imagined him saying that he was proud of him. But he knew that couldn't be true. He knew he had failed his grandfather. He knew he needed to find a way to get rid of his weaknesses, starting with Rey. He would give her a second chance, but if she would not join him, then he would destroy her.
