27. Tired

"How you doing, Em?" Piper asked.

Emily barely curled her lip. "Ok." She answered. She sounded weak and tired.

Piper sat on the edge of Emily's bed and stared at her.

"Yeah well you look like shit!" Rachel said.

Piper rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Why you befriended her is beyond me." She told Emily.

Emily tried to smirk. "I'm tired."

"You've been tired all day. Now get up and do something, lazy ass." Rachel said.

Emily wanted to laugh but she couldn't.

"Have you had enough to drink?" Joel asked. I can get you some more water."

Emily nodded. "Yeah. More water, please."

Joel nodded and walked out of the room.

"Are you hungry, Em? You should eat something." Nolan asked. "I don't mind getting you something." He pointed, with his thumb, behind him toward the door.

"No. Not hungry." She said.

"You should eat something." Piper tried. "Even just a small piece of something?"

Emily shook her head. She tried to sit up. She still had some water in the glass Joel brought her earlier.

Piper reached out and tried to help her.

Emily managed to sit while Piper propped pillows behind her. "There." Piper said. She sat down on the bed again.

Rachel moved and sat on Emily's desk chair.

Piper reached over and grabbed the glass of water for Emily. She handed it to her. "You're really sick." She observed.

Rachel clapped.

Emily took a drink from her glass and choked. Water spit back into the cup and Emily moved it away from her face. She choked and sputtered.

Piper gasped. She impedance to her feet staring at the glass of water. "Not again." She whispered. Blood swirled around in the water. Piper looked at Emily.

Blood splattered all over her blanket. It started to pour out of Emily's nose. Emily tried to catch it but she couldn't. There was too much.

Rachel sat straight. "Holy shit!" She said.

Nolan gaped at Emily. He didn't know what to do.

Piper ran out of the room to get Darcy and Victor. She pushed past Joel on the stairs, causing him to spill some water.

"Emily's bleeding again!!" Piper hollered as she burst into the livingroom. "She sat up and choked. Then blood started pouring out of her nose."

Darcy and Victor looked at Piper in shock. They jumped to their feet and ran upstairs.

Victor slammed into Emily's room and gaped at his daughter. She was covered in blood. Her comforter was stained red. Blood had left a trail across her lips and down her chest. Her shirt was wet with it.

Darcy stumbled on behind him with towels. She took one look at Emily and shook her head. "Uh-uh. This is worse than before. Call an ambulance!" Victor turned and ran downstairs to get his phone.

Darcy rushed over to Emily and started to cover her in towels. She held a towel under Emily's nose to try to catch the blood.

None of Emily's friends moved. They were too afraid to. They stood and stared in horror as Emily bled all over herself.

"We're calling the ambulance this time." Darcy told Emily. "This is much faster than the last time and you're already weak as it is."

Emily looked at her mom. She was scared.

Victor rushed back into the bedroom. He was talking on his cell. "No. She sat up and her nose started to bleed!" He said. "There's a lot!.......her shirt is drenched. The blankets covered in blood. My wife has a towel against her nose and that's filling up pretty fast."

Darcy looked right into Emily's eyes. "They're going to come and get you. Ok? You'll be fine."

"I don't know!" Victor stammered. "Darcy! What's Emily's blood type?"

"O positive." Darcy answered.

"O positive." Victor repeated. "Yes, she's still conscious.....no she's not talking. She has a towel in her face and her nose is bleeding.......oh. just a second." Victor shuffled toward the bed. He bent over and looked at Emily. "Not yet........ok." Victor stopped talking for a moment. He stood and watched Emily.

Darcy moved the towel from Emily's face and put another section of the towel in its place.

Emily started to feel dizzy. Her eyelids flicked and batted. Her body became weak.

"No! Emily! Try to talk to me!" Darcy demanded. "You can't go to sleep, honey. Stay awake!"

"She's starting to pass out!" Victor said into the phone. "Are you sure?......ok." he moved the phone away from his mouth. "They're on their way." He told Darcy. "Ten minutes out. We have to try to keep her awake as long as possible.'

Darcy nodded. "Emily. How are you feeling?"

Emily opened her mouth to speak but sputtered instead.

Darcy moved the towel.

Emily opened her mouth again but blood poured out.

Darcy gasped and out the towel back to her nose. Blood continued to pour out like a faucet.

"She can't speak. She has blood pouring out of her mouth too." Victor said into the phone. "Ok." He looked at Darcy. "Eight minutes out. They're going as fast as they can. The operator said."

Darcy nodded. The world around her seemed to blur. The only thing she could see clearly was the blood that poured out of Emily's nose and mouth.

Time flew by. Darcy hadn't noticed. Her only thoughts were to keep the towel to her nose, keep an eye on the amount of blood, and how to keep Emily from passing out.

"They're almost here!" Victor told Darcy.

Darcy nodded.

Emily's head bobbed. Darcy tried to talk to her. Asked her if she knew her friends were there. Told her she was going to the hospital. Anything that required a nod or a shake of the head. With the amount of blood coming out of her mouth, Emily couldn't talk.

"She's passing out. We can't keep her awake much longer." Victor said into the phone. "No. My wife is........still passing out, yes.........no. her head is bobbing and her eyes are closing.....my wife's still trying to talk to her......no."

Emily no longer responded to Darcy. Her head fell forward.

Darcy lifted Emily's head gently. She tried to wake her without success.

"Hey, is she awake?" Someone asked.

Victor turned and looked. "The Paramedics are here now." He said into the phone. "Ok." He hung up.

"No." Darcy said. "She just passed out now."

A paramedic walked over to Emily on the bed and kindly moved between Darcy and Emily. He grabbed the towel.

Darcy let it go and stepped back.

Victor moved to Darcy. "I'll ride with her in the ambulance, this time." He said.

