Mixed Up Words

I saw you in class today.

You brought your new pal.

And so I said your name, but you didn't respond to my call.

You glanced sideways, and I knew you met my eyes.

But you didn't even smile. Instead, I watched your eyebrows rise.

You turned to your new acquaintance, yet I didn't take the clue.

All I knew at that moment, was that I was still a friend to you.

I raced over to your side, and greeted you with an embrace.

But you pushed me away.

And you didn't seem to want me, if that was the case.

I couldn't quite understand, there had been something I've failed to comprehend.

Little did I know that our friendship was approaching an end.

And so I tried again, as I said your name.

You didn't even mind me. You treated me like those people you said were "Lame."

I stood there and wondered about why you were staring at me like a pack of dirty rats.

Not much time had passed by, only a summer had passed.

And without another glance, you started talking to the new girl.

But I didn't understand anything. All you said was nothing but a whirl.

You talked about fashion, clothes, and makeup.

You were talking about styles, not about which video games were hot.

Suddenly I knew. You had suddenly changed.

No longer would you laugh with me, and we would cease to play in the rain.

And though I tried to look away, I couldn't. I failed to focus on the textbooks, the chalkboard, the paper mâché birds.

Instead I kept hearing you and her, talking with what seemed like mixed up words.

It dawned on me—An idea that I once thought couldn't be true.

For I had suddenly realized that what I would now be talking about—Video games, books, and everything in between—would sound like mixed up words to you.

Heyyo!

I wrote this sometime back and forgot to add an authors note to it...

Anyways, I wrote this based off Ali Benjamin's amazing novel "The Thing About Jellyfish" which also happens to be my favorite book.

It follows the first person point of view of Suzy Swanson, a young twelve year-old girl coping with the death of her ex best friend Franny Jackson, knowing that she would never able to have closure with Franny as they had gone separate ways before her death.

I really recommend you should check The Thing About Jellyfish out. It was part of the short list of finalists for 2015 The National Book Awards, and it's seriously a great book who's message will stick with you until the very last page.

Do check it out, and remember to give my little book of poems a vote and a comment.

Thanks!
