8. Another Visit

"How is she?!" Victor asked. He ran up to Darcy.

Darcy was still standing by the doors she came out of. She hadn't noticed Victor and Sísele come in.

"Darc? Is she okay?!" He asked again.

Darcy blinked. "I-I-I don't know." She stammered. "They wheeled her off and sent me out here."

"Was she awake? Did she wake up?" Victor asked.

Darcy shook her head.

Victor sighed. He wanted to shake someone to demand answers out of them but he couldn't. He held his head with his right hand as he subconsciously looked for a seat.

Sísele went and sat beside him. She placed her hand, gently, on top of his and looked at him.

Victor leaned back in his chair and looked back at Sísele.

"Ish thish my fault?" Sísele asked. Her voice was meek. She spoke quietly, as if to keep a secret from herself.

Victor seen tears well up in Sísele's eyes. Her face was stricken with guilt, fear and sadness. He put his free hand on top of hers and smiled reassuringly at her. "No." He matched her tone. "This isn't your fault. Emily's sick."

Sísele let out a small wimper as she looked away. She took a deep breath and tried to hold it together.

Darcy sat down beside Sísele and remained quiet. She stared at the floor.

Their minds went numb for the moment. None of them wanted to think about what happened. No answers were given and no questions could be asked. Not yet, anyway.

It was a couple of hours before a nurse came out to talk to them. Darcy was jolted out of her trance.

"Emily is fine, for now." The nurse said. "The doctor will be along to talk to you." She smiled and walked away.

Darcy looked at Victor and shifted her weight in her seat.

A doctor walked up to them. He smiled to gesture that everything was okay. "Darcy? Victor?" He stopped in front of them.

Darcy and Victor stood up.

"I'm Dr. Willis. Emily's fine. She woke up a few minutes after we took her in. She's coherent and talking. We were going to run some blood work but she was able to articulate what happened to her. She said she was getting up off the floor and blacked out? Does that sound about right?"

"Yes." Darcy answered.

"She was laying the floor for a while. She rolled over and got up half way. Then she kind of.....Fell over. Rolled over." Victor explained.

"Yeah, okay. Well I noticed that her lymph nodes in her neck are a bit swollen. Which is common with flus and other infections. She does have a temperature, again, common with flus. She's a bit dehydrated and appears to be lethargic. Has she eaten today?" Dr. Willis asked.

Darcy and Victor turned and looked at Sísele.

Sísele stood up and nodded. "She did eat. Not a lot."

Dr. Willis nodded. "Yeah, that's common with the flu too. Sensitive stomach, lack of food intake, fever...I'd say this is the flu."

"But why she faint again?" Victor asked. "There's got to be something more."

Dr. Willis smiled reassuringly. "Low blood pressure." He answered. "You said she was laying down on the floor for a while, she's not feeling well, she got up too fast...Low blood pressure. It can result in fainting."

Victor looked at Darcy.

Darcy stared at the doctor. She was frowning. She didn't know if she should believe him, or if she wanted too.

The doctor smiled again. "You can go see her now. We have an IV hooked up to give her some fluids. After another hour or so, she should be good to go home." He offered one last smile before he walked away.

Darcy moved forward. She was going to see Emily. Victor and Sísele followed close behind.

The doctor let them through the doors, announcing to triage that he's taking them to Emily.

The nurse looked up at the four of them and nodded. She went back to the patient in front of her.

Darcy, Victor and Sísele walked through the doors. They followed the doctor to the desk where he asked a nurse to guide them the rest of the way. Dr. Willis turned to them and asked, "are there any questions before we part?"

"You said that you WERE going to do some blood tests. You said 'but'. Does that mean no bloodwork was done?" Darcy confronted.

"No. No bloodwork was done. Like I said, she was awake and coherent. She remembered what happened. All the symptoms lead to a flu." Dr. Willis smiled.

Darcy stared at the doctor.

Victor stepped forward and put his hands on Darcy's arms. "You think that was a good idea? Not do bloodwork? Maybe there's something else." Victor urged.

"Are there any other children at home?" Dr. Willis asked.

Darcy and Victor shook their heads.

"Okay. Does she get sick often?"

Darcy and Victor shook their heads again.

"Alright. So she's an only child and doesn't get sick often. I can tell you that, for someone who doesn't get sick often can sometimes have exaggerated symptoms. It's quite normal. Just like it's quite normal for parents to be very worried about their only child, who rarely gets sick, and is now sick with a flu with some exaggerated symptoms." He smiled reassuringly.

Darcy tensed. She felt that he was patronizing them. But his tone of voice was very kind and understanding. She couldn't get upset with him now. Darcy decided it best to not say anything.

Victor sighed. He nodded. He felt that maybe the doctor was right. Maybe he was over-analytical the situation and worries too much. He accepted the doctors assessment, but something told him that there had to be something more. Dr. Willis made sense but nothing about this did.

A nurse came along and gestured them down the hall. Emily was still in the emergency room so there were carts everywhere. Some nurses tried to keep them pushed to the side but sometimes they were still in the way. The nurse pointed to which stall Emily was in and went about her business.

Darcy opened the curtain and stepped in. She found a chair and sat in it. She looked at Emily and sighed. "How you feeling?"

Emily rolled her eyes then pinched her eyes shut. "I'm fine."

"No you're not." Victor said. He had pulled a chair in for Sísele to sit. "Do you need anything?" He asked Emily.

"Yeah, stop worrying so much. I have a headache." Emily answered. Her voice was low. She winced at the sound of her own voice.

"The doctor said...." Darcy started.

"The flu. Yeah. The other doctor said the same thing last night." Emily interrupted. "Now, please, stop talking." Emily grimaced.

Victor walked out of the stall.

Sísele reached her hand over to hold Emily's hand. "I'm shorry." She said, quietly. "You should've reshted like your mom shaid."

Darcy shot Sísele a look of shock. She argued with herself. She knew her mom would out Emily to work. Even when the doctor said for her to rest. Darcy shook her head. She wasn't going to say anything just yet.

"The nurse is going to bring Em a Tylenol." Victor whispered when he came back. He closed the curtain behind him.

The four of them went silent. Nothing could be said. Emily lay in a hospital bed because she fainted, again. All they could do was wait. The nurse brought Emily a half dose of Tylenol for her headache and offered some ice water.

Emily swallowed back the entire contents of the cup. She was thirsty. The cold water felt good against her throat as it went down. She didn't know she was so warm from her fever. The doctor told Emily she had a mild fever and had given her a half dose of Tylenol earlier. It didn't take long before Emily fell asleep.

A nurse had come in a short time later to check Emily's vitals. Checked her blood pressure, temperature, heart rate and oxygen level. Everything was normal.

Dr. Willis walked in twenty minutes after the nurse left. "Well, it looks like everything is normal. Emily is good to go home. The nurse will be by to take the IV out. You're welcome to wait until she wakes up. Unless we need the bed, of course." He smiled.

Nobody looked at him.

"Thank you." Victor said.

Dr. Willis smiled and walked out of the stall. Leaving the three adults staring at Emily as she slept.

It was an unnerving silence. Sísele continued to hold Emily's hand while Darcy held the other. Victor stood at the foot of her bed. They were glad to see her. Happy that she appeared to be okay. The three of them listened to each other's breathing as they waited for Emily to wake up.
