Chapter 1: Aboard the Falcon

Thirty minutes. It had only been thirty minutes since the Millennium Falcon had left Crait, escaping Kylo Ren and the First Order. Rey was sitting by herself on a seat, observing the small group of Resistance fighters around her. Finn was conversing with Poe, happy to be able to speak with his friend again. The girl, Rose, of whom Rey had briefly heard about from Finn, was sleeping peacefully in a bunk. Leia Organa had just emerged from the cockpit. Rey and the Resistance fighters looked up to Leia as their leader and general. Leia looked the part of a general, in dark grey garments that reached to the floor, and a confident posture, and she acted the part too. Rey saw a quick look of worry disappear from the General's face as Leia called for order. Rey sat up straighter, and everyone listened up. Even Rose stirred as Leia's voice commanded attention from everyone in the room.

"My dear friends, it is with great sorrow that we are leaving Crait," Leia began, clasping her hands in front of her. "Between Crait and our other recent battles, we have lost many brave, heroic fighters, who courageously faced the First Order and gave up their lives." Leia paused, tears in her eyes. "The few of us that are left must seek shelter from the First Order and regroup. Chewie has located an Outer Rim planet, Gorem, which is found in a system not directly controlled by the First Order. It is known for its mountainous regions and caves, and that is all I know about it. I have never been there before. We will be landing there in about twenty minutes after a jump to hyperspace."

Everyone in the room nodded. Poe spoke up from one side of the room. "Thank you. General, for telling us your plan." A twinkle came into Leia's eyes but her face remained serious.

"Yes, Poe, I told you the plan to prevent any unforeseen disasters. I don't want your actions against Holdo to ever happen again!" Leia said.

"General, I was doing my best in a desparate time. Holdo left me in the dark. If I had known the plan I would never have done what I did!" Poe retorted.

Leia turned back to the cockpit. "Let's not speak ill of Holdo, she ended up sacrificing everything for us," she said. "Holdo is a hero. Without her, we wouldn't be here. We should look to her as an example." And with that, Leia left for the cockpit, her robes swishing behind her.

Rey stood up and stretched. She had gone through so much in the last few days, not to mention the last few weeks. She wandered over to some drawers to collect her few belongings to prepare for Gorem. Rey grabbed her poncho, and placed the books she had taken from Ahch-To and her broken lightsaber into a satchel. She started back to her seat and noticed Resistance fighters gathered around Finn. She approached the group to hear what Finn was saying.

"At first, it was amazing!" Finn said as Rey listened about ten feet away. "So many rich people in such a fancy and beautiful place, having a good time." Rey realized he was telling the Resistance about his experiences on Canto Bight.

Finn continued, "But then, I looked closer. Rose opened my eyes to help me see the people and things that were overlooked by the wealthy in Canto Bight. Poor, lonely children, whose only friendship is found in the animals they care for, fathiers."

Having made it across the room, Rey sat back down in her chair. Those words struck her deeply. "The lonely children - that was me," she said softly to herself. She had been alone on Jakku, until recently. Rey looked up at the Resistance on the other side of the room, congregated like a family around Finn. "Are they really my family? Or am I still just a lonely child?" Rey's thoughts were interrupted as Leia entered the room for the second time. She wandered over to Rey without disturbing Finn's group.

"Rey, are you ok?" Leia asked, startling Rey. Leia laid a hand on Rey's shoulder.

"Yes, of course." Rey replied, standing up respectfully. Leia glanced away and sighed.

"I can't stop thinking about Luke. I miss him so much," Leia said, looking back at Rey. "I've lost everything. My family is gone. Han, Ben, and now Luke. The Resistance is all I have left."

Rey stayed silent for a moment before responding. "I'm so sorry," she finally said. "But Ben is not gone. I will bring him back. There is still good in him."

"I hope so," Leia said softly, taking her hand off of Rey's shoulder. Suddenly, a shout erupted from the Falcon's cockpit.

"General Organa!" the pilot said loudly. Leia and Rey simultaneously rushed to the cockpit, while Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix told the rest of the passengers to stay back.

"I will call for more assistance if it is needed," Leia said quickly. As Leia and Rey entered the cockpit, Chewie let out a loud, "Hhrrrrraugghrr" from the co-pilots seat.

"Not piloting today Chewie?" Rey asked, noticing a man sitting in the pilot's seat.

"I like to allow our younger members to practice flying," said Leia. "They are the future of the Resistance. Now let's turn to our current problem."

Leia and Rey stood behind the pilot's chair, anxiously waiting for the pilot to speak. "General," said the pilot, a young man with dark brown hair, "we have a problem." Rey glanced out the window, taking note of the tall, snow-capped mountains and spiraling fog of the planet Gorem as it loomed in front of the cockpit's window.

"Where do we land, General?" asked the pilot. "Landing a ship shaped like this isn't easy to do in mountainous areas, much less fog."

"I can do it," Rey said all of a sudden. Leia and the pilot looked at her. "I can do it," Rey repeated. Chewie shouted an agreement. "Hrrrrrauuuuuuughrrr."

"General?" the pilot asked, waiting for Leia's decision.

"Let Rey do it," Leia said.

The pilot got out of his seat, and Rey took his place as fast as she could.

"Nice to be back in the the pilot's chair," Rey said. "Are you ready Chewie? See that flatish landing spot over there? On the side of the mountain? It's partly covered in fog, but we can land there." She had been eyeing the spot ever since she began examining the planet.

"Hrrraaaaaurghr," said Chewie.

"Let's do this," Rey said, inhaling deeply. She gripped the controller while Chewie pressed a couple buttons.

"This landing will be a little tricky. With fog, it's all about guessing," Rey said. Once she had steered the ship over the landing spot, she gently let the ship descend onto the outcrop of the mountain. Fog encompassed the ship as it got lower and lower. Rey felt a slight bump. The Falcon had landed.

"Nice work," Leia said, exhaling from nervousness after the Falcon had completely landed. "Welcome to Gorem."

Rey and Chewie stood up, following Leia and the pilot, who Rey found out was named Jem. As Rey entered the main room of the Falcon, Resistance fighters were getting ready to unboard. Poe pushed through the group and approached Leia.

"General, I could have piloted if you needed someone. I'm your best pilot!" he said.

Leia calmly looked at him and replied, "Poe, if I had needed you I would have gotten you. Rey here is also an excellent pilot. She landed the ship."

Poe looked at Rey as if he had just noticed her standing next to Leia. He stared at her, and decided Rey wasn't a person to mess with. "Yes, General Organa," he said, turning away.

Leia felt bad about letting Poe down, so she said, "Poe, please lead us off the ship and examine our surroundings. None of us have ever been to Gorem before. And I want our top concern to be our safety. I want no more lives lost." Poe met Leia's eyes and held his head a little higher.

"That should make him feel better about not piloting," said Leia. Rey nodded in agreement as Poe opened the exit and started down the ramp of the Millennium Falcon
