28. All At Once

Catherine allowed her jaw to drop. "You better call Victor." She said.

Adam gave a quick nod and walked away from the door. He pulled out his phone.

Emily finally stopped bleeding. Victor sat beside her and out of the paramedics way. His mind was frantic. But his body was still. Stiff. Tense. Emily lay unconscious in the gurney. Blood was crusted to her face and neck. It was like a scene from a horror movie. He wished she would just open her eyes and tell him she's ok. But she can't.

'She's lost a lot of blood' is what the paramedic said. Anything can happen. Victor listened to the siren as the tried to rush safely through traffic. They were about 10 minutes away. He tried to look out the back window to try to find Darcy when his phone rang.

"Hello?.....Adam? I can't talk right n......what?!.......are you sure?......ok. I'll let these guys know. Thank you." Victor hung up. He looked at the paramedic. It was his turn to be pale.

Darcy was trying to keep up with the ambulance. She tried to take advantage of the cars pulling off to the side. Her mind was on Emily. Thoughts ran through her head that worried her. Blood transfusion, IV, more tests for them to tell her it was a flu....or maybe allergies this time.

A car tried to race back onto the road in front of her. Darcy swerved to avoid collision. The car honked at her. Darcy let go of her breath and looked in the rear view mirror.

Sísele was still laying down. She was hugging her chest.

Catherine still sat beside her. She had finished singing the lullaby to her.

Sísele smiled. "I'm glad you got to shee Charlesh." She said.

Catherine smiled and nodded. "Yes. I was so afraid."

"You needn't be afraid anymore." Sísele squeezed Catherine's hand. "He wantsh to know. You tell him."

Catherine shook her head. "I can't."

"He'sh grown up now. He can handle it. He needsh to know. It will help calm hish shpirit."

Catherine sighed. "You might be right, sister. I promise I will tell him. I just don't know when."

Sísele smiled.

Adam had overheard what they said. He frowned. He wondered what it was Sísele could be talking about. He wanted to rush in there and demand to know. But Sísele didn't look like she was doing well. His stomach flipped. He started to feel anxious.

"Sister?" Catherine said. "Sister!"

Adam peeked through the open door. Sísele had her eyes closed. Catherine was trying to wake her. His body tensed.

Darcy's phone rang. She pressed the answer button. The Bluetooth in her car picked it up. "Hello?" She answered.

"Hey, Darc." Victor said. "I got a call from Adam."

"And!?" Darcy demanded.

"He said that his dad did remember. He remembered a woman from the reserve named Noomi. She had a small, little girl who was sick. Had to live in the hospital." Victor told her.

Darcy gasped. "Yeah! Yeah! That's mom and me! Ok! So what was it?"

Victor hesitated. "You had leukemia, Darc." Victor spit it out. There was no easy way to say it.

Darcy fell silent. "What?" She whispered. She zoned out. Emily could have cancer? She maintained the same speed, trying to keep up with the ambulance.

"Cancer. Darcy, you had cancer. And you beat it. We HAVE to get them to test Emily for it!" Victor waited for a response. "Darcy?"

Darcy looked up. A semi couldn't pull off the road. He sat still taking over two thirds of the highway. Darcy was in so much shock of the news, she missed seeing the ambulance swerve to the left.

Darcy gasped and held her breath. She swerved to the left.

Victor was watching through the window in the back door of the ambulance. He seen Darcy swerve. He jumped to his feet. "DARCY!!!" he screamed.

The paramedic reacted. He jumped and looked out the window.

"What's going on? What happened back there?!" The second paramedic shouted.

They seen glass shatter and fly everywhere. Pieces of car scattered on the road. A tire had bounced into the the lanes of oncoming traffic. Cars swerved to miss the tire.

Tires screeched on the highway.

Breaks screamed as they tried to stop.

Emily flinched. Twitched. She was dreaming. A small girl stood in front of her. Smiling. "It's ok, Emily. Come and play with me." Her small, innocent voice echoed. They were standing in a forest. A green hue glimmered through the trees as the sun tried to light the forest floor.

