Five: Emma
I didn't know houses could be this big. And somehow it keeps getting bigger. The more rooms Samantha shows me the farther my jaw drops. It's a two-floor house with a basement, but the basement is off limits. The main floor is open concept with the dinning room, kitchen and living room. There's also not one, but two bathrooms down there with two studies. But Samantha says one is used for storage. How can people have room for a storage room in their house?
The upper level, which you can get to by either stairs or an elevator. An elevator? Who has an elevator in their house? Why do they have one? Anyways, the upper level has all the bedrooms and the full bathrooms. Even a playroom/game room for the children. Samantha shows me the play/game room first as it's closet to the stairs. It's huge, with a corner filled with toys, an L shaped sofa and a wall-sized holo tv. Against the wall with the door is a display case with all their games and movies. My mouth drops at the sight of it.
"You still have dvds?" I run my fingers along the spines of their cases.
Samantha shrugs. "My father collects them."
I raise a brow and turn to face her. "Your father? Really? I thought for sure he'd be the type to throw old stuff out."
She shakes her head. "Nope. Not vintage technology at least. That's what fills up most of the storage room. Mother hates it." She smirks as she explains the last part.
"Sounds like you enjoy annoying your mom."
Her smile drops. "Why would you say that?"
"Oh? You don't enjoy bugging her?" I drop my hand back to my side.
"I mean... I don't not like bugging her." She rubs her arm and tears her gaze from mine.
"Is that so?" A sly smile sneaks onto my face. It is so easy to bug this girl.
"Are you done yet?"
Samantha jumps towards the door where her little brother sticks his head in. He gives her a set of puppy dog eyes. "I wanna show Emma my room!"
Samantha sighs and turns to me. "You heard him. After he shows you his room I'll take you to yours."
I nod. "Thanks."
Jax runs into the room and grabs my hand. "Come on, Emma!"
I laugh. "I'm coming! I'm coming!"
I let Jax hold my hand as he leads me to his room. The doors slide open in silence, and just as we step in the lights turn on. My mouth drops open. They have automatic lights? I wish. He drops my hand and runs to his bed, not even hesitating before jumping on to it and continuing his bounces on it. He throws his arms open. "Welcome to Jax's kingdom!"
My mouth continues to hang open. This kid is spoiled. He's got toys spilled around the floor. On one side is a dollhouse and on the other is a huge race track for toy cars. In the middle of his room are some bean bags sitting around a gaming console. I wish I could have had even half this set-up when I was his age.
"Wanna see the best part?" he asks. He hops off his bed and heads to the walling beside his bed. He presses a panel. Before I can ask what he's doing the panel slips away to reveal a candy stash. He spins around, a kiddy wicked grin on his face. "Want some?"
I shake my head. My voice is lost somewhere between my childhood and his room. Does he even realize how lucky he is? Probably not. "This is amazing, Jax, but I think I'm going to go find Samantha and get her to show me my room. Okay?"
His smile drops and he hangs his head. Please don't pull out the puppy dog eyes. But instead he waddles over to me and places his head against my leg. Then he turns up. "Please don't leave." He juts out his bottom lip.
Maybe that's worse than puppy dog eyes. "I'm not leaving," I explain to him. "I'll come back and play with you later, okay? I just want to get my room set-up and have just as cool a room as you."
He laughs. "That's funny. No one can beat my room!" He puffs out his chest.
I try to hide the cringe from him. "You're right buddy. But I gotta try, right?"
He seems to think that over before nodding. "I guess. I'll come judge your room later!" Then he's turning away from me and racing to his cars.
I keep a tight smile on my face until I'm out of his room and leaning against the cold wall. He doesn't realize how lucky he is. Doesn't realize how many kids would love to have a room like his. Doesn't realize how many kids don't even have their own room. And there he is, just sitting and saying no one's room is better than his. I take a shuddering breath. Is that how he'll grow up? Always seeing himself as best and never worrying about how others suffer? A gasp escapes me. Is that really what this innocent kid will grow into? A selfish greedy monster?
"Emma?"
My eyes fly open and settle on Samantha. She's changed into a pair of tights, that really complement her curves and a crop top. Her blond hair no longer hangs around her shoulder and is instead held high in a ponytail. I cough and nod. "I'm fine," I croak.
She raises an eyebrow. "You sure?"
I look over my shoulder, back at Jax's room. Am I sure? No. But will Samantha understand? I look at her, in her fancy work out clothes. How much did they cost her? Has she even thought of how others are struggling? Probably not. "I'm fine," I reassure, because she won't understand. She never will.
She nods, her lips tight. "Are you wanting to see your room?"
I nod. "Please."
She shrugs. "Sure. It's just this way." She turns and heads closer to the stairs, her hair swinging from side to side as she walks. I scramble to follow after her. "Your suitcase is already in the room. Jax put it in there for you." She looks over her shoulder at me.
"I'll make sure to thank him," I mumble.
She stops, and I struggle to stop myself before I can bump into her. "This is it."
The door slides open, just as quiet as every other door in this house. At least it'll be easy to sneak around. I sigh in relief when I see how simple the room is. Just a dresser with a tv on it, a desk, a closet, a bathroom and a bed. A few pictures of fields and flowers hang around the room. The floor to ceiling windows are covered with white lace curtains.
"I'll let you unpack," Samantha says. "If you need me I'll just be down the hall, by Jax's room in the gym."
My eyes widen. "You guys have a gym?"
She nods.
"What don't you have?"
A smile flickers on her face. "A pool."
I roll my eyes. Of course she's serious about it. "Thanks," I tell her.
"No problem. And, welcome to the Mars' household." She steps out of the room, still staring at me until the door closes. I sigh and wait a minute until I can hear her footsteps echo down the hall and quiet.
I turn back to the room. My suitcase is sitting at the end of the bed, the most colorful thing in the room. I bring my screen up to see the time. Just before twelve. I have a few minutes to unpack. So, I heft my suitcase onto the bed and unzip it. I start with my tops and put them in one drawer, then my pants and shorts. Socks and underwear go in one together. Then I grab my sweaters and hang them up in the closet. It's still quite empty but it looks more lived in.
I grab my toiletries and set them up on the counter and in the shower so when I need them I can use them right away.
I head to the door and open it enough to stick my head out. Making sure no one is around, I shut the door and head back to my suitcase. I clap my hands and the lights flicker off. Huh. I wasn't expecting that to work. Tapping my chip my screen pops up. The blue light filling the room. Once I've find the app I'm looking for I bring it up and let it scan the room. I make sure to hit every corner, every inch of space, even under the bed. But it finds no cameras. I guess that makes sense. Then I switch it to find bugs. But there aren't even any of those in here. I guess they weren't expecting a spy to move in with them. I smirk. Lucky for me then.
I clap my hands again and light floods into the room. Making sure I'm still alone I open the hidden zipper in my suitcase and bring out the folder. This folder holds all the information I need. I flip through it and then put it back in. The safest space for it is my suitcase.
Right as I'm rolling the suitcase into the closet my chip beeps. I grin. Right on time. I hop onto the bed and pull up the facetime app. It only takes it a minute to dial my aunt and have her face pop up in front of me.
"I'm in."
