Chapter 10: The Battle of Gorem
"General Organa, what do you want us to do? Board the Millennium Falcon?" An anxious Resistance fighter asked.
"Yes, we'll try to leave while we still can."
"It's too late!" Poe entered the room, shaking his head. "It's too late. Four Star Destroyers are hovering in the distance, heading in this direction."
The room went silent. Leia looked at the ground, searching for words. Poe found them for her. "We'll fight."
"Yes. Finn, take three Resistance fighters to man the four guns outside the hangar. Chewie, go with him. Poe, move the Millennium Falcon into the innermost corner of the hangar. The rest of the Resistance, make sure the remaining TIE fighters are fueled. Poe will be your leader. Our goal is diversion. If we can distract any TIE fighters they may send after us, we can escape in the Falcon. Those flying in the old TIE fighters can leave once you see the Falcon is off of the planet."
The Resistance scattered, heading to their posts. If we can create a diversion, escape may still be a possibility, Leia thought.
A blast shook the base. They're here.
Poe stood in the hangar's cavernous opening and stared at the sky. The four Star Destroyers he had seen earlier were in plain sight, shooting around the hangar but not directly into it. They're saving that job for the TIE fighters. They should be pounding us soon. And don't forget about the ground troops.
Poe took one last glimpse before rushing over to an Imperial TIE fighter. "Diversion is our goal! Don't get killed! If the others have time to escape in the Falcon, draw off and follow the Falcon!" Poe shouted at the group of Resistance fighters entering their TIE fighters. "And BB-8, no getting into trouble!"
Once everyone was settled, Poe led the group into the sky. A small band of First Order TIE fighters came out to meet them. "Please tell me these intercoms still work!" Poe prayed. He fiddled with some switches and got a crackling noise. "Look's like they only think it'll take a few ships to take us down. Let's prove them wrong."
On the ground, Finn spun around on the giant gun, shooting at the enemy TIE fighters. The others did the same.
Leia strode into the hangar, observing the scene before her. A scanty team of ancient TIE fighters and a couple guns were no match for the Destroyers that hung over them. There was no way the Falcon would escape.
It's over," Leia said to herself, beginning to get upset. "What was I thinking? I didn't expect them to find us this fast. Oh Luke, if only you were here to save us."
"But I am." Leia closed her eyes.
"Luke."
"Leia."
Leia opened her eyes, but didn't see anyone. "Luke?"
"I'm here, Leia, in the Force around you."
Leia gasped. A Resistance fighter went down, so far up in the air it could barely be seen by the naked eye. A swarm of TIE fighters exited each Destroyer. "I need to call this off. I can't watch."
"No," Luke's voice came back to Leia. "Use the Force. You are strong in it, like your father and your brother before you. The Force runs strong in our family. Even your son has it."
"Luke, help, please."
"Remember, I am with you always." Luke's voice disappeared.
"Luke!" Leia walked forward several steps, watching as Finn and two Resistance fighters scrambled into the hangar.
"General Organa, the gunfire is getting to be too much! Only two Imperial TIE fighters are left! That means only two of our members are left. The First Order should be releasing ground troops soon to finish the job," Finn said. He was drenched in sweat. "And the man in charge of the fourth gun was shot."
"The diversion failed. It probably only had a small chance of working anyway," Leia said. "Finn, get the Falcon ready. We may end up having to make a run for it. Again, small chance of escaping four Destroyers without a distraction."
Finn ran off with the two other Resistance members. Gunfire barraged the area in front of the hangar. Long charred holes filled the flat ground. Because of the hangar's angle in the mountain, it was hard for the enemy TIE fighters to shoot directly into the hangar. Leia breathed in, remembering Luke's words. "Hope," she whispered.
She closed her eyes, and breathed in again. She shut out the sound of TIE fighters streaking though the air, of gunfire hitting the ground. Leia breathed out. She felt the Force flowing within her. She wandered further, seeing the walls of the hangar. She went even further, daring to venture out of the hangar. Though she was still standing in the hangar, she felt the Force moving in the air around the mountains. The Force flowed around the TIE fighters as they disturbed the air around them, and then the air settled back. Leia saw Poe, the last remaining Resistance fighter, speeding back to the hangar, retreating. She felt the Force in the cockpits of the enemy fighters. She felt each individual fighter, and the dark Force inside of them.
Leia then knew what Luke was telling her to do.
Hux, standing on the bridge of the command shuttle, barked out orders. The ship was flying above Gorem in space, watching gunfire erupt in the atmosphere of Gorem below them. "All Imperial TIE fighters are destroyed, except for one that retreated," an officer called from a desk behind Hux.
"Good. The Supreme Leader wants the girl alive, so I will get her myself. Land by the hangar. There should only be enough of the Resistance to put up a small fight, if any at all. Tell the TIE fighters to cover us. I want them in the sky just in case there is any retaliation."
"Yes, sir." An officer barked several orders, and before long the command shuttle was descending into the atmosphere of Gorem.
Leia still stood in the hangar, time passing by as she concentrated. She could still see the Force flowing in the air of Gorem. She searched rapidly with the Force, reaching out with her being until she thought she had located the leader of the first squadron of TIE fighters of the First Order. The dark side was pulsing around him. Leia reached for his mind. You will order your squadron to fire on the Star Destoyers until they are destroyed. Leia planted this in his mind, and left it there to simmer. If anyone had been watching Leia, they would have seen her squinting her eyes shut, sweat dripping on her brow. Leia didn't know if her idea would work, she didn't have enough room in her mind to think about it.
Leia felt the Force shift around the First Order squadron captain. She vaguely heard him say, "All members of the Red Squadron, aim all fire on the Star Destroyers until they are completely destroyed." Before she could collapse from exhaustion, Leia moved on to the next captain, and the next, until she had gone through the same process for six of them. She shifted the Force in the air around the hanger, following it as it flowed in and around TIE fighters, which were now all steering towards the Star Destroyers.
How the captains of the TIE fighter squadrons had convinced the First Order pilots to turn on the Star Destroyers, Leia never knew. She was drained from using the Force so intently. She stood in a trance with her eyes closed, following rapid fire as bullets gracefully whistled through the air toward the Star Destroyers. What Leia didn't notice was Hux, who had just landed and was currently pointing a pistol straight at Leia, about thirty feet away outside of the hangar.
