Stay
Jax pulled up to the Avengers compound, walking inside.
✯
Jax was sitting on a couch in the main room, watching Tony and Rhodey.
Rhodey was trying to learn how to walk with devices on his legs.
Tony was helping him. "This is just a first test."
"Yeah," Rhodey agreed."
"Give me some feedback," Tony told him. "Anything you can think of. Shock absorption. Lateral movement. Cup holder?"
"No, I'm thinking about some AC down there," Rhodey told him, letting go of his shoulder, unable to keep his balance on his own, falling to the floor.
Tony knelt next to him. "Let's go."
Jax looked up in regret. "I'll give you a hand."
Jax stood, walking closer.
Tony and Jax knelt next to Rhodey, starting to help him stand.
"No, no, don't," Rhodey told them. "Don't help me. Don't help me." He sat up next to them. "138. 138 combat missions. That's how many I've flown. Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew them. Because the fight needed to be fought. It's the same with these Accords. I signed because it was the right thing to do. And, yeah, this sucks. This is... this is a bad beat. But it hasn't changed my mind. Not a thing."
Tony and Jax offered their hands.
Rhodey took them.
Tony and Jax stood, helping Rhodey stand.
"You okay?" Tony asked.
Rhodey nodded. "Oh, yeah."
An elderly man walked in. "Jax 'Stank', you have a visitor."
Rhodey chuckled. "Jax 'Stank'. Thank you for that." He looked at Jax. "I'm never dropping that, by the way."
Jax sighed. "Oh, my God."
"Table for one, Mr. 'Stank'," Rhodey told him. "Please, by the bathroom."
Tony chuckled.
The elderly man looked at Jax. "I'm sorry. I tried not to let her in, but she's very persistent."
Ana walked in.
Jax nodded. "Yeah, that's one for it." Ana raised her eyebrows slightly, tilting her head in acknowledgement. "It's good, Louis. Thank you."
Louis walked out, leaving.
Ana walked toward Jax. "I was hoping we could talk."
"I was hoping we could not," Jax told her.
Ana sighed. "Please, Jax."
Tony and Rhodey looked at Jax.
Jax looked at Tony and Rhodey.
Rhodey looked away.
Tony nodded for him to go.
Jax looked at Ana, sighing.
✯
Jax and Ana walked into an office.
"I'm glad you're back here at the compound," Ana told him. "I don't like the idea of you rattling around in a mansion by yourself."
"I know what this is about, Ana," Jax told her, walking toward the desk, sitting down. "And the reason that I haven't been contacting you is because I know what you would say."
"How can you be so sure about that?" Ana asked. "Have you even asked me?"
"I think overhearing you talking to your mom in the hospital about fighting on the wrong side made where you stand a little less than clear," Jax told her. "But I have a feeling that everyone's been leaving my side."
"Well, I'm not everyone," Ana told him. "And ever since I've met you, I've been on your side. But how can you even tell what side you're on anymore?"
"What are you talking about?" Jax asked.
"I mean, you left the prison to go to the Rogers, Barnes, Anders and my sister as a friend, and then it ended in a fight that left you rolling on the floor," Ana answered.
"Wait," Jax told her. "So this is somehow my fault?"
"No," Ana answered. "But this isn't their fault either. Anders and Barnes were under the influence of Hydra."
"And they killed my grandparents and my mother," Jax told her.
"I know," Ana told him. "Tatiana told me. I swear to you, we didn't know it was them. But I told you that Hydra had them targeted. The Super Soldiers are different than any other Hydra agent we've faced, because the Super Soldiers weren't doing what they were doing of their own free will. And me, my mom and my sister could have been just like them, or worse."
"I don't believe that," Jax told her.
"Because we were saved," Ana told him. "Jax, how is it up to you decide that Barnes and Anders aren't worth saving?"
Jax scoffed softly, shaking his head. "What?"
Ana walked closer, standing next to him, leaning against the desk behind her. "If it was me... if you had found out that me and my family had been the ones to kill your family... would you try to kill me? Would you give Tatiana more than just a little bump on the head? Would you kill my mother?"
Jax shook his head. "That's not fair."
"You're damn right it's not," Ana told him. "How is it fair to Barnes and Anders if you would give me and my family a pass and them a death sentence?"
Jax looked at her, hurt. "It's different with you."
"Why?" Ana asked. "Because you know me?"
Jax stood. "Because I love you."
Ana stood straighter to face him. "And what about the people that love them? Bree. Steve. Bree just got the love of her life back after 70 years, and you were ready to snuff him out. Anders is so close to being saved, and you tried to burn him through. Me and my family were saved. They can be saved, too. Tatiana was right. We shouldn't be killing the people that need saving." Jax looked down. "My faith's in people. And for the most part, they haven't let me down. Which is why I can't let them down, either."
"What are you talking about?" Jax asked.
"I'm just saying that I'm not leaving anymore of my team on their own," Ana answered. "And that means the whole team." Jax looked at her in confusion. "I love you, Jax. I do. And I know you're hurt, and you need time to sort this through. But please don't let this get the best of you. Not again."
Ana placed a hand on Jax's cheek, smiling a small smile, kissing him lightly and slowly, pulling away.
Ana and Jax looked at each other for a moment.
Ana turned around, walking out, leaving.
Jax watched her go, conflicted on what to do and confused where this left him.
Tony walked in. "So, how'd that go? That bad?"
"No, actually," Jax answered. "I wouldn't say it was good, either."
