Chapter 1

Victoria's POV 5 years later

My lungs were burning as I ran as fast as I could to catch the perp that was running in front of me, I was so grateful that we had that excruciating training program I completed. I could hear the footsteps of my partner behind me. I cut past a corner where I found the perp trying to climb a fence luckily he was struggling so I quickly grabbed him and pulled him off. He fell to the ground before Tim, my partner, placed cuffs on his hands.

"Jon Patterson, you're under arrest for the murder of Sarah Lee," I said

As Tim brought him to his feet, I looked him in his eyes.

"You murdered your girlfriend, you thought she was cheating on you," I said.

"She did! She was receiving secret phone calls and messages and when I confronted her she kept denying it. I lost control and before I knew what happened she was laying on the ground in a puddle of blood," he said.

"She didn't cheat on you, she was busy organising a surprise gift for you. She was busy restoring your father's old Mustang," I explained and a look of complete horror crossed his face. At least he was ashamed of what he did. I started to read him his rights as Tim lead him away.

"You have the right to remain silence and everything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have a right to an attorney, if you can't afford one the state will provide you with one..."

By the time I was done, we made it to the squad car where two officers took him and placed him in the vehicle. I thanked them before Tim and I went to my car.

"Nice work, partner," Tim said as we climbed in the car.

"Nice work to you to, our first case solved. Can you believe it?" I asked as I put the car in gear and started to drive to the police station.

"No, I can't. But it is because of our incredible team work," he said with a boyish grin.

"Yes it is," I replied.

The rest of the drive was quiet and I thought about sharing my first case with Jaydan. When we arrived at the station my father, the new police commissioner, was waiting for us.

"Well done you two. This case was wrapped up nice and quick thanks to you," my father praised before he gave us our reports to finish. That was all I hated about this job. The loads and loads of paperwork.

While we were busy doing the paperwork I asked Tim about Gracie and her pregnancy. She was my best friend afterall and I was concerned about her health.

"She is doing great, the only complaint she has is the morning sickness. She says she feels like it is getting worse and worse," he said and I feel bad for her. Gracie and Tim were married two years now and they were expecting their first child. I introduced Gracie to Tim while we were still at the academy and it was love at first sight, or at least that is how they described it.

At 5 o'clock I was finally finished and off duty. I quickly told my captain and father that I was leaving before I greeted Tim.

"Send my regards to Gracie!" I said before I left.

On my way to my car I stopped by a deli around the corner that made Jaydan's favourite pastries. Cecelia, the deli owner, gave me a bright smile as I entered the shop.

"Good afternoon, Victoria," she greeted.

"Hi, I'm just here for some-" I started to say but she cut me off.

"Rozzoli and a custard slice with two donunts? Am I right? And two cuppucinos?" She asked and I give her a smile.

"On the dot," I said as she started to collect my items.

"So how is the big Mr CEO? I don't see him in here so often anymore," she said. I remember how Jaydan and I found this place three years back and visited it almost every Friday afternoon. But then life got busy like it usually does and I only pop in here when I have the time.

"He's great, just busy. You know how life can be," I said earnestly.

"I do," she said before she places my paper bag and two cuppucinos on the counter.

I quickly take out the money and hand it over before I take my bag and cuppucinos.

"Thank you, have a nice day!" I greet before I leave the deli and cross the road to my car. I place everything on the passenger seat before I put my car in drive and ride to Stewart Industries.

Luckily for me I got a parking right in front of the building. After grabbing everything I need including the delecacies I bought I entered the building.

Penny was sitting at the front desk when I entered.

"Good afternoon, Ms Wills. Here to see Mr Stewart?" She asked with a friendly smile.

"Yes, is he still here?" I asked.

"Yes he is," she said and I thanked her before I made my way to the elevator. Thank goodness for the elevator because after a day like today, the last thing I wanted to do was climb the stairs.

DING!

The elevator stops and doors are opened.  I walk to Jaydan's personal assistant and secretary, Alicia's desk where she is busy typing away on her computer.

"Don't tell me he gave you all of his work to do," I said causing the poor woman to jump in fright. She obviously didn't hear me coming.

"Oh Victoria, it's you! You scared me there for a minute," she said as she placed a hand on her chest.

"Sorry, I thought you heard the elevator and my loud stomping," I told her.

"No, I guess I was to busy with work. I guess you're here to see Jaydan. Mr Williams is with him right now," she said. Alec was here. After being shot Alec started to become closer to me and Jaydan. He apologized for his behaviour and we've been attached to the hip since. Jaydan was truly grateful for having his friend back and so was I.

"I will just ask him if it is okay, I know he doesn't mind you barging in, but it is my job and-" she rambles but I quickly stop her.

"I know you're just doing your job," she gives me a relieved smile before she presses a button.

"Mr Stewart, Victoria is here to see you," she said before I heard Jaydan say 'send her in.'

She releases the button before she smiles at me. I return the smile and walk to the door.

Upon entering I notice Alec sitting across Jaydan in one of the desk chairs. He looks very calm and relaxed and only looks around when Jaydan smiles at me and stands up.

