4 Busy Life
POV Jack
"No, no, no!" North exhaled in his deep accent.
"The musical can't go like this! Bunnymund try to hop and not bounce! But great job little eggies!" North cheered.
"We really need Manny back from his trip. North's a tyrant when it comes to pulling the show together," Bunny sighed and leaned against an eastern island statue replica.
"Cheer up, I'm sure that the show will be great and fun," I told him and flashed a wide smile.
"To you everything is fun Jack but Guardians of Childhood has been a yearly show for who knows how long... still dunno why Manny chose a newbie like you in the team as new addition," Bunny muttered and crossed his paws.
"And stop grinning and making fun of my suit mate," he hummed and took his bunny head off.
I stared eye to eye at the strong Australian guy as North kept chatting with the people who were acting as the easter eggs in the show.
"Aster don't be such a grumpy pants," Toothiana giggled and jumped to hug Bunnymund who immediately turned red.
"Your dress is quite sparkly Tooth," I chuchkled.
"Oh! Haha! You like it?! " Toothiana cheered and came to me, she spin around in front of me and when the stage lights hit on her green purple above knee length dress the crystals on it sparkled like real diamonds.
"Yeah, it suits you," I grinned and crossed my arms.
"Oi! Stop flirting with my girlfriend," Aster hissed and pulled Tooth to his embrace. She giggled warmly in his arms.
I lift my hands up, "Calm down. I'm not flirting with her."
"Aaah! There's that beautiful smile!" Toothiana exhaled and I blushed slightly when she stared at my teeth.
"Calm down sugar," Bunny hummed and kissed her cheek.
The practice was over from today and I place my G ended wooden staff back to the stage equipment. Then I take off the brown cape from my shoulders.
"Are you still suspecting our newbie?" North laughed behind of me and I gulped.
"Why not? He is new and might try to steal my girl," Aster mumbled and swayed Tooth around.
"Chill, I have someone..." I said seriously, "Tooth's just a friend? Right?"
"Yeah! Ever since I saw his teeth when I went to recognize him in the morgue," Tooth announced.
"Ah, yes... you really love teeth," North laughed and I take out my phone.
There's still some time before my first night shift. I feel a pull of my sleeve and I glance to my left where Sandy is at.
'Everything fine?'
He wrote on paper because he was mute.
"Perfect," I reply quietly and show thumbs up.
It has been roughly four months from the accident that changed everything. In the eyes of everyone my old self was dead like I asked Toothiana to announce. She was rather surprised when the corpse that she went to identify suddenly sat up on the surgical table of the mortuary gasping.
I was never the same after that day. These people who have a hobby of acting to raise money for children's hospitals took me under their wing. I can't bring myself up to the people who were once my family, to them I was dead after all and I can't face them until everything is settled.
"Well, I'll get going! My janitor duties are calling!" I cheered when I took my bag.
"Bye Jack!" They cheered in unison as I rushed out from the theater.
I grabbed the black motorcycle which I borrowed from babe. The helmet smelled like him which was kind of obvious. It was much easier and faster to get from theater to hospital with motorcycle than to commute.
When I parked in the employee only parking lot under the hospital I took my engagement ring from my finger and put it inside my pocket. Before I went to work we discussed a lot of when we would have the wedding. Honestly I don't know, everything feels slightly confusing. Again I asked for more time to figure things out but I got a lecture of how we should book the catering, wedding place and who knows what for year beforehand at least.
In the parking hall I could smell the fumes which came from cars as well as the rubber of their tires. After I hang the helmet to the motorcycle I began to head towards the staircase. A car was coming from nearby and I heard it.
Suddenly the staircase door was slammed open and I saw someone running out while talking to phone and wearing earplug. She was too busy to notice the approaching car until it was too late.
"HEY!" I shouted and ran towards the woman and I tackled her just before the car would've hit her. The breaks of the car screeched.
"You can't just rush out from somewhere without looking," I hissed while panting.
"Wow! Are you both alright?" The car driver came to check us.
"I am... how about?" I exhaled and I startled when I glanced back at the woman who was still under me. She had lifted the French braid off from covering her face.
"I am better if you get off," Dr. Redel hummed but seemed a bit startled too.
"Phew! It was so close..." the car driver gasped.
"Sorry...I was talking to a colleague and trying to find my car keys..." Dr. Redel sighed and I helped her up.
The car driver left shortly and I glance at Dr. Redel.
"I wonder which one of us is more reckless," I hummed and then I sighed when I saw my lunch box on the ground. The cafeteria was already closed and my night snack was spread on the pavement. I should've closed up the zipper after putting the keys there.
