REY
A
deep, aching cold, bit at my bones and made me shiver from within. Soft clouds of my hot breaths puffed into the air as I breathed. I'm walking up, uneven stone steps, ready for my next lesson with Luke. As I arrive at our usual place on the island, at the giant rock formation stood a hooded figure with its back to me.
"Luke..." I say, my voice steady, as I approach.
Inches away, I reach out my palm for his shoulder. When I touch it, I immediately feel something hard, like armor.
What?
The gray skies unnaturally grew a darker black as clouds quickly raced and gathered together, blocking out any chance of light.
I turn my eyes away from the sky and to the very figure, my hand rested upon. Rotating to face me, the hooded figure jogged my memory. That mask loomed in my very nightmares.
"It is you..." His breathing apparatus echoes through my skull like stampeding banthas.
I drew a quick gasp through my mouth and fell back, landing on my tailbone sending a hot streak of pain rushing up my spine. "Ah!" A grunt left my lips as I rubbed my back.
Reopening my eyes, I now see not only one hooded man but now many. All of them stood holding long staffs and swords like they were a part of them. One stepped forward as if to harm me. He wore a disc-shaped helmet on his head that blocked him from the now pouring rain that was beating against him as he ran at me, staff aimed at my head.
I screamed and raised my hands to protect myself from the dangerous hit, but it never came. A red explosion of light erupted from his chest as Kylo Ren stabbed him through. The man dropped, his limp body lay at my feet. Terrified I look up at him, but it's no longer Ren, but Han.
He reaches out his hand to help me up. I search his brown eyes. I can see the wrinkles around them and his lips as they twitched up into a smile.
"I'm still lookin' for a co-pilot kid, don't skip out on me." He says with his gruff but usual swagger.
"I saw you, I thought you were," my words trailed off into thin air. My head pounding, my eyes brimming with tears ready to gush down my already pink cheeks, I just stood there looking at him. Taking in the sight of him, his smell his looks his voice.
Suddenly he spoke again, startling me into taking a step back.
"You thought I was dead." He deadpanned.
I nodded my head, numbly. My neck feeling like goo.
"I am, Rey." He says to me as if it were obvious, which it was. I saw him fall from Ren on the bridge after he got...
"Soon, you will be too." He said with a saddening frown on his face. Then his expression contorted to utter rage, his lips peeling back into a hideous snarl and his eyes burning a deep black.
"You let me die, Rey!" He screamed, jutting out his index finger pointing at me, but he didn't approach me.
"I'm..." I can't find the words, I don't know what to say!
A small tear became visible as it began to waver its way down from his eye to the crease of his mouth.
I blinked than in that sudden break of sight, Han was gone. He was replaced by a sad monster. Kylo Ren or Ben Solo stands before me holding his helmet in one hand and his already ignited saber in the other.
"Join me." Was all he said before my eyes opened.
* * *
I wake up in a cold, sweaty heap next to my cot. The key word is next to, as in I had to have fallen off in my sleep. My bare legs were bundled up in my cream colored sheets to where my heels are just touching the brim of the bed.
My cheeks are still tight and damp from crying for most of the nightmare, my heart still pounding with the rush of my adrenaline. Memories come back in a flash that sends my head spinning. I've had these dreams before, many times.
I haven't known the Force for that long, but I could feel something was wrong...or was going to be.
As if I've been hog-tied, I try to undo do myself from my own trap. After some small grunts here and there I finally free myself, and my legs topple to the floor with a loud creak of the cots wooden supports.
Gritting my teeth and scrunching up my eyelids from the sound I wait for Luke to come stumbling in to find me sitting on the floor on my bed in a state of havoc.
Seconds pass without the predicted intrusion.
I breathe out a cold sigh through my lips, drying them on impact and run a hand through my greasy hair. When I awoke I half expected to be back on Jakku, in my continuously swaying hammock with the sound of wind whistling over the sand dunes in my ears. The thought of home brought back a faint sick feeling at the pit of my stomach, like a rock that firmly planted itself there.
That place is no longer home, my home is wherever Luke is, I feel as if I'm constantly telling myself that.
My sweat sticks to my body like an extra layer of itchy skin. Quickly I peel off my thin shirt and underclothes and kick them to the side of my cot and run to my small in the ground basin formed from a natural spring. Taking a small cloth I begin to scrub myself down until I felt somewhat clean again.
Still cold from the wetness, I start rummaging through extra clothes in my rucksack on my bed that I packed from the Millennium Falcon, including an old musty blue vest I found in Han's quarters.
A small knock sounded off on the wooden door that sealed off my room from the rest of the islands townhouses.
"Yes?" I instantly call out.
"Rey, I need to speak with you,"
It was Luke's timid but stern voice, "meet me in our usual place as soon as you can."
"Alright!" I call out from my place across the room by me cot.
Footsteps cracked against the gravel, I wait till they fade into the distant winds. Once Luke was gone, I wrap my fingers around the rope laced through the top of my rucksack until my knuckles flashed white and pulled tight until it closed. With it loosely thrown over my shoulder, I made my way out the door and down the beaten path.
