42 || Chaos

The calming stillness of the transporter room was instantly replaced by the dark and chaotic interior of the Oblivion. Alarms blared, lights flashed, and the walls around them were shaking. People were screaming and running past them in an attempt to escape.

A woman's panicked eyes locked on Captain Kirk's for a fleeting second as she screamed, crumbling to the floor, a perusing guard shooting her and any other people who had the misfortune of running past him.

He turned, seeing the crew of the Enterprise. Yelling and jabbing a finger in their direction, he drew the attention of the other men across the room.

The crew quickly dashed to the nearest cover.

"I thought you said we were transporting to the control room!" Kirk turned to Scotty, having to shout over the noise.

Scotty shook his head, his eyes wide in frustration and disbelief. "I never said that! That's what I set the coordinate to but there seems to be a slight problem!"

"I think I'm staring to figure that out!"

A guard stepped around the corner and Kirk quickly shot it. "We have to find the device," he told his crew.

The floor beneath them began to quiver, almost knocking them all off their feet again.

"It's gettin' worse!" Scotty reported. "If we don't do anything soon, we're done for!"

"The Talosian will be controlling the device somehow. To stop it we will need to stop him," Faaren told the captain.

"We'll need a distraction. Draw him away long enough for Scotty and Chekov to disable it."

Faaren nodded, shooting one of the last guards.

Kirk stepped out from cover, scanning the room from the short barrel of his phaser. There was no one else who firing at them, for the moment. There would be more soon enough, they couldn't let their guard down just yet. More people ran past them. Like murky shadows in a river, their faces were all distorted in panic and they moved past the crew as if they were beings in another dimension, unable to see or comprehend the small group there to rescue them.

"Scotty!" Captain Kirk lowered his weapon. "Can we get these people beamed out of here?"

Scotty shook his head. "It won't work, captain. It's one way here. I couldn't get a lock on anything on the ship due to the distortions rippin' through space. We're lucky we didn't end up transportin' inside of a wall or the like."

"Now you tell me this?"

Scotty shrugged, giving the same excuse he had used countless times before. Only this time there was no underlying humor, only grim reality. "I didn't want to disappoint you."

Captain Kirk merely nodded at his Chief Engineer before turning to Faaren. "There's escape pods on this vessel, right?"

"Yes," Faaren answered. "But there'll be more guards coming soon. And with more of the guards I doubt even half of these people will make it there."

"Not if we can help it," He muttered. "Jaylah!" He called out, watching as the people still fled around them.

"Yes?" Jaylah stepped forward.

"Hold down the fort. Make sure these people get to the escape pods."

Jaylah nodded as she turned, about to run after the crowd of people when she hesitated. She went to Scotty and wrapped her arms around him.

"Take care of yourself, lass," Scotty said, a tear trailing down his cheek.

Jaylah held on for another second, closing her eyes tightly before stepping away. "You as well Montgomery Scotty," She told him.

Scotty smiled back at her, or at least tried to smile but his face was lined deeply with the weight of sadness.

Jaylah looked at the captain, her amber eyes narrowing. "You make them pay," She spat on the floor before turning.

Chekov suddenly took off, heading to one of the primitive looking console displays. "Keptin!" He called. "It appears the power is originating from deck C."

Captain Kirk nodded. "Good work Mr. Chekov."

"Wait!" Chekov piped excitedly, nearly bouncing up and down. "If you can keep the Talosian distracted, I might be able to deactivate it from here. The device is directly connected to the ship's mainframe! So long as it does not get disconnected, I think I can shut it down from here!"

"You can turn it off?" Faaren asked.

Chekov nodded eagerly. "He's using the ship's existing systems to control the device's function!"

Scotty studied the readouts, a glimmer of hope flashing in his eyes. "He's right, captain. The whole processing programs of the device have replicated in the main systems. We can control it from here. So long as it stays plugged in..."

Kirk nodded. "We'll keep him distracted, make sure he doesn't reroute control of the device. You two do what you can from down here."

"Aye, keptin!"

"Come on let's go make that bastard pay." Captain Kirk said, stepping past Faaren.

"Right behind you, captain." Faaren said as they headed to the nearest turbolift.