Emily smiled at her. "I can't. I have to ask my parents. They'll get worried if I go off without telling them." Emily explained.

The girl smiled. "It's ok, Emily. Your mom sent me to get you. She's over here. Come on." She waved her hand in the air as she turned around. She started to walk through the trees.

Emily frowned. She started following the little girl. "Who are you?" She asked. She ducked under a tree branch. "What's your name?"

The little girl started to run. She giggled. The sound echoed all around Emily.

"Hey! Wait! Where's my mom?" Emily called. She started to chase after the girl. Pushing through small branches and dodging larger ones.

The sunlight disappeared. It was dark all of a sudden. Emily entered into a clearing.

The little girl stood in the middle of the clearing. She pointed to the sky. Black, navy blue, and a single star.

Emily looked up. It was beautiful. She looked in awe.

"Make a wish, Emily. Make a wish." Her tiny voice echoed.

Emily looked at the little girl and smiled. "Ok." She looked up and looked at the star. "Star Light. Star Bright. First star I see tonight."

A mist had swirled into the clearing. The little girl started to giggle and disappear.

"I wish I may. I wish I might." Emily continued. "Have this wish...."

Through the mist, as the little girl faded away, Darcy came into view. She smiled at Emily.

"I wish tonight. I wish......" She closed her eyes. When she opened them, she looked at the little girl. But her mom stood there instead. "Mom!" Emily cried. She ran over to her and slammed her body into Darcy's.

Darcy wrapped her arms around Emily. "I was so worried about you Emily." She said.

"Well you don't have to anymore." Emily said, hugging Darcy.

"Come on. We have to go now." Darcy said. She let Emily go and turned around. "Come, Emily." She said over her shoulder. Darcy started to walk through the clearing and into the forest again.

Emily smiled. "Where's dad?" She asked, following Darcy into the trees.

"He's not here right now." Darcy said.

"Noomi!!" Catherine yelled.

Adam ran into the room. "What's the matter?" He asked in a frantic.

"I don't know. She's not answering." Catherine cried.

Adam rushed to the bed and gently moved Catherine out of his way. He knelt down.

"What's wrong? Is she sleeping hard?" Catherine asked.

Adam pressed his fingers against Sísele's pulse in her neck. Nothing. He checked her breathing. She wasn't. Adam sighed. He pulled out his phone and dialled 9-1-1.

Catherine stopped breathing. She squeaked through a tense throat. "What?" She squeaked out. "No!" She rushed over to Sísele.

Adam had stood up and moved away. "Ambulance." He said into the phone.

Catherine fell onto the bed beside Sísele. She started to cry.

"We have an elderly woman. She's not breathing. And I can't find a pulse." He said into the phone.

Catherine sobbed. She draped herself across Sísele. She clenched Sísele's shirt in her fists.

Adam remained on the phone with the operator. He had a hard time looking at Catherine and Sísele. He was getting choked up. "I don't know what happened, no." Adam said. "She was laying down. My mother was sitting with her. We thought she went to sleep. But she's not responding." He explained.

Victor fell into his seat on the ambulance. He was stunned. He bobbed around as the paramedic tried to rush Emily to the hospital.

"Alright, she's not breathing!" The paramedic hollered. He checked her pulse. "I got no pulse!"

Victor snapped out of his stunned state and looked at the paramedic. "What?!" He asked. He sat up and leaned forward.

"Performing CPR now." The paramedic announced. He leaned over Emily and started compressions.

Victor shook his head slowly in disbelief. He heard the second paramedic talk into her radio. He couldn't decipher her words. He couldn't focus on anything. He watched his wife crash. Emily Wasn't breathing and had no pulse.

"Say that again??" The second paramedic asked. "Seriously? The same place??" She looked in the rear view mirror. "That's horrible." She said.

Victor was falling apart inside as he watched the paramedic attempt to save his daughters life. His stomach did flips. He started to hyperventilate. Everything around him started to fade away while a heavy weight pressed against his brain. It all went dark.