Darcy nodded.

"You're ok to drive?" Victor asked.

Darcy nodded.

They both started watching the paramedic work with Darcy. The second paramedic pulled out a clipboard with papers in it.

"I just need to ask some questions here." She said.

Victor looked at her and nodded. "What do you need?" He asked.

"What's her name?"

Darcy had zoned out. She heard Victor's voice but it was garbled. She didn't hear anyone properly. All sounds drowned out and her surrounding environment had gone out of focus. She didn't know what was going on anymore. Was she tired? Scared? Was it the hate of feeling helpless?

"Darcy!" Victor shouted.

Darcy blinked and looked at him. The second paramedic was looking at her.

"Are you ok?" Victor asked.

Darcy nodded. "Yeah. I'm sorry. I don't like seeing her this way."

The second paramedic nodded. "Yeah, well no parent likes to see their child hurt. But it looked like you went somewhere else. You sure you're ok? I can look you over real quick."

Darcy shook her head. "No. Thank you. It's ok. I'm sorry. I'm alright. Are you moving her now?"

"Yeah. We're going to get a chair up here to get her down the stairs, then we'll put her on the gurney."

Darcy nodded. "Ok. And Victor is riding with Emily in the ambulance?" She looked at Victor.

Victor nodded.

"Yeah. You can follow us on your vehicle." The second paramedic said.

Darcy nodded. "Ok. Thank you."

The second paramedic walked out of the room.

"Did you give them everything they needed?" Darcy asked Victor.

"Ya I answered all her questions." He turned to Emily and friends.

Rachel was still sitting in Emily's desk chair. She was pale. Her mouth hung open as she stared wide-eyed at Emily.

Piper was pacing the floor. She started to chew her nails. She kept looking at Emily and looking away right away. It was clear she didn't like seeing Emily like this either.

Nolan stood still. He stared at the floor. His stomach wrenched at him. He was having a lot of difficulty watching Emily bleed like that. He wanted to help her but he couldn't. He felt useless.

Joel had turned toward the wall. One hand pressed against the wall as his other hand hugged his stomach. Joel had issues with blood. He wanted to vomit. Nolan had suggested to him to leave but Joel wanted to stay to make sure Emily would be alright. It was too late to take the nausea away but he thought if he just didn't look, he could manage. He just didn't know how he would get out of the room when they were done.

As everyone worked upstairs to get Emily out to the ambulance, Catherine was sitting with Sísele.

Sísele had started to sweat as she lay sleeping in the bed.

"How are you sister?" Catherine placed her hand on Sísele's arm. "And don't lie to me."

Sísele's eyes opened. "I don't know." She said. "My heart achesh."

"It's a lot of work and energy to help a sick child. And it must be hard for you since you've been here before with Darcy." Catherine acknowledged.

Sísele took a deep, shakey breath. A small tear fell from her eye and soaked into her pillow.

Catherine sat quietly with Sísele. She could here the paramedics talking as they came down the stairs. She heard them walk out of the house. She hear more commotion. Then the door closed.

Adam knocked on the door shortly after. "They're all leaving now." He told Sísele and Catherine. "They're getting Emily in the ambulance. Darcy said getting in the car so it looks like Victor is riding with Emily."

Catherine smiled at Adam and nodded. "Ok. Thank you." She turned back to Sísele. "I will stay here with you. And take care of you." She smiled wider. "Do you need anything? Water?"

"No." Sísele answered.

"You're sweating and you're warm. How about one of those frozen towels?"

Sísele smiled. She nodded carefully. "Ok" she chuckle lightly.

Catherine smiled and went to get a towel from the freezer.

"Is she ok?" Adam asked Catherine when she walked into the kitchen?"

"Which one?"

Adam pointed to the bedroom Catherine just came out of.

Catherine sighed. "I'm not sure. She's in pain. But I don't know where. She's been like this before when her arthritis was acting up. And she has been doing a lot of work lately. Hardly resting. I expected this. But there's a different feel to this one." Catherine frowned. After a moment of silence, she took the frozen towel to Sísele.

"How can I help?" Adam asked.

Catherine stopped. She looked over her shoulder at the floor. "What you're doing. You're here. You can try calling your dad to see if he's figured anything out, maybe?"

Adam nodded. "I'll do that."

Catherine gave a slight nod and a sigh. "Thank you." She turned and looked at Adam. "Thank you for being here. Being accepting and as understanding as possible. Not running away from all this chaos."

Adam stared at Catherine. He nodded at her and pulled out his phone.

Catherine nodded back and walked away. She sat back down at Sísele's side. She handed her the frozen towel. "I hope this doesn't put you in shock." She laughed. "You're not that hot."

Sísele smiled. "Thank you." She took the towel and gently touched her head with it. She closed her eyes. She was so tired. And her chest hurt. It was starting to be too hard to breathe.

Catherine decided to hum the lullaby.

Sísele looked at Catherine and smiled. She grabbed Catherine's hand and held it.

Catherine hummed and smiled at Sísele. Holding her hand, she felt she was doing all she could do.

"Hey, dad." Adam said on the phone. "Did you get a chance to think about it?.......you did? That's great. Did you remember what it was?..........what?!" Adam stopped moving. His body became still with time. "Are you sure??........yeah........ok. Thank you, dad......no.....I'll call you later. There's some things I need to talk to you about.......ok. Bye." Adam hung up. He stood in shock until he heard a sound.

It was a beautiful sound. He was attracted to it. He followed it to the spare bedroom where Sísele lay. He stood at the door and listened.

Catherine continued to hum. She felt Adams presence and looked to smile at him. But stopped.

"My dad told me what she was sick with. He even said Noomi's name."

Catherine waited for Adam to finish telling her.