"Well thank you for helping me," Dr. Redel hummed and watched how I scraped the sandwich from the ground and threw it to nearby garbage.
"No problem," I mumbled and headed towards the staircase door.
"You have night shift?" She asked all of a sudden and I pause.
"I do."
"That was your food?"
"Doh?"
"Ah... how old are you even..." she groaned and came to me. She was looking through her bag and then she pulled out a wrapped sandwich.
"23?" I replied sarcastically.
"I meant that you're childish--," she sighed and gave me the sandwich, "—here... take this as a thank you. I guess that I have to cook something tonight when I go home... it's from my sisters sandwich stall. You know, the one that's outside the hospital. Of course they have left home already but she usually brings me a sandwich before going home."
"Ah, then it should be one to my taste if you're her sister," I grinned and put the sandwich inside my bag.
Dr. Redel frowned, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"That's a secret--," I winked my eye, "—plus I gotta go... running late!"
I rushed up the stairs quickly. This was actually a nice gesture from her which was rather surprising – though she called me childish.
Once I got my things in the locker and the sandwich to fridge I bumped into someone who I haven't met yet.
"Hey, name's Jack and I'm the new janitor," I smiled and gave my hand to shake to the tall man with brown hair and brown eyes and a goat beard.
"Eugene Fitzherbert. I work as a night guard here," he smiled and shook my hand.
"Oh so you're Rapunzel's fiancé?" I hummed. Rapunzel had talked about him a lot.
"Yeah," he laughed and rubbed his neck.
"Wanna chat more at the break? I really need to see what is needed to do before I get nagging from...people," I laughed and he agreed.
"Mmh... I need to check the yard now but see you in couple hours in the break room?" Eugene suggested and I nodded.
My broom was waiting for me but instead of cleaning up I decided to go and fix up few things. Like couple toilets and change some lights to working ones. They were pretty easy tasks to do before my break.
"Okay, I think I got it all," I hummed after I had finished changing a light bulb in the corridor.
I climbed down the ladders and closed them up. While walking I passed a children ward and I could see into one room through a window. For a moment I paused, there were still lights on and one girl seemed like she was crying and other three were comforting her.
These wards seemed pretty lonely to me, also the visiting hours had passed and midnight was closing in.
Without thinking much longer I knocked the door and placed my ladder against the wall before entering.
"Hey, I saw you guys here all gloomy and I wanted to check if something is the matter?" I said friendly and the three kids looked at me but still the girl was crying.
"She misses her mom... we all do," a boy said. He was really pale looking and no more than 12 years old from the looks of it.
"I want mom," she cried.
"Ah... she's new when it comes to being in hospital," a ten year old looking girl said.
"I've been here a lot... I don't like being in here but she doesn't stop crying," a younger boy said and I approached them.
Finally I sat on the edge of the bed where the girl was still sobbing.
"Y-you're not telling us to get into bed?" the younger boy asked and glanced at me.
"Nah... if you're well enough to be brave and comfort her... then it's fine," I hummed and messed up his hair.
"Who are you?" the older girl asked and I look at her.
"Jack Frost, I work as a janitor in this hospital," I explained.
"Why aren't you working?" She questioned again and made me to laugh.
"Oh, you sure remind me of someone... my break starts in a bit and I just finished fixing up stuff," I grinned and then I turned to look at the still crying little girl.
"You dance while cleaning mister?" A boy suddenly grinned.
"Yup, have you seen it?" I chuckled and all three of them nodded.
"It looks stupid," the older girl scoffed.
"I think it's funny," the youngest boy said.
I laughed and took my phone out. After I unplugged the headphones I put some music playing and I hopped to the floor and began dancing. The kids began to laugh while watching me and it made me happy. When they clapped their hands together I danced to the pace of that and they were thrilled when I took some medical objects from the room as a part of my dance.
I bowed to them after the song was over. They clapped and I glance at the girl who had been crying, she was wiping her tears away.
"I'm not the best dancer but it was fun," I cheered happily when I sat on the bed. All four of them were already on it.
"My name is Sofia," the girl sobbed and lifted her tiny head up. I wiped away her tears and suddenly she hugged me.
"Hey Sof, you miss your parents huh?" I hummed and hugged her back and she nodded.
"We all do," the young boy said and I pulled all of them into the same hug.
These kids were cancer patients.
"So what would you say if I visit you guys every day?" I asked from them.
"Can we dance too?" Sofie smiled a bit.
"Sure you can--," I began but the door opened.
There was a grumpy looking nurse who had her arms crossed.
