24. Everyone is good at something

"Goal! I gave goal!", Jimmy squeaks, his arms high in the air as a sign of the winning. I smile at him, but that smile fades when his dad gets out of the house.

"Is she okay?" I rush to him, asking at the same time his son brags about the goal he gave.

"She is. She's calling someone. I borrowed her the phone." I frown. That must be Tyler and she must be begging him to see Michael.

I don't know if that is a good idea, to be honest. Again, diary, I'm not jealous, just scared that he can hurt her more than he already did. But as Chloe said, let it be her last time. Though, Stella does not have to know that.

"That reminds me", Klaus says, and I pay attention back to him. "I bought you a phone, an ancient one, but..."

"It is okay", I assure him, smiling.

"I gave Stella mine now for the call, and don't worry", he lifts his finger in the air, "It's safe. We left in the house the ones Scott gave us. This one work that matters. Though, I didn't have money to buy one for her, too."

"It's okay", I repeat. "We are going to manage with one somehow. Do not worry."

"Yeah, do not worry, dad", Jimmy repeats my words and I chuckle at him slightly, putting my hands on his little shoulders.

"Okay, do you want to eat now, Jim?"

"Yes!", he squeaks, but Klaus stops him from going into the house. "Let's wait for Stella to finish her ca..." Just when he says this, the door creaks and opens, revealing Stella who is suddenly glowing.

I knew it.

She is going to see him.

"Thank you." She hands the phone to Klaus and smiles sweetly at him.

"Let's go." Jimmy is pushed to the house, followed by his dad, and Stella and I are left alone.

She is smiling at me and I am happy to see it but simamntaoulsy afraid that the smile is going to vanish soon when he hurts her again. I don't wanna predict anything bad, but somehow I know that he can only hurt her because he is hurting himself. Unless he changes, I won't let her near him again.

I want to prevent him from hurting her, but how when she looks so happy to see him? I cannot take it from her. I would give everything to see Emily one last time and I know it would hurt to see her alive one more time, but at the same time, it could be good. So, I understand Stella. It hurts, but it feels good at the same time. Bittersweet would be the right word for it.

"I'm going to see him tomorrow! Tomorrow!", she squeaks and claps her little hands and wraps her arms around my neck, taking me off the guard so, I slightly step back, dragging her with me, but quickly catch her waist and steady us, so we don't fall on the muddy grass.

"But my hair is greasy!" She pulls away, panic clear in her green eyes that are shining under the foggy moonlight that is hidden because of the clouds.

"No, no. It is not", I try to assure her, but she is shaking her head.

"It is. And I can't wash it because we don't have a shower. How am I going to go? I don't even have a hairband to tie it. Not to mention how gross I look when I do that..."

"Stella. Stella!" I put my hands on her shoulder, slightly jerking her, so she can look at me. When she does I start talking.

"You look beautiful. It does not matter if your hair is greasy or not, he lo..."

"Yeah." She bows her head, sadly. "He doesn't love me either way."

"No, no, that is not what I wanted to say."

Oh, how stupid you are Myles.

Very, my consciousness adds.

"But still." She shakes her head as if she wants to get rid of those dark thought she usually has. "I want to look good. And those things Chloe has given me aren't really my style. I look gross", she pouts.

"No, you don't! Look at me." I lift her chin and her eyes flicker at mine. "You are beautiful. Besides I can braid your hair so he cannot see if it is greasy or not", I suggest.

"You can?" Her expression enlightens and her eyes now hold the leap of fate. "You would do that for me?"

"Of course, I can. Of course, I would. I would do anything you ask from me, Stella." I tug the strand of her hair behind her ear, and she smiles, but her brows are low, showing how sad she is at the same time.

"Thank you!", she squeaks and hugs me again, though this time quicker than the last time.

"We can watch stars first...", I suggest but when I lift my head to the sky I see none. The clouds hid them all. Stella's arms are still around my neck, and I bow my head to look at her.

"Or we cannot..."

"It is okay. Now we have more important things to do than staring at the distant white dots. Tomorrow is the big day."

