Secrets - Oh Il-nam x Grandchild!Reader

Author's note: Here is a Oneshot with the wholesome Oh Il-nam...such a sweet soul.

Please forgive my late posting. I had some Wattpad errors :(

"It was a dark and cold night-"

"-What nonsense are you reading to me now?" Your grandfather coughs out, giving you an odd look. A laugh escapes your lips.

"It's called 100 horror stories, and you asked me to read this to you-"

"- are you trying to kill me faster than my brain tumour?" You playfully roll your eyes. "Grandfather, you asked me to read this to you..." The realisation hits him.

"Oh," He chuckles, which is followed by a cough. You sit up from your lying position next to your grandfather and immediately hand him a glass of room temperature water.

"You are too kind to me, young one," He sighs after taking a small sip of water. You give him a gentle nudge.

"Of course, grandfather, you need someone who can be there for you, especially when you need it most," A small smile forms on your lips. Il-nam loved you, and if anything, you were his most prized possession. His only grandchild and currently the only person that takes care of him. Your pure heart made him proud of the person you grew up to be.

Sometimes you would share secrets, except certain ones.

"Grandfather...why is it that you don't want to go to a hospital? You wouldn't be lonely, and there would be better doctors to look after you.." This thought had been eating up at you. Every time you would mention this, Il-nam would avoid answering. Hopefully, this time he can answer.

"..you are here. The best doctor in Seoul, I don't need a hospital or other doctors," He was right. You were Oh Y/n, rated the best and most efficient brain surgeon in all of Seoul, but with such a great status comes sacrifice. There was no time for a life outside of your career. No relationships, no vacations and no friends.

However, you didn't mind. You had your grandfather, who was your closest confidant. It hit you hard when you found out he had a brain tumour.

"But-"

"-Can you continue reading? I need a story before I fall asleep," He cuts you off. You laugh softly and begin reading.

"..not only was it raining, but a shadow lurked behind the rugged blemished tree..." Your voice faded out as Il-nam dozed off to your calming tone.

...

"Is everything prepared?" You hear your grandfather's voice from the other side of the closed door.

Someone was with him.

Today you were going to have another check-up on your grandfather, and the results were better than you expected. Even though the tumour was still there and he needed to take it easy, he could be more active. This relieved you, but you weren't expecting Il-nam to have any guests.

"Yes, sir, just say the word-" The sound of you opening the door cuts off the unknown guest. A large smile forms on Il-nam's face at the sight of you, and you straighten your white coat.

"Ahh, Y/n..tell me you have great news?" He asks, gesturing you to a seat beside his bed, to which you comply.

"Well..." You turn to face the stranger, who had a pitch-black suit on with a straight face.

"Don't worry about In-ho. He works with me," Il-nam clarifies.

"Alright then," You clear your throat. "Grandfather, I received your updated results, and you can be more active now, but because of your brain and the possible case of dementia, I recommend counting in ones at least as often as possible. Other than that, nothing extremely terrible,"

"That's great!" You jump slightly at your grandfather's excited tone, but immediately you smile after.

"See In-ho, and everything worked out. Now the plans can go smoothly," Il-nam chuckles, although you raise an eyebrow.

"What are you talking about, grandfather?" You ask him curiously, ignoring the man beside you who is watching you with interest.

"So counting will help me forget less?" Il-nam changes the topic. You sighed, hoping his dementia isn't getting worse or the results were incorrect. Although you didn't know the dark secret your grandfather kept, and he wanted it to stay that way, at least until needed, he acted as though he forgot your questions that revolved around specific topics, especially the questions about his career.

"Yes, grandfather. Counting objects or even people will be helpful," you purse your lips.

"Then I'll be going on vacation for some time," You blink at the words your grandfather said.

"When I mentioned that you can be active, I didn't mean leave where I can't check up on yo-"

"-It's okay. Ms Y/n, I'll be accompanying him on his vacation, but I'll bring him once a week to have his check-ups since we will still be in South Korea," In-ho gives you a tight-lipped smile. However, you don't return it, as you trying to process what is even going on. It must be because of the fatigue that is gradually overtaking your body.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know if I can trust you..." You trail off. Even if your grandfather said he works with this In-ho person, it doesn't mean you should depend on him to keep the person you held dear safe.

"Why don't you join us, hm?" The tired voice of Il-nam catches your attention.

"Sir, I don't thin-"

"Nonsense, Y/n is my granddaughter, and it's only fair that she deserves to know the truth. My time is running out anyway,"

...

You entered a building, still wearing your white coat since you had no time to change. Your grandfather walked beside you as you both followed In-ho to a room that was extremely big with large monitors on the walls and men in pink suits and black masks.

"What's this?" You chime in, curious at where you are.

"This is where we watch the players play the games," In-ho informs you. Specific monitors grab your attention, more so what's on them.

Dozens of men and women are lying unconscious in separate beds being changed into teal tracksuits.

What in the world...?

"Wh-what is going on...?" Your voice shakes as you turn to your grandfather, who has a smile on his face. It was disconcerting.

"These are people who needed assistance, and that's what we're doing," You gulp at this.

"What do you mean by needed assistance,"

"Each person here requires money, they're lowlife's who are swimming in debt, and we are here to allow them to pay it off..."

"How?"

"By playing my favourite childhood games," Il-nam cuts in. Your eyebrows furrow at this. That's it?

"Why not just give them the money?"

"If we gave each person here the exact money they owe to pay off their debt, would they pay off their debt, or would they waste it?"

You don't answer, Il-nam chuckles softly, already expecting not to answer.

"But isn't this illegal?" Your curiosity gets the better of you.

"Everyone there was invited to play these games, and we told them the rules. This isn't wrong," In-ho tells you. You sigh.

Everything about this doesn't seem right.

A guard with a square-shaped mask enters the monitor room and walks towards the three of you.

"Sir, it'll be an hour until they wake up. Your uniform is waiting, Mr Oh."

"What does he mean?" You ask.

"It means I should get going," The guard escorts your grandfather out of the room, leaving you in a large computer room with tense and confused silence. You tried to dissect the information you received but didn't know what to make of it. A hand is gently placed on your shoulder, giving you a comforting squeeze.

"I know it's a lot to process now, but it means a lot to Mr Oh that you're here," In-ho clears his throat. He knew that this shocked you, especially when you just found out that your grandfather hid such a secret from you.

"It doesn't bother me that he kept this secret from me. He has his reasons, but he isn't in the condition to participate in something like this. What if something happens and I can't get to him?"

Perhaps you were a bit bothered at the fact that your grandfather was behind something that had people who were in debt and had them play games just for money...but his health was your top priority, and you couldn't lose him.

"Would you prefer having a closer eye on him?" You instantly nod your head, not thinking twice. In-ho grabs something that you now notice a guard was holding, and he holds it out to you.

It was a black mask with a triangle-shaped outline.

"What's this?" You ask as you slowly reach for the mask.

"An opportunity to keep a close eye on your grandfather," Before you take the mask, you instantly stop.

"What's the catch?" You receive a chuckle in response. Of course, you wouldn't easily say yes, as much as you trusted your grandfather, the secret he unveiled to you recently made you cautious.

"There is no catch. I'll have a guard explain everything to you, trust me, this is The safest way you can take to keep an eye on your grandfather,"

It was off the way In-ho told you. Why did he say the safest? Is there something dangerous in these games? You release a deep sigh and grab the mask. Thoughts roam your mind at the possibilities and outcomes of the choice you are about to make.

"Alright, what do I need to do?"