"They have bedtime now Mr Frost and I think you have things to do..." the nurse sighed and I smiled to the kids.
"Good night!" I cheered to the kids and winked my eye before saying really quietly, "—see you tomorrow."
The nurse tucked the kids back in their beds and the worst homesickness seemed to have passed by now. A while later the nurse caught up with me in the corridor while I was carrying the ladders back to the janitors closer.
"Jack, what you did was great... I don't like hospitals seen as scary and boring and sad places," she sighed and I agreed with her.
"But I have to be strict or the kids won't listen to me," the nurse laughed slightly.
"True... so you weren't too mad?" I grinned.
"No but please not so close to patients bedtime. They need rest," she smiled and played with her necklace.
"What's your name? I haven't seen you here before," I questioned.
"My name is Pocahontas. I visited my homeland for few months," she smiled. She had tanned skin, brown eyes and long black hair tied to ponytail.
Sometime later I met up with Eugene at the break room. He was already eating and I grabbed the sandwich from fridge. It was exactly the way I usually like my sandwiches so the sandwich stall seller Anna wasn't lying when she said that her sister, Dr. Redel, likes her sandwiches the same as I.
"Has the night gone by smoothly?" Eugene asked while munching some chips.
"Yeah it has... I saw some kids who I cheered up a bit," I hummed and took a sip from my water bottle.
"Nice. So do you date anyone?" Eugene asked and grinned mischievously. Here comes the regular guy talk I assume.
"Kind of – we're engaged. He has been there for me for a long time," I replied.
"Wow... so... as a he..." Eugene blinked.
"As in a he – a guy... but please keep it to yourself, I don't like going out shouting of my personal life," I smiled faintly and Eugene nodded.
"Are you embarrassed or...why not?" Eugene coughed and drank some soda from a can.
"Nah but personal stuff is personal stuff for me. I wouldn't give you my phone number either," I hummed and took another bite from my sandwich.
"You wouldn't?" Eugene gasped a bit shocked which made me laugh.
"I barely know you dude. Maybe later... hmm... I wanted to ask that how are you dealing with wedding planning? You're engaged with Punz, right?" I questioned.
"Wow... all the nurses are going crazy over you and you're...uh... oh... Punz and I? Well she mostly does the planning and I just try to keep the wedding day free, go to the dress fittings and cake tastings and such...." Eugene laughed nervously.
"I'm what?" I asked.
"G-gay? "Eugene gulped and seemed embarrassed over what he said.
"Mm... well I don't like to be put in category but I guess I am right now... I think that if I like some person, then the gender doesn't matter. He happened to be cool and we work together well," I shrugged.
"What does it feel to kiss another guy?" Eugene asked curiously and I chuckled.
"Want to try?" I winked my eye playfully and I barely managed to grab a hold of his chair before he would've fallen with it. "Chill, I was just kidding... and I don't know. I have never kissed anyone," I wondered.
"You are odd," Eugene frowned.
"Aren't we all?" I replied and finished eating.
"Thanks for the advice by the way," I said and broke the silence.
After that Eugene managed to chat with me casually. We were getting along well great but I kept wondering if I should let babe handle the wedding stuff like Eugene let Rapunzel handle it. Babe was a cool guy indeed but a bit hasty and I am not quite sure if this is really what I want.
When the morning came the shifts changed and I would finally get to go home to rest. To my own room right next to his – for reasons. I want to wait for marriage before we...err...
In the parking lot I heard some footsteps that seemed to follow me. When I got to the motorcycle I noticed something.
"Yo, kiddo come forth," I called and stared at the location where I had seen a shadow moving.
A while later I see how the kid called Hiro came from behind the cars. It had been some time since he had been in the hospital and threatened me.
"You aren't normal are you?" Hiro asked and leaned against a car next to my babe's motorcycle.
"Depends what you think of as normal," I replied with a smile as I sat on the motorbike.
"Why didn't you admit that you were there that day Jack...or should I call you--," Hiro snapped and pulled out a picture.
"Hmh... I was there when the fire happened, yes," I hummed to him and I look at the picture.
"You knew my brother... Tadashi... did you kill him? Who started the fire?" He asked quickly and I look at the picture where a tall black haired man who resembled a lot of Hiro was holding his arm over my shoulders.
"Ah... I didn't kill him and unfortunately I don't know how the fire began, Tadashi was a great guy... And now what? Since I told you this?" I questioned and handed the picture back to him.
"How did you know Tadashi?" He asked and stared at me. I could see the thirst for vengeance from his eyes.