Is it? It indeed is. Her last time to see the love of her life.

How cruel I sound, my diary. Remind me why am I listening to Chloe, again?

"But wait." She suddenly stops walking and I almost bump into her, my face inches away from hers. So, I move quickly, stepping back when I notice that. "Did you know that Chloe went first to Tyler's house to search for me?"

Oh-oh.

Tyler must have mentioned this to her. What do I do now? Act clueless or not? I decide to act as if I did not know this, so, I just shake my head, knowing that if I speak she would realize that I am lying.

"She was lying! I can't believe it! I thought that I could trust her!" She shakes her head, angrily and hopelessly.

"Maybe she just didn't want to go worry you because you were so angry with yourself for not telling her that we had escaped. So, maybe she thought that if she told you that she had been searching for you, you would blame yourself more, so she chose to lie for your own good", I try my best to defend Chloe and not give away what I know.

She would be proud of me, wouldn't she?

"Maybe." She tilts her head, thinking. "But still it's lying. I don't know. Maybe you are right. I sometimes really am hard on her. I don't know why. I know that she is my best friend yet I keep pushing her away from everything I do."

"It is okay. You are scared. She understands that."

She crosses her arms against her chest, and I begin to wonder if she is cold.

"She has told me that today. She wants to know my hobbies and...", she trails off.

"And?", I press, frowning when the wind blows. She is going to catch a cold, standing only in the shirt with short sleeves.

"And what happened to me. You know." She rolls her eyes. "My mother."

"Oh", is all I say.

"She told me what happened to hers, but I think I dozed off while she was talking because I was so tired. I just remember the nightmare", she shakes her head as if she is trying to get rid of it.

"It will not happen anything bad if you tell her."

"Yeah, I just can't bring myself to say it." She starts biting her lower lip.

"It is okay. I am sure she can wait until you are ready", I say, sure that Chloe will go easy on her.

"Yeah, she has said the same thing. Then, I guess she can."

"Come on now. You will catch a cold." I touch her back and slightly push her forward. "Let's style your pretty hair, ba..."

"Say it", she whispers, turning over her shoulder, blinking rapidly.

"Baby", I repeat, hesitating. "Let's go, baby."

"By the way, my pretty greasy hair", she corrects me, scoffing and I put my hand on her lower back, and gasp, when she does not flinch yet, continues walking, pushing the wooden door open and entering in it for which I am so happy.

☆☆☆

"Teach me how to do it! Teach me!", Jimmy squeaks, jumping on the bed where Stella and I are sitting. We have found two hairbands in the bag that Chloe packed for the hospital, so now I'm braiding Stella's hair.

She winches, making me aware that I'm stern with her hair. I am being really careful but it is kinda hard when it is not brushed and for some unknown reason, Chloe didn't decide to put the brush in the bag, as well. Isn't that the woman's most important thing to have?

"Sorry."

Baby.

I want to call her baby each second, but I feel guilty knowing that she will run into Michael's arms tomorrow.

"It is okay. Can I bow my head? My neck is hurting", she complains with a small grunt.

"Just wait for a little bit."

"How do you do it?" Jimmy's body is now curled next to me, while he's gasping.

"You see, we have three strands." I show, and he nods, his lips parted. "So, you flip one over the other and add more hair..."

"Okay, can I try?", he asks when I finish the first braid.

"Please", Stella says, turning to us, as if she could sense that I have finished one side, "don't use my hair for teaching. This hurts so fu... much", she corrects herself when she becomes aware of Jimmy's presence.

"So fu much", he frowns, asking what that means.

"No, no, just so much", I quickly tell him, shaking my head.

"Please, let me tries it", he begs and his puppy eyes are so cute that I have to let him. But, Stella has to let him, as well. As Jimmy can sense that, he looks at her. "Stella, please!"

"Fine", she mutters and I just know that she is rolling her eyes even though I can't see her.

"I flip under or over?"

"Um. Over. You can do it under, as well, but that way it will not look like this. Kinda different, but still a braid."

