Chapter 9

Jaydan's POV

The next morning, after our pizza date, I called Victoria to wish a good morning and to remind her that tonight would be our final formal meeting with the wedding planner. Once I hung up, I showered and got dressed before heading out to my car.

"Where are you going so early?" My dad asked as I was about to climb in my car. I had to think about an excuse and fast.

"Visiting Victoria before we both go off to work," I said with an easy grin. I wasn't exactly lying, I was going to Victoria's apartment, but only after she left.

"Well have fun," he said before he headed back into the house.

I got into the car before I drove to Victoria's apartment. I parked across the road as I waited for her to go to work. I watched as she exited the building and climbed into her car once she drove off I climbed out and headed to her apartment building.

Victoria gave me a key to her place right after she moved in. She wanted me to come and go as I pleased and she wanted me to have a key incase of emergency. Which was the case today.

I took the stairs two at a time as I headed up to Victoria's apartment. I was shocked to find Alec crouched down at her door.

"Alec?" I asked.

He jumped a little when he saw but quickly replaced an easy grin on his face, "Jaydan, what are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," I said.

"I was looking for Victoria, then I saw this piece of note sticking out from her door, it says 'I'm watching you'. What is going on Jaydan?" He asked as concern filled his eyes.

"Nothing to worry about, Alec. Just one of Vic's station buddies who is pranking her. Why are you looking for Victoria?" I asked as I took the note from Alec's hands.

"I wanted her to help me choose a suit for your wedding, I'm the best man afterall and I want to look great," he said with a huge grin. Oh Alec and his need to impress every single lady out there.

"How about you drop by at the office during lunch time and I will let my mother come take you measures so that she can make a fitting suit? How does that sound?" I asked.

"Sounds good, I'll see you then." He said before he pats me on the back and leaves. That was too close for comfort. I look at the note in my hands. The stalker wasn't giving up.

I unlocked the door to Victoria's apartment before I entered, closing it behind me. I looked around her place before my eyes landed on the dustbin. It wasn't how I wanted to spend my morning, looking through my girlfriend's trash, but I needed to know if she received more letters from her stalker, besides the one Alec found under her door.

I rolled up my sleeves before I placed plastic gloves on my hands. I started to dig around when I found a letter that said:

Did he ask the question yet?

The stalker knew I was going to propose to Victoria, this sent alarms off in my head. I placed the letter on the counter and dug further.

The second note I found said:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Victoria is getting married
Think you know your fiancé as well do?

This stalker was playing with her and enjoying it. This made me beyond angry and I knew I had to find a way to stop this guy.

The last letter I found said:

I hear the wedding bells will be ringing soon, I wonder how your dress will look on you

This made me even more angry. This stalker knew everything about us and it made me sick to think someone has been watching Victoria so closely.

I quickly grabbed the letters before I restored the garbage bin to its proper glory. I took out a plastic bag in which I threw all the letter I found, including the most recent one.

Once Victoria's apartment was back to its original state I locked the door before I headed downstairs with the notes safely tucked in my breast pocket. I quickly threw away the plastic gloves in the garbage bin in the hall before I took out my phone and dialled a number I saved for special emergencies.

The person picked up on the second ring.

"Shawn, it's Jaydan Stewart. I need to see you. Can you meet me at my office at 10:00?...Good, see you then," I hung up before I headed to my car across the street and drove to my office. I hope this guy could help me catch this stalker.

Victoria's POV

Once I arrived at the station Tim was waiting for me with Mr Samuels. Mr Samuels had a box full of papers and letter in his arms.

"Detective Wills," Mr Samuels greeted me as I approached them.

"Mr Samuels, I take that you brought all the threatening letters your firm has received in the last few months?" I said as I nodded to the box in his hands.

"Yes, I hope this would offer you some help into finding his killer. I suppose you want our financial records too?" He asked.

"Yes, we do," Tim said.

"I would like to give it to you, would you be able to fetch it tomorrow? I would have our assistant put everything together for you," he said.

"That would be very kind, we will fetch it tomorrow morning first thing," I agreed.

"Thank you, now if you will excuse me I have arrangements to make and clients to inform," he said as he placed the box into Tim's arms before he bid us goodbye.

"Well he is helpful," Tim said.

"Very. Think it is a guilty conscious?" I asked curiously.

"Might be. But for now let's look for a motive" Tim said as he placed the box onto his desk.

