Spock had barricaded himself within the confines of a briefing room. The door would not close all the way, but as long as he kept firing, the intruders would keep their distance.

The commander glanced around the corner for a moment, scanning the are for additional hostiles. What he saw was much different than anything he could have anticipated.

A hazy purple light filled the hall, reflecting off the shining white walls. A tall humanoid appeared as the purple light dissipated. Its flowing robes fell over its shoulders and its head tilted curiously to the side.

"Spock?" A familiar voice called from the deep shadows of the briefing room.

Spock was about to fire, but hesitated as a figure began to take form and step out of the shadows towards him.

"Mother?"

She smiled sweetly, holding out her hands. "It's okay to be scared, Spock."

"You are not here," He told his mother, wishing very much that the words were not true. "Your sudden appearance here, at this time... it isn't logical."

His mother let her hands drop to her sides. "Not everything is governed by logic, my son."

Spock turned around the corner to fire at the aliens, but they were gone. None the less, the moment he moved away, several shots hit the corner he had just peered around. They were still there, but he couldn't see them. He fired blindly over the corner before ducking back behind cover, only to find his mother kneeling in front of him.

"I am here for you," She told him, gently cupping his cheek. "I always have been. I always will be."

Spock could feel the warmth of her skin against his. He tentatively reached out and grabbed her hand in his. It was warm, it was real.

She smiled. "Come with me," She told him in the same soothing voice he had heard so many times as a child. "It will be okay, Spock."

A tear rolled down his cheek as he found himself unable to control the onslaught of emotions. He held her hand in his a moment longer, letting himself pretend for one moment, that she was truly there.

And that was when he allowed his human emotions to take over. Only it wasn't the emotions he anticipated. Red, hot anger burned through his blood and he raised his phaser, pulling the trigger. The shot hit his mother and she staggered back into the table. Although he was blind to the world, he staggered out of the room and sprinted through the hallway. He couldn't see the aliens, but he could see the phaser fire hitting the walls and floors around him and from their trajectory, he could calculate their positions.

FIND HIM! A voice demanded and moments later the humanoid strode from the room in the direction of Spock.

Spock broke into a sprint.

You will help me take this ship! Damn the leader and his lies! He is nothing but a fool!

Spock kept running, the humanoid and the aliens quickly following after. Out of nowhere, came a bloodcurdling scream.

"Spock! Help me!" Uhura cried.

Spock winced, but didn't alter his pace. It was not real, he reminded himself as he kept running. None of it was real.

Suddenly section of a maintenance hatch blew inward, barely missing him. He staggered to the floor as the smothering remains of the metal hatch slammed against the far wall. Jaylah stepped out into the hall, shooting at the approaching aliens. She stepped back as Spock climbed to his feet.

"I believe I instructed you to head to the bridge immediately," He fired at several of the aliens, trying to ignore the screams that echoed through his head and at the torrent of familiar faces assailing him, all pleading for help.

Jaylah snarled, beginning to back up as the aliens approached. "There are too many spaces. I got lost!" She targeted the aliens.

Despite being drastically outnumbered in every conceivable way, they were beginning to hold their own. That was soon to change, however.

The entire ship tilted suddenly to the side and the ground began to tear open in front of them. Spock and Jaylah stumbled to a halt as the rest of the ship drifted away.

"This is merely a mental projection," Spock said as he grabbed her hand, pulling her away. The empty space vanished and they were back in the halls of the Enterprise.

There was a display built onto one of the walls. Spock stopped and quickly overrode the security protocols. Jaylah shot at two aliens approaching them.

"Captain!" Spock said as soon as the connection was made.

"Spock?" The captain exclaimed. "Where are you?"

"That is not important at this moment"

An alien moved around the corner. He was too close for Jaylah to get a clean shot and she rushed at him, knocking him backwards.

"We must not let the ship escape!" He shouted over the noise.

Jaylah wrestled for the alien's weapon, kicking at another one who had rounded the corner.

There was a long pause over the communications before Captain Kirk responded. "You mean the giant one that just appeared in front of us?"

Spock was about to respond when he realized someone stood directly behind him.

"Hold on , commander!" Jaylah yelled as she tossed her staff at the nearby display window. There was a bright flash of electric blue light and the thick glass shattered. Spock and Jaylah held tightly into whatever they could, but they were no match.

Jaylah's grasp slipped from the piping. The rest of the aliens were sucked into the vacuum of space and Jaylah was about to join them when Spock grabbed her wrist. She jerked to a stop, hovering between the commander and the dark abyss of space.

Spock's hands ached from holding onto the thin piping and holding onto Jaylah. His grip was faili when the emergency shielding slid into place, sealing the breach.

Jaylah slammed into the floor.

"Thank you, Commander." Jaylah slowly picked herself up.

Almost all of the intruders had been sucked into the vacuum of space. Almost all of them.

Spock and Jaylah turned, watching the stunned humanoid stagger to its feet. Spock grabbed a phaser. There would be no more mind tricks for it to hide behind now.