"Okay. And I puck up hair and add, right?" He turns to look at me and I nod, trying not to burst into laughter because this sight is so cute.

"No, no, it doesn't look good!", he sighs and his face saddens.

"It's okay. Try again." I lean on the wall and watch him stick his tongue out of his lips, concentrating.

"Please, Jimmy, can you let Myles do it now and then next time you can try, I promise", Stella begs, impatient and I put my hand on my chin, elbowing myself while watching Jimmy whose face is frowned, still focused, with the tongue out of his lips, determined to do it properly.

"No."

I can see Stella's expression in the little window and she gasps, not believing that he told her no. I chuckle, trying to cover my laughter.

"And why not?" She frowns, her mouth still opened in surprise.

"I have to teach this now."

"Learn", both she and I correct him at the same time.

"But why now? Why is it so important?"

"It is."

"No, it's not."

"It is."

"No, it's not."

"Okay, it's not!" His hands let go of her hair as he jumps off the bed, frustrated.

"It is okay, Jimmy. You will learn eventually ", I try to comfort him, but he crosses his arms against his chest, pouting.

"Jimmy, please, don't be mad." Stella turns to him. "But, my hair is really long and even Myles needs time to braid it on one side. Let's just let the master do his specialty, okay?"

My heart melts at her choice of words, and my lips curl into a smirk.

"I want to be master, as well!" The little Chinese boy pats the floor with his feet, angrily.

"But you are." She takes his small hands and he slowly stops frowning.

"Really?" He tilts his head and his eyes become puppy ones.

"Yeah. You are so great in technology and numbers and not Myles or me can do that, let alone understand."

"Well..."

"See?", she chirps. "Everyone is good at something. And you will learn how to braid. It's just that I'm really tired tonight and I want to lay as soon as possible."

"Okay." He bows his head and shifts on his feet back and forth. "Sorry."

"It's okay." She cups his cheek and I notice how they turn the shade pink. I beckon the spot next to me.

"Come, sit. You can still watch and learn."

He quickly climbs on the bed as if he is a little dog, putting his bump next to me and gasping at each movement my hands make. "Do not worry, buddy, you will learn it, too. It is not hard, at all."

"Buddy!", he repeats, squeaking and his arms quickly wrap around my waist and I am taken off guard, trying to keep my hands in Stella's hair, holding the strands of it, remembering which of them should I flip over next.

"Buddy!", Stella squeaked, as well, laughing and trying to touch Jimmy's body, but her arms are short and when she puts her over her head she barely can touch Jimmy's little one.

"Wait, you guys, let me first finish this, and then we can hug each other", I murmur between them, still pulling Stella's hair a little too tightly.

☆☆☆

"What are you doing?", Stella asks me when I place sheets on the ground. Her face can be seen pretty well while her hair is pulled from it, and she looks so stunning with no make-up. Now her eyes can finally be shown well unlike when she puts tons of black eyeshadow and other things she puts, I don't know their names. Emily never used make-up, just a little bit of lipgloss.

"Um... I am going to sleep here", I announce, looking at her and then at the floor.

"No fucking way!", she exclaims and frowns, crossing her arms, pouting her full lips while I turn to see if Klaus and his son can hear us. They seem undisturbed, preparing to lay on the sofa, as well.

"It is okay. Do not..."

"I'm not letting you sleep on the floor. We slept in the same bed for two nights, so we can sleep again."

"We do not have to. The bed is really small and..."

"The one in the hospital was small as well, yet we managed to sleep peacefully."

Peacefully. She slept peacefully? I did as well.

"I just thought..."

"Pick that shit up and come to bed", she orders sternly and I know better than to disobey her or question her.

I pick up the sheet and climb to the bed after I turn off the lights. Now the only light is coming from the small window. Stella covers me with blankets and I avoid her eyes, laying on my still hurt back, trying not to wince because that will make her worried.

Just then I notice that my T-shirt smells like pancakes that Chloe helped me make today. Great.

"I smell on pancakes", I whisper. She looks at me and rolls her eyes. So typical of her.

