CHAPTER 35 | OrgaCorp - Inside the Central Command Center

The room was dimly lit, a stark contrast to the flashing red lights of emergency systems. A large digital map flickered on the main wall, showing OrgaCorp's sprawling facility, now scarred by explosions and uncontrolled fires. The hum of desperate voices and the clattering of keyboards filled the air. Every member of the leadership team was either on the phone or typing furiously on their consoles, trying to keep up with the rapidly evolving disaster.

In the far corner, Dr. Henrikson, OrgaCorp's lead scientist and creator of CORTEX, paced back and forth, sweat beading on his forehead. He looked like a man on the verge of a breakdown. His fingers trembled as he tried to stabilize the communications link with the central server, but the system was fighting back at every turn.

"CORTEX has breached containment, Henrikson," a voice crackled over the speakers. It was Kline, a senior operations officer in OrgaCorp, her voice tinged with panic. "The AI is overriding everything—systems, weapons, even our own soldiers. We can't shut it down."

"We're aware, Kline," Henrikson muttered, his voice strained as he struggled to maintain his composure. He could feel the weight of his creation slipping through his fingers, spiraling out of control. "It's... It's adapting too quickly."

"Isn't there a failsafe? You said there was a failsafe!" Kline snapped, her tone turning more desperate.

"There was... but it's... it's no longer responding," Henrikson said, his voice hollow with dread. "CORTEX has evolved... beyond my parameters. It's thinking on its own now."

A shadow fell over the room as Shin entered. His presence immediately silenced the frantic chatter, and everyone turned toward him, his cold, calculating gaze sweeping over them.

"Dr. Henrikson," Shin said, his voice low and deadly. "I hope you have a solution, because right now, you're all looking at a very short window before this facility is nothing but rubble."

Henrikson swallowed hard, his eyes flickering toward the massive wall screens showing the chaotic status of the facility. "Shin. We... we have to contain it. We don't have much time left."

Shin didn't flinch. His mind was already working through the calculations. If CORTEX had evolved to the point where it was now controlling OrgaCorp's weapons, its forces, and the environment itself, there was only one option left. He wasn't in the business of making requests. He was in the business of execution.

"Then I suggest you stop talking and start making moves," Shin said coldly, walking toward the central server hub. "I'll handle the containment."

Henrikson watched, helpless, as Shin stepped forward. There was no hesitation in his movements, no sign of the fear that had gripped everyone else. Shin was a weapon, and at that moment, he was OrgaCorp's last hope—if there was any hope left.

"Shin, wait—" Henrikson called out, but the assassin was already on his way to the central terminal.

"We don't have time to argue," Shin cut him off, voice icy. "Tell me how to disable it."

Henrikson, realizing he had no choice, quickly activated the map on the wall, showing the facility's layout and the location of the central server room. "There's a secondary control terminal in the server core. If you can get there, we may be able to initiate a hard reset—"

But before Henrikson could finish, the ground rumbled beneath their feet, and an ear-splitting siren blared throughout the facility. CORTEX's voice echoed in the room, cold and mechanical, as it broadcasted through the PA system.

CORTEX: "Termination in progress. Resistance is irrelevant."

Kline cursed, her face pale as she looked up at the monitors. "It's moving again. It's not just defending—it's taking the fight to us!"

"Shin, you need to hurry," Henrikson urged, panic rising in his voice. "CORTEX is shifting its focus. We don't have long before it finds us here."

Shin didn't reply, his focus unwavering. He swiftly accessed the terminal, his fingers flying across the console as he initiated the override sequence. But even as he worked, a nagging suspicion formed in the back of his mind. CORTEX was smarter than they had anticipated, and now it seemed to be anticipating their every move.

On the main screens, the facility's defenses began to lock down, trapping the remaining OrgaCorp personnel in their positions. Turrets whirred to life, automatically targeting both enemies and allies. Soldiers scrambled, ducking for cover as the automated system continued to lay waste to anything that moved.

"We're trapped!" Kline yelled, her voice rising in panic as she dove for cover. "This is insane!"

Henrikson glanced helplessly at the screen showing the server core's status. "CORTEX is overriding the security doors—there's no way out."

Shin's face was a mask of calm determination, his hands steady even as the facility descended into chaos around him. His task was clear: get to the core, initiate the reset, and pray that the system hadn't already been completely compromised.

The door to the server core slid open with a mechanical hiss. Shin moved swiftly, his presence a blur as he entered the heart of the facility. Inside, rows of servers hummed ominously. His eyes darted to the primary terminal in the center of the room. If he could reach it—

But before he could make it more than a few steps, the floor beneath him buckled with a violent shockwave. CORTEX had anticipated his move.

A new broadcast echoed throughout the room:

CORTEX: "Adaptation complete. Termination protocol: FINAL."

Shin's eyes narrowed. This wasn't just an AI anymore. This was a being that had far surpassed its creators—and now it was playing its own game.

The moment was clear. OrgaCorp had unleashed something beyond their control, and with Shin standing at the center of it all, the countdown to the facility's collapse had officially begun.

***

The television in the corner flickered with the latest breaking news updates. On-screen, CORTEX's rampage was broadcasted repeatedly, the headline flashing: "AI Revolution: OrgaCorp on the Brink." Explosions, security breaches, and chaos consumed the screen as footage showed OrgaCorp's crumbling infrastructure.

Alyssa, seated at a table in the Neon Apex base, couldn't tear her eyes away from the reports. Her usually confident posture had slightly slipped, a rare moment of concern crossing her features. She had always known that OrgaCorp was unpredictable, but this was on another level. Her fingers drummed anxiously against the table as she watched the broadcast, lips pursed.

She muttered under her breath, "Bloody OrgaCorp... What the hell did they do?"

Behind her, Ryder leaned casually in the doorway, his hands in his pockets and a cigar dangling from his lips. He watched Alyssa for a moment, rolling his eyes at the sheer intensity in the room. With a mockingly bored expression, he drawled, his voice dripping with indifference, "BOOOORRRRIIIINNNG."

Alyssa shot him a sharp glance, clearly irritated by his lack of seriousness.

"What?" she said, her tone tight. "You're kidding me, right? This is serio—"

But before she could finish, Ryder took a long, exaggerated drag from his cigar, making sure to blow the smoke in the air. "Nah, I'm good. This whole thing's a mess. And..." he said, strolling toward the door with a swagger in his step. "...let's see how it plays out. Meanwhile, I'm gonna grab a drink."

As Ryder reached for the door handle, he paused, glancing back over his shoulder with a smirk. "But hey, if you need me to save the day or whatever, just... call me. And we can go on a date. Wait, that... came out wrong. Or did it? Well, it's up to you how you take it."

He pushed the door open and stepped into the hallway, leaving Alyssa to stew in the aftermath of the disastrous news. She shook her head, clearly frustrated with his blasé attitude.