Tony groaned. "Oh. Those are the worst kinds of talks. Where does this leave you two?"
"I have no idea," Jax told him. Tony looked at him sympathetically. Jax looked at the burner phone in Tony's hand. "What's that?"
"A present," Tony answered. "From the Rogers. Their apology and offer for the team to still be there for us."
Jax looked at him curiously. He realized what Ana had meant by not leaving one of their team on their own, looking outside to see Ana in her car, driving away.
✯
It was sometime later.
In the Raft prison, there were several guards unconscious.
✯
In the compound, Tony walked toward his desk.
Friday: "Priority call from Secretary Ross. There's been a breach at the Raft prison."
Jax turned to face Tony. "Why doesn't that surprise me?"
Tony looked at the phone. "Yeah, put him through."
Friday answered the call.
They heard Ross' voice. "We have a problem."
"Ah, please hold," Tony told him.
"No," Ross told him. "Don't--"
Tony put Ross on hold, watching the line blink.
Jax smirked.
✯
In the Raft prison, in the cell room, Wanda was still in her straitjacket.
Scott was sitting on the floor, tapping against the wall.
Clint was lying on his bed.
Sam was pacing.
✯
In the compound's office, Tony showed Jax a letter from Steve.
Steve: (voice over) "So, no matter what. I promise you, if you need us..."
Tony and Jax looked at the burner phone on the desk.
✯
In the Raft prison, Clint heard something from his cell, looking up.
Sam looked out through his cell bars, smirking.
Clint saw something in the main room, standing, walking closer to the bars, smiling a small smile.
Steve, Bree, Natasha, Ana and Tatiana walked in.
Steve: (voice over) "We'll be there."
✯
There was a small get together in the middle of a park, mostly made of the team, Bucky and Alec, although, Tony and Jax were not seen.
Bucky and Bree walked along, in their formal wedding attire.
"After all this time, and we're finally together," Bucky told her. "And nothing's gonna tear us apart."
Bree turned to face him. "It was a very long wait. And I don't like waiting." Bucky smiled a small smile. "I'm just glad you're okay."
"What about everything else?" Bucky asked. "Everyone?"
"We'll find a way to make it okay," Bree answered. "What happened was awful, Bucky. But it wasn't you. You found a way to start fixing yourself. And I can help you keep it that way. And I will do everything to keep it that way. I promise."
"You know, I'm the one that's supposed to be making promises like that," Bucky told her.
Bree smiled a small smile. "You already made me a promise on the plane. And now you've fulfilled it. That's all the promise I need."
Bucky and Bree looked at each other for a long moment, kissing sweetly, slowly and passionately, content, ecstatic and relieved that it was finally a reality.
✯
Alec was standing by the lake, in a tuxedo.
Tatiana walked toward Alec in the red dress. "You seem a little too thoughtful and sad for a guy that just got his mind cleared of Hydra's influence."
"It's not clear," Alec told her. "It's still there. Bucky had to go through hell to get everything out of his head. He just got me my memory back. Everything Hydra put in my head is still there. And I need to make sure that I'm far away from everyone until I can make my mind right."
"I heard about your... decision," Tatiana told him. "Steve told me about T'Challa and Wakanda. You sure about this?"
"I can't trust my own mind," Alec told her. "So, until we get this stuff out of my head, I think being where no one can get hurt by me is the best thing."
"I can go with you," Tatiana told him. Alec looked at her. "Last time, you fought off me, my mom, my sister, T'Challa and both of the Starks without a problem. I'm sure that T'Challa would like the help over there."
"Yeah," Alec told her. "Me, too." He looked at her. "Thank you." Tatiana looked at him. "For everything. You didn't just get torn from your friends over this. You got torn from your family."
Tatiana looked toward where Clint, Natasha and Ana were with Laura and Clint's other children.
They were smiling.
Tatiana looked at Alec. "If my family can be saved, then so can you."
Alec looked at her in appreciation.
Tatiana smiled a small smile.
✯
Ana was walking along in her black dress, away from the others.
Jax was sitting in his car in the distance, watching everything. He was still hurt and reeling over the news about his mother and grandparents, but he felt guilty for trying to kill Bucky and Alec when they had been victims of Hydra, too. He looked at Ana from across the way.
Ana was relieved to see him, walking closer.
Jax got out of the car. "I didn't want to go over and intrude after what happened. But I thought it would be right to be here for Bree." Ana looked at him in understanding. "You're right. It wouldn't be fair to give you a free pass and them a death sentence. So, I guess I have to let them go."
"No one's asking you to like them or to forgive them," Ana told him. "But it's not fair to kill the two victims."
Jax sighed, nodding. "I know. Thanks. For reaching out to me. For getting through to me."
Ana smiled a small smile. "Of course."
They looked toward the others, content but still confused where this left them and left the team.
✯
Alec and Tatiana had gone to Wakanda, standing in a building.
Tatiana was standing nearby the wall of windows.
T'Challa walked toward her. "It is good to finally speak to the final Miss Romanoff without being involved in a fight."
"I am sorry about that," Tatiana told him. "About all of it."
T'Challa nodded. "As am I."
"Thank you, for all of this," Tatiana told him.
"Your friends, and my father, they are all victims," T'Challa told her. "If I can help one of them find peace..."
"You know, if they find out he's here, they'll come for him," Tatiana told him.
"Let them try," T'Challa told her. "They wouldn't just have to deal with me. They would have to deal with you."
Tatiana nodded in agreement.
They looked out of the windows to the large Black Panther statue outside of the building.