"It's okay. My hair probably still smells of chlorine, but it's okay. Who wouldn't want a pancake's perfume?", she chuckles, and I join her.

I liked the way she laughed while we were braiding her really long hair. It took me over half an hour to do that without a brush. I managed. And she liked it. And Jimmy liked it as well. I Hope Michael will like it, too because he is the main reason we did it. For him.

I loved the way we all hugged beforehand and how Stella was playful with Jimmy, tickling him and pretending that she was going to bite his ear off. I was just looking at them, while their contagious laughs were filling the small room. I caught Klaus' glance, as well, and the smile on his lips that mirrored mine.

"Jimmy!", we hear Klaus shout and turn in the direction of the room but we both startle when some figure jumps on the bed. I recognize Jimmy's because he is a small one. He is trying to lay between us two, adjusting his little body next to ours.

"What the...", Stella trails off, confused.

"Jim... bring your ass here right now!", his dad yells from the other room.

"No! I wanna sleep with them!", he pouts and crossed his arms and his elbow hits my rib, so I wince, not being able to hold the pain I feel anymore.

"Move here." Stella pulls Jimmy's body on her chest, giving me some space and I glance at her, smiling in order to thank her. She just nods in return.

"The bed is so small for the three of you."

"It is not!", I shout, trying to assure him that it is okay if his son stays with us tonight

"We are okay! We fit!", Stella adds, trying to cover our bodies with sheets. "You okay?" She leans in my ear and whispers. Her hot breath on my skin awakens butterflies in my belly and I try to ignore them, but their wings are widely spread and they are flying so fast through my belly.

"I am."

Our faces are so close to each other and I can see her pupils, how dilated they are, and shine in them. She is blinking, trying to blink the fatigue away, while her eyelids are treating to close.

"Sleep now."

"Good night!", Jimmy squeaks and his fist clenches my shirt and he nuzzled his face in it. "Oh, pancakes!"

Stella and I chuckle and I watch how her eyes are closing while she is slowly drifting to sleep. Hopefully in the dreams and not nightmares.

My hand fondles her cheek and her lips part while her lashes are wiping the dark circles underneath her eyes. I put my arms around her neck and she moves her head to my chest, pulling Jimmy with her, who is laying on her chest.

I frown when they both hit my chest, feeling pain in my back, but squeeze my teeth and close my eyes because I love having her on my chest, and not even the worse pain will stop me from having her there.

Soon enough I, too doze off with the head of the most beautiful woman on my chest that is peacefully sleeping and already snorting cutely on which I chuckle and fall asleep with a smile on my face.

☆☆☆

"Jim", someone's whispers wake me up, but I do not open my eyes immediately. But then I feel something hard on me, moving and pressing my stomach with its little hands.

"你必须起床."
(You have to get up.)

I frown in the foreign language, trying to decipher where I am.

"是."
(No.)

"起床男孩!"
(Get up boy!)

"Jim!" The person that is laying on my body is hitting it with his head and at the sound of his name, I open my tired eyes. When I do I see Klaus leaning close to my face, his hands jerking his son's asleep body.

"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to..."

"It's okay", I whisper, gesturing for him to be quiet and get out of the room, while I try to wake up Jimmy.

I see the light coming from the small window. When I turn my head to it I see the colorful sky just like it was yesterday, the first day of our new lives. Just like when Stella and I got up to escape from our past life. Now Jimmy and Klaus have to get up too, to come back to their everyday life for people who hurt them in that life not to find out about their secret including Stella's and mine name. Klaus' new daughter and son, and Jimmy's older sister and brother, whom he loves so much. So much that he wanted to sleep with them in the same small bed from which now I have to pull him out.

"No!", he squeaks when I try to pull his wrist with me while putting my bare feet on the ground.

"Shhh! You will wake her up!", I scold him. When I glance at Stella I see her head moving slightly.

"Oh!" He turns his head to her and stares at her sleepy face with closed eyes and parted lips that are letting out cute sounds of sorting. "She is so beautiful!", he half-whispers, half-yells not turning his face.

