Chapter 5

It was their journey's second day, and the she-cats had already made sizable progress. An upcoming storm drew closer as they continued to run across the landscape. The sky was grayer than yesterday but the sun continued its bright shine. The land below was increasing in the number of hills but retained the plain-like appearance the territory behind it had. Now there was only scarce spotting of trees across the area, and the foliage had also decreased. Despite the lack of immediate shelter, there were plenty of creatures-both prey and predator-who housed themselves in dens and burrows dug out of the earth. This terrain did not halt the clanmates though, as Cloudclan was a naturally hilly place and this was a territory they knew well. The only cat who seemed at a slight disadvantage was Jaywhisper, while strong, also could not see due to an injury. This did not slow them much, as they were making good time already with their near sprinting pace. They were on a mission, and nothing was going to stop them for long. That is, except for the forces that cannot be changed or wavered.

As the sun drew on across the sky the friends slowed their pace to more of a jog, similar to their first day. But as they continued to move across the hills raindrops soon began to fall from the heavy clouds hanging overhead. The sky was now darkened with the storm that obscured the sun from clear view, though its light still shone partially on the land. When the rain fell with bigger and increasing drops the group stopped their trek. Shelter was needed or else they might catch a cold or other ailments. This was provided by an empty den of a fox. Although the scent of the vermin was partially fresh they had no other protection from the rain, as there were no trees or unoccupied homes nearby. Relieved from the downpour but still keeping their guards up, the warriors and the medicine cat rested their slightly soaked frames inside of the dry den. As the storm kept releasing its heavy tears and no signs of the fox came up, the she-cats decided to nap through the event to regain their much-needed energy.
....
When all awoke once more they were greeted by the sight of a fully grown fox who held a deadly glint in its eyes and bared its long fangs. The felines immediately stood up with their hairs raised in aggression, claws drawn and ready to attack. The standoff only lasted for a few minutes but it felt unbearably long to both parties. When the vulpine stepped forwards battle cries pierced the air as the two warriors leaped forward to attack, leaving the eyeless tabby to only guess at what was going on. Sugarfish clung onto the fox's back while Rabbitwind raked its side, leaving a scar that bled into the russet fur of their opponent. It yelped but then growled ferociously and shook itself violently in an attempt to get the warrior off of its back. This only resulted in the she-cat digging her claws deeper into its hide, accompanied by quick biting at its head and ears. Finally, the fox could bear its sharp pains no longer and ran out into the beating rain to retreat. Sugarfish had leaped off of the wounded enemy and watched carefully to make sure it didn't try to come back. Rabbitwind watched along with her companion, the pale ginger had sustained a bite to her ear and now a piece was missing, only a small amount of blood trickling out of the wound.

"What happened? Are you two alright?" Jaywhisper asked, greatly concerned as she took a hesitant step forward.

"We're fine, I've got a small piece of my ear missing but the fox was worse off. Sugarfish sure showed it!" She grinned as she mentioned their friend's accomplishment.

The cream warrior replied modestly. "Oh, please! You did most of the work!"

The blue-gray tabby gave a sigh of relief that no cat was badly hurt, though she did want to check Rabbitwind's injury soon. For now, though, they all joined in a hearty chuckle.
....
When the storm waned and dispersed to join another part of the sky all of the trio was well rested from their former nap. When the fox made no other appearance, they padded calmly out of the den. The ground was damp and soaked and dew decorated every blade of grass or leaf. The group continued on their way at a quickened pace, knowing well that the storm had cost them much time. The sun was peaking out from behind some of the lingering clouds as some of the dew that was hanging on many of the different leaves began to drop onto the ground, leaving a small pit-pat sound. The she-cats traveled with new rigor across the beautiful landscape that seemed to shine as all the dew reflected the sun's light.