"I can't tell you but we worked on something. Excuse me but I need to go," I said as I put my helmet on.
"I will find out who did it! And kill them! Just know that...if you had your hands in this..." he yelled at me as I started the motorcycle.
"I didn't but be careful and it's best if you stop investigating," I shouted as I drove away from the parking hall.
POV Rapunzel
When I came to work this morning I nearly bumped into Jack in the staircase. He greeted me and I greeted him back. He didn't seem that tired though it had been his first night shift.
The feeling of Eugene's kiss to my lips still seems to be there. As usual he had been waiting me in front of dressing room when I come to morning shift and he is finishing off his night guards job.
"Punzie? Are you awake?" Elsa asked and looked at me.
"Oh right!" I gasped and grabbed a needle and string which I gave to Elsa.
She began to stitch the wound that came from when Elsa took a tissue sample from a patient. It would be sent to pathology to be examined to see if there are any changes that could point towards cancer.
"The results will come in couple weeks," Elsa explained to the patient while I was bandaging the tiny wound area.
"Thank you," the patient said.
"Here are the instructions of how to be with the wound at home," Elsa said and gave the patient a piece of paper.
When the patient left I began to clean up the equipment and Elsa was writing down the operation to patient file on the computer.
"Sorry Els, I was just too happy," I sighed while I collected the instruments to a box to be sent to be sterilized.
"Mm... Eugene again?" Elsa asked and finished writing her report.
"Yup! He kissed me," I cheered and smiled widely.
"How wonderful but you've been together for quite some time. Don't let it affect to your work too much," Elsa said and got up from her chair. She was helping me out with the equipment unlike most doctors do. We would have lunch together.
"You should go on a date, this fluttering sensation is so funny," I giggled a bit and Elsa laughed.
"I'm married to my job. I can't and it would distract me from studying and working," she exhaled.
"But please say that you'll come to the Halloween party of the staff?" I asked concerned.
"Eh... maybe? If I don't have a shift," Elsa hummed.
Halloween would be in less than two months. Everyone would dress up and have fun and I had asked from Dr. Burgess that Elsa would be free that day.
"Good," I grinned. She surely wouldn't have a shift.
"What's with that look?" She frowned and looked a bit concerned.
"No-ooo-thing! Perhaps you'll find a handsome doctor to flirt with," I winked my eye and Elsa blushed.
"I don't flirt," she muttered and took her gloves off. We had just finished up with the cleaning.
"Hmm... but you are always chatting with the janitor, Jack? He is a nice guy. I heard that he is acting to raise money for kids hospital and he is good looking... Eugene sure can be happy that he was there first," I chuckled.
"Punz, that's harsh for Eugene... and I don't chat with him – I'm scolding him for slacking off," Elsa laughed and covered her mouth a bit.
"But--," I hummed.
"He is too young, reckless and doesn't know what responsibilities mean. I can't see myself with a guy like him... but he is handsome I must agree," she told me and I saw her blushing.
"HA! BLUSH!" I cheered victoriously and pointed at her face.
"Allergic reaction..." she muttered.
"Definitely not! Jack ! JACK!" I continued teasing her and she turned redder.
"Gah, fine... I might have some fun with him but nothing serious but I won't since I don't have time to play around unlike he does," she said seriously. "This is just natural human reaction when they see attractive opposite side of sex representative," she hummed and pointed at her blushed cheeks.
"You just didn't throw in scientific facts of love...did you?" I looked at her with bored look.
"Ah! Not love! Sexual attraction," Elsa insisted and I rolled my eyes.
"He is not my type.. believe me," Elsa mumbled.
"Mmhmm... sooo who is?" I asked while we were leaving from the room. We took the used equipment to sterilization room on our way to cafeteria.
"My type... hard working, good looking and fit and doesn't annoy me," Elsa told me and I sighed.
"Personality?" I continued. This was like finding bread crumbs from a basket full of sand.
"Never thought of it... as I said I don't have time for relationships at the moment," she said and I rolled my eyes a bit.
"Promise me one thing Elsa? " I hummed.
"What?" She asked and stopped. Her hands were inside the pockets of her white doctor's coat.
"When someone asks you for a dance in the Halloween party... accept it without thinking too much?" I pleaded.
Elsa stared at me for a moment until her narrow lips moved to a smile. "I guess I can do that," she told me and I squealed slightly.
"Elsa! Punz! Come on, there's some stew today for lunch--," Hiccup cheered from the cafeteria's doorway. He had stopped there to wait for us. "And some chocolate cake for dessert," he added and Elsa's steps immediately fastened when she heard the word – chocolate.