"Hey Love, what are you doing here?" Jaydan asked as he walks over to me before hugging me.

"Well, I solved my first case and I thought we can celebrate it," I said as I held up the paper bag and coffee.

"You went to our deli, thank you. And congratulations on your first solved case," he said before kissing me.

I hear a throat clear and know it is Alec that is feeling left out.

"I know he gets precedence and all but you're my best friend to," Alec said with a pout. I couldn't help but laugh at the way he pulls his face.

He comes over and I hug him to. I missed having my best friend. And it's just a perk that he is my boyfriend's best friend too.

"Well seeing as you two have plans, I'll be going. Enjoy your afternoon and see you guys around," Alec said before he leaves me and Jaydan alone.

"So what did you get?" Jaydan asked as he grabbed the bag from my hands.

"Ooh my favourite. You know me to well," he said as he went back to his chair. Once he was seated he digs in.

"Hey! Some of that is for me too. It was me who solved the case afterall," I said as I grabbed a doughnut and sat back in a chair.

"Excuse me Miss Case-solver," he said as he sticks out his tongue.

"Mature. Real mature," I said trying my best not to laugh.

"Don't you know it," he said with his usual flirtatious wink.

"So how was your day?" I asked.

"Busy, but not as exciting as yours. So how do you feel about your first case?"

"I'm glad that it is over, but this case made me sad. Sarah Lee had her whole life in front of her," I said as I think about the young girl who was murdered at the age of 25, only 2 years older than me.

Jaydan places his hand over mine, "At least you can give her parents and loved ones a bit closure."

"Yeah, that is why I wanted to do this job. To catch the bad guy and help the victims," I said.

"And you did. So at what time should we be at your parents tonight?" Jaydan asked and I give him a perplexed look before I remember that my parents invited us over as well as Jaydan's parents.

"Oh no," I said with a groan as I place my hand on my head.

"You forgot didn't you?" He asked.

"Yes..."

"Well you were busy with a case, so I can understand that," he said as he starts to pack away his stuff. When I look at my watch, I noticed that it was already 6 o'clock.

"If I remember correctly she asked us to be there at seven, so are you ready to go? We can stop at your apartment and then leave your car and drive with mine?" He asked and I nodded. I quickly help Jaydan to clean his desk before we gather our things and leave.

Jaydan and I greet Alicia as we pass her, she's still busy working and I feel sorry for her.

"Why is she still working?" I asked Jaydan once the elevator doors closed in front of us.

"She recently found out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her and now she is throwing herself in her work. She even asked me if it is alright if she could stay to work later," he explained and I feel my heartache for her. Finding out that the person you love is cheating on you must be the worst pain in the world.

"Poor girl," I said.

"Yeah...you know I would never do that, don't you?" He asked and my eyes snaps to his, completely caught of guard with his question.

"Where did that come from?" I asked.

"I was just worried that you might have doubts and I wanted to reassure you and-" I quickly cut him off.

"Jay, that thought has never crossed my mind. I trust you and I know you love me and besides I know you won't risk it, I know to much of your secrets," I said with an evil smile.

"Oh really, like what?" He asked. I quickly take out my necklace that is hidden under my shirt. The necklace he gave me five years ago.

"You still wear that?" He asked with disbelief.

"Of course, it's my favourite necklace," I said as I gave him a smile.

He gave me a peck on the lips, "I love you so much, Vic."

Just then the doors open and we both go our seperate ways as we head for our own cars. Jaydan follows behind me as we drive to my apartment. Once we arrived I quickly tell Jaydan that I just want to fetch a jacket and will be back down in a second.

I quickly hurry to my apartment, I switch on the lights after I unlocked the door and rush to my closet to get a jacket. I was afraid that it might get colder tonight. Just as I was on my way out I spot a small yellow piece of paper. The same yellow piece of paper I've been receiving the last five years ever since that day I found that note on my windshield. My heart started to beat on its own accord as I pick up the letter.

I hope you enjoyed your donuts and coffee

One sentence sent me in a state of panic. No matter how many times I got these letters here and there disclosing information about things I've done or been doing, I still was freaked out with the idea that someone out there was watching me, someone who knew Jaydan's secret. This person loved playing games with me and I didn't know what he wanted. Why was he doing this?

I was so upset that I didn't even hear Jaydan enter my apartment.

"Vic!" I jump in fright at his sudden voice.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, but I called you like three times. Are you okay?" He asked and I plaster a smile on my face.

"Yes,"

"What's that?" He asked as he indicates the note in my hand.

"Oh this is just another random advertisement," I quickly said before I crumble the piece of paper and throw it away in the dustbin. I look down at the jacket in my hand and see that it was the wrong one.

"Sorry, I grabbed the wrong jacket, I'm just going to grab another one," I said before I hurried to my room to get another jacket. I just needed a second to school my features. I hated not telling Jaydan about this, but I didn't want to worry him. This was probably a very harmless prankster trying to rile me up. But deep down inside I knew I was only lying to myself.