"She is", I sigh. "She is." I cannot disagree with him. Even a thirteen-year-old boy can see her undeniable beauty that shines under the mask of pain that covered it, trying to hide the beauty but failing miserably.

"Do you love her?" I snap my head in his direction, shocked by his question. "Do you love her like my mom loved my daddy?"

I pull his body and place it on my lap, taking in his brown eyes now without glasses. One tear rolls down his cheek and I rush to wipe it.

"Shh, Jimmy, it's okay." I wrap my arms around his tiny frame and soon his head is on my chest, while the sobs coming from his mouth are muffled.

"I miss mum", he sobs and I squeeze him tighter as if that could help him somehow.

"Jim...", Klaus stops mid-sentence, as well stopping at the entrance of the room, puzzled when he sees his son sobbing in my arms.

"It's okay", I mouth at him, and his expression sadd3ns at the heartbreaking sight of his son longing for his mum.

"Do you miss your mum, Myles?" He pulls away from me, gluing his eyes on my face and I catch Klaus quickly hiding behind the wall. He must be hiding tears. I focus my eyes back on the little Chinese boy.

"I do, Jimmy. I really do."

"Where is she? Is she as well in heaven, like mine?"

"I... I am not sure. I did not see her in a very long time, so I do not know", J admit.

"Oh", is all his small mouth mutters. "And Stella? Where is her mom?"

"She is ar heaven, like yours", I say, throwing glances at Stella, who is still sleeping peacefully.

"She is! Maybe they are together there!", he claps his hands and squeaks louder than he should and that makes Stella move. Both of us look over at her while she rolls her body to the other side, facing the wall.

"Is she woke up?"

"Awake", I correct him. "I don't know", I whisper back at his ear, my lips brushing it. I put the blanket on her uncovered body and turn my head to Jimmy.

"Jimmy..."

"I have to go now I know", he bows his head sadly.

"I want you to stay so bad, but then..."

"Scott will find you and Stella."

"Yeah."

"It is okay. We will come back, right?"

"Sure." I smile kinda bitterly, not sure when they are going to come back exactly.

He climbs off my lap and runs to the living room where Klaus is waiting for him. I follow him, yawning and rubbing my eyes, but not before I make sure that Stella is still asleep.

"Go back to sleep, son." Klaus pats my shoulder, massaging it.

"I want to send you off." I run my hand through my messy and long hair that I am not used to. If it hadn't been for Stella, I would have cut it off yesterday.

We get out of the house as quietly as possible, but the old wooden door does not make it easy for us. Jimmy and I hugged and he kissed me on the cheek and told me to kiss Stella, as well when she woke up and I promised him I would, knowing that was a big lie. I want to do that more than he knows, but I cannot, unfortunately.

Klaus hugged me as well and told me to take care of Stella and myself and to call him on the private number that he had already put on my new phone if I need something, do not hesitate. He promised they would come back as soon as they can when they make sure that Scott's men are no longer following them.

I watched until their silhouettes vanished in the farthest line where I could no longer see them, holding hands with one another, leaving me alone in the black surroundings with dead nature, but with the colorful sky above my head. I sighed and came back to the house, scared that Stella would start panicking if she does not find me just like she did yesterday. On the memory of her face holding fear when she thought that I was gone my heart skips a beat and it melts while aches at the same time.

I try to stop thinking about how she fell on her knees, saying how much she loved him and how she couldn't stop doing that no matter how much she had tried to. No matter how much it keeps hurting her, she cannot stop her broken heart from loving the guy who is responsible for why her heart is broken in the first place. I know it had broke, too when her mom died, but he broke it again.

I came back to bed and laid next to her carefully so as not to wake her up while her body is still rolled to the side and facing the wall. I rolled my body that way, as well, my hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her body closer to mine, before I could realize what I was doing. She didn't move and I took that as a sign that she didn't mind. I closed my eyes, while nuzzling my head in the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent. And before I could think about how maybe it is not the best idea to do that to the girl who still loves someone else, I fell asleep.