"What's that?" Captain Allen asked as he came closer.

"A box full of threatening letters the victim and his partner has received the last few months," I explained.

"And do you think you will find anything?" He asked.

"Only time will tell," Tim replied.

"Well the coroner's report would be done this afternoon, meanwhile get to work on those letters and let me know when the wife and son arrive, I want to be there when they give their statement. Tim, was there any gun found on the scene of the crime?" Captain Allen asked.

"No sir, but officers are searching the surrounding area for any sign of the weapon."

"Good, get to work detectives and let me know when you find anything valuable," he said before he walked off.

"Wow, he is sure invested in this case," I remarked.

"He wants this case to be solved ASAP, don't know why though. Might be the press or the commissioner breathing down his neck," Tim said with a shrug as he looked through the letters.

"I doubt my father would be breathing down his neck- wait a minute, Green was a lawyer. I knew I recognised that surname from somewhere," I said as everything fell into place.

"What do you mean? From where do you recognise it?" Tim asked as I gathered my keys and phone.

"I think my mother knew the victim and that is why my father is breathing down the captain's neck. I have to go ask my mother a few questions, will you be fine going through the letters?" I asked.

"Yes, now go. I will cover for you, I hope you find something that will help us with this case," he said and I hoped the same. I didn't know why I didn't see the connection earlier.

The drive to my mother's law firm passed by quickly and I stared at the intimidating building. It wasn't as huge as Jaydan's building, but it was still big.

Once I entered the building I asked the lady at the desk to see Annabeth Wills. I told her I knew the way to my mother's office and she told me I can go on ahead. I headed to my mother's office. She had a office completely made of glass and I could see she was in meeting. She was busy talking to the people that sat scattered around the table when I caught her eye. She gave me a brief smile before she said something to the people and they started to pack up and leave the room.

I waited for the last person to leave the room before I entered her office.

"Vici! This is a surprise," she said a she came over and hugged me.

"Sorry to barge in like this," I apologised as she pointed me to a chair. I sat down before she walked around the desk to take a seat too.

"I don't mind. I guess Jaydan told you about the small squabble Amelia and I had yesterday. I'm sorry honey, it's just that I want you to have a beautiful wedding," she explained.

"I know mom, but it's up to me and Jaydan to make the final decisions. We know you both have only our best interest at heart, but it's still our wedding and I think it is up to us make the final decision. But anyway I'm not here to talk about the wedding," I said.

"Oh, then what are you here to talk about?" She asked curiously.

"Nathaniel Green, you know him?" I asked even though I knew the answer.

"You're the detective on the case," she said.

"Yes, and mind telling me why Dad is breathing down my captain's neck to solve this murder?" I asked.

"I'm sorry dear, I might've gone into shock when I found out Nate was murdered. I told your father that he called me the day before, he said he wanted to talk to me about something," she explained.

"Did he say what he wanted to discuss?"

"No, he only said that he needed to get something off his chest, he couldn't carry on like this anymore. He wanted advise, he knew that I was married to George and he hoped I could advise him on the proper steps to take. He was very nervous. And stressed, I could hear it in his voice," she told me.

"So he had something he wanted to get off his chest, but he was murdered before he could," I said slowly as I thought it through.

"That was exactly what I thought, and I shared these thoughts with your father. That's why he was pushing the case. He thought it suspicious too," my mother explained.

"I do too, but there is procedure to follow and he could've wanted to talk to about anything. Just allow me to look at everything first. Mom, I promise you that I will find the person responsible and they would be brought to justice. But for me to do this, I need to do my job thoroughly and I can't do my job thoroughly when there is someone breathing down my Captain's neck who would start to breathe down mine," I said.

"I know. You've always been good at finding the truth and I trust you would. I'll talk to your father. I guess we should trust our daughter," she said with a smile.

"You should, Tim and I are a great team," I said as my phone started to ring.

"Excuse me," I said before I answered.

"Detective Wills?"

"Hey, it's me. Mrs Green and Mr Green junior just arrived to give their statements, I wanted to wait for you, are you coming?" Tim asked.

"Yeah, I'll be there soon," I said before I hung up. I turned towards my mother.

"I have to go, but if you find something please let me know. And tell Dad to relax a bit," I said before I kissed her cheek.

"I will do, goodluck," she called as I dashed to my car.

I could only hope the wife and son recalled something...
