Chapter 15

Victoria's POV

I spent a whole week pouring over each and every report. I went through it with a fine tooth comb looking for something that could help me find the real murderer. I only took a break whenever Alec stopped by to buy me coffee. He told me that he won't allow me to push people away like he did and thus we went out for coffee daily.

As I looked over the reports I came to the sudden realisation.

Mr Samuels was only charged with murder because his gun was found at the crime scene with his fingerprints on it. It might be possible that he was telling the truth about lending the gun to Mr Green. So of course his fingerprints will be on it and it will prove nothing.

The other thing that convinced the police of his guilt was that Mr Lock, the neighbour across the street saw him leaving the Green's house at that time of the murder and locking the door. The spare key of the Green's house was still not found. There was also no one that could confirm Mr Samuels story.

Mr Samuels claims that he did visit Mr Green, but only to ask him to talk to him what was going on. But when he left Mr Green was still alive and well.

So it was basically Mr Lock's word against Mr Samuels word. But Mr Lock proved a reliable witness. The only question was why didn't he say anything about seeing Mr Samuels sooner.

Then it struck me, what if Mr Lock wasn't a reliable witness. What if he lied? But why would he have to lie. I had to look deeper into Mr Lock, but to do that I needed some help. As I scrolled through my contacts my thumb landed on Jaydan's name. This would've been the time when I would've called him and asked him his opinion. But now I had to settle for my other partner.

I quickly dialled Tim's number.

"Hello?" He answered in two rings.

"Hey, are you busy at the moment?" I asked.

"No, I'm about to head out, do you want me to drop by?" He asked.

"Yes, please. I need your help with something," I said.

"Okay see in five," he said before he hung up.

Five minutes there was a knock on my door.

"Thank you for coming," I said as I invited Tim in.

"Woah," I heard his intake of breath as I closed the door behind him. When I turned around I saw what he was looking at. I had a board filled with pictures and papers were scattered everywhere.

"You've been busy," he said as he looked at everything.

"Yes, well I've been looking through the case again," I said.

"But we solved it, Mr Samuels trial is next week," he said.

"I know, but I just have a feeling that he is innocent," I said.

"Okay, if you believe that he is innocent than give me some reasons," he said.

"Take a seat and then I'll tell you what I thought," I said.

He took a seat on the couch after he moved a few papers.

"What are the two main reasons Mr Samuels is presumed guilty?" I asked.

"The gun that we found that belonged to him and an eyewitness account. Also he had an affair with the victim's wife," he said.

"Yes, lets say Mr Samuels was talking the truth about giving Mr Green the gun for his protection. So of course we will find both their fingerprints on the gun. That means we don't have physical evidence that he was at the crime. But we have an eyewitness who claimed that he saw Mr Samuels leaving the Green residence during the time of the murder. But how trustworthy is this Mr Lock? What do you know about Mr Lock?" I asked.

"Well I did check the guy out. He seems clean. He is a well respected physician. He moved here 1 year ago. His sister killed herself 14 years ago."

"Do you know why she committed suicide?" I asked.

"Well apparently her 4 year old son was kidnapped, she was mentally unstable and after the huge loss she suffered she blamed herself and took her own life," he explained.

"Did they ever find the boy?" I asked.

"Nope," he said.

"Do you have a picture of him?" I asked.

Tim quickly got his computer out before he went to a file and opened a missing person picture with a small boy's photo.

"Do you still have that ageing program on your laptop?" I asked.

"Yes, lets run it and see what we get," he said. When the picture was aged we both let out a gasp of shock.

"Is that-"

"Weston Green," I said.

"So Mr Lock moves here one year ago, he sees Weston and then decided to get his revenge?" Tim asked.

"Well if the police never found the boy, then that means there was no proof. So Mr Lock decided to take the law in his own hands and kills the person who destroyed his sister's life," I said.

"That is a good theory and all, but what proof do we have?" Tim asked.

"Maybe it is time we have a word with all the neighbours, maybe one of them remembered something too," I said.

Tim and I headed back to the Green's neighbourhood and knocked on every door. But every neighbour had the same story as the previous one, they saw nothing.

I was about to give up when I asked Tim where they found the gun. The dumpster was a few blocks away. I surveyed the area and just then I noticed the blinds of the house across the street was abruptly closed. That person looked very nosy so I thought that it was atleast worth a shot to ask the person if they saw something.

I headed to the house across the street. An old lady answered the door when I knocked on the door.

"Excuse me miss, I'm Detective Wills and was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?" I asked.

"I'll be glad to help," she said with a friendly smile.

"Did you hear about the murder a few weeks? The murder of Nathaniel Green?" I asked.

"Oh yes! Dreadful thing that happened and only a few blocks away," she said.

"Well the murder weapon was disposed of in that dumpster across the street, did you notice anything the night of the murder?" I asked hopeful.

"Is that what the police found there? I saw them there a few weeks ago and I wondered what caught their attention. Well if I knew that was what they found I would've told them weeks ago that I saw someone there the night before throwing something away," I wanted to scream with glee when I heard her say that.

"Could you see who it was? Was this the man?" I asked as I showed her a picture of Mr Samuels.

"No he doesn't look familiar," she said as she took a good look.

"How about this man?" I asked as I showed her the picture of John Locke.

"That's him! Those dark eyes looked truly haunting in the darkness."

"Are you sure it was him?" I asked.

"Yes. You see I have restless legs so I wake up regularly to walk around and stretch them a bit. When I got to the living room I heard something outside and thought it was the neighbours cat that was busy in my front garden again, but then I saw a man throwing away garbage. But I know all my neighbours and this man was a stranger." She explained.

"Thank you," I called Tim over and explained the situation to him. We took the lady, whose name was Ellie, to the police station with us to give us her formal report. While she was writing her report, Tim and I explained the new information we found to our captain.

Our captain was quite shocked when we finished our explanation and then he told us that he would like our eyewitness to identify Mr Lock so that we can get a warrant to search his house.

Tim called Mr Lock in under the pretense that he had to double check his report. We brought Ellie to the other side of the window and she immediately identified him as the man she saw disposing of garbage in her neighbourhood.

When she confirmed that it was the right man, the captain organised for a search warrant. I could only hope that we could find the evidence that we needed to put this man in prison.
