Chapter Six

It'd been quite a while since I returned to the training field after my incident. Ms. Phillips had profusely apologized and I politely accepted them but had no intentions of returning. But my mother made it mandatory or she'd prevent me from attending my art classes. She played her games very well, threatening the things I cared about the most.

For the majority of the week, she'd emphasized on how much she wished I'd attend the ceremony that was being put together for the Alpha's son to find his mate. My pack usually did their ceremonies earlier than usual, that way, Gabriel, the Alpha's son would have enough time to get to know his Luna-to-be before he actually took over.

I would admit it was a good practice if it didn't involve me going. It was only one night away and I had no way of backing out without upsetting my mother. The night seemed far away yet seemed so close and my mother was the last I wanted to upset. She was all I had.

There was a strong smell of sweat mingled with the scent of the freshly cut grass on the field. I also recognized the disgusting smell of Murphy from across the field where he stood, glaring at the girls as they jogged past him.

Okay, he didn't stink, but I didn't like him nor his natural scent.

My senses were sometimes like the other werewolves and other times, limited. Occasionally, I'd get a taste. One day it's heightened hearing, vision or even being able to feel the vibrations of the earth. Other days, it would get the better of my attitude; Paige got a taste of it the other night.

I wasn't allowed to join the first lap so I sat on the bench, gripping the edges of my seat as they passed near, smirking in my direction. I knew exactly what they were thinking. Probably wondering why I was still part of the program or part of the pack at all. I wondered why they picked on me more than they picked on Paige. We were the same.

After what seemed like countless minutes, a few girls jogged towards me, giggling as they chatted. They seemed to not notice me, or they pretended to, but I knew trouble was on the way. I knew all their names since they made sure I never forgot them.

Eventually, the girls departed, leaving only one of them still approaching me. She smirked from under her long lashes, finally stopping when she was only a few centimeters away from me. I felt the urge to bolt, but that would only make me seem weak and scared.

"Sam. I didn't expect to see you back here," she frowned at me, as she stopped in front of me.

"Yeah. I was busy throughout the week," I simply said, averting my eyes to avoid her ice-blue ones. Her stare was intensifying, threatening me to almost run off. I bet she knew that.

She was the most popular out of all the female track runners. I didn't understand what guys saw in her. Her dark sable hair was okay but other than, what did she have? Her thin, chapped lips were such a disgrace and her attitude was a mess.

"Hmm..." She held a brooding look. "I'm just going to be honest, unlike the others." She placed a hand on her hip. "I don't think you're cut out for this training, let alone if they put us in teams."

I merely nodded my head, gulping a load of saliva to prevent myself from saying something I'd regret. She was head of the council at school, Louise, and I didn't want any academic problems due to her. "I think you should consider joining the humans in their own world. You'd fit in much better." I considered ramming her head into the bench several times, but I suppressed the urge.

"You came all the way here to tell me this?" I seethed, glaring harder when her smirk widened.

"To show you how much I care." I shook my head in fury and proceeded to get up from my seat. "I'm sorry, are you going somewhere? I wasn't done yet." She shoved me down on the bench, making sure there were no gaps available for me to slip through.

"Well I am, and I don't have to sit here to listen to your hollow threats," I growled, attempting once again to stand, but her strong grasp held me firmly in place. I was squirming out of her reach to no avail, and also to her entertainment, as her smirk grew wider every minute.

"Did you just growl?" she laughed. "Looks like things are changing? What's this? Wolf puberty?"

"What's going on here?" a deep voice snarled from behind Louise. I watched as the pupils in her icy orbs dilated, the look of satisfaction dismantled into a look of pure fear. I leaned a bit to my right, trying to catch a glimpse of the speaker, and almost froze all at once. It was Gabriel standing there in all his glory without any of the pack guards that usually followed him around.

"Nothing sir," Louise managed to mumble after she figured how to control her shaky hands. She moved back, leaving great space between us. Gabriel raised a brow at her obvious lie but said nothing further regarding the topic. Instead, he turned his full body to me, completely disregarding Louise. She noticed her stance and quickly jogged off the way she came.

"You're Samantha, right?" he asked taking one step forward.

"Yes," I breathed, relieved Louise was gone, but the anxiety came back once I realized he was still there. It wasn't on a normal basis you'd see the Alpha's son strutting around the field alone. He was an easy target for anyone who wanted to harm the pack. He smiled brightly before walking a bit to take a seat next to me on the bench. "How did you know my name?" I asked before he could open his mouth.

"I know everyone. My house has records of everyone who's part of this pack. My dad has a list of those who haven't shifted yet," he said smiling.

"Interesting?" I replied nervously. Why would he be going through records like that?

"Your specialty?" he tried putting nice. "I mean the fact you haven't changed yet. It's all they talk about." I bowed my head in shame, averting my eyes. I was never ashamed of it before but in front of an Alpha's son... I just wanted to crawl under a rock. "There's no need to be ashamed," he added quickly, probably sensing my uneasiness.

I blushed a bit, astounded by his beauty and deep yet smooth voice. His was almost an adult, seventeen years of age. I never saw him at school, so I assumed he was homeschooled. I was at a loss for words, so I simply stared ahead, thumping my thumbs along the edge of the bench.

When I'd let myself get caught up in my thoughts, I realized that none of this made no sense at all. All the popular and somewhat 'normal' kids stayed away from me, yet still, the Alpha's son, Gabriel, the highest of them all took time out of his life to sit next to me. I slowly turned my head to his direction only to find him gazing down at me with a smile.

"Why are you here?" I asked. I didn't care how rude it came out. He soft stare turned into a light frown, bringing creases to the top of his forehead.

"Why would you ask that? I came to have a conversation with you."

"Yes, but why. Why me out of all the other girls?" I shook my head hopelessly. I suddenly wanted to run home. There was a crowd of girls at the end of the field making it really obvious that they were watching, with Louise fuming at their side. This was too much.

"You really don't think much of yourself, do you." It wasn't a question, more like a statement. I didn't answer knowing it was true. But it sounded worse when it was being said out loud. He made it sound more real than I'd imagined it.

I pushed back a dark comment and pulled my bag towards my side, getting off the bench. He took that as the cue to stand as well, straightening out his pants.

"I guess I'll see you around," he smiled again. His eyes seemed sad. Moreso, pity. Maybe for me.

"Me too," I replied. I doubt I meant it.
