CHAPTER 16 | OFFER OF DECEPTION - THE REJECTION EDITION
"You're a good agent, Kara," Alix began, her tone deceptively calm. "OrgaCorp's top sniper—accurate, loyal. If only you knew what they truly are and how they're using you.
"But maybe you're just too loyal to see it. Too loyal to realize they'd throw you away without a second thought if it suited their agenda.
Kara's brow furrowed, her grip tightening around her weapon. "What are you talking about?"
"Does it matter? You wouldn't change your mind, right? So do what you have to."
The door creaked open, and in walked Reinfield, one of OrgaCorp's senior officials, known for his cold intelligence and ruthless devotion to the organization. He moved with calculated precision, suggesting that every step and every look was orchestrated for maximum intimidation.
RYDER NARRATING—Ah, great—Reinfield's here to ruin my day. Let the villain monologue commence—his twisted philosophy to remind us why we're fighting in the first place.!
"Ah, Alix Navarro—our esteemed agent," he began, a sly smile curling at the corners of his lips, "...the infamous Silver Fox?"
Alix's jaw clenched, but she refused to acknowledge the name. She wouldn't give them the satisfaction.
Reinfield's smile widened, a flicker of amusement in his otherwise stoic expression. "So fierce. Just like always. Which is why this offer comes to you from the highest ranks. We're willing to... overlook recent offenses. In exchange, of course, for the files."
His eyes locked on hers, unblinking. "Imagine this as a clean slate, Ms. Navarro. You can come back, reclaim your place, and restore your reputation. Just one small action, and it all goes away."
RYDER NARRATING—This is like watching a poorly made commercial for a bad reality show. The classic villain pitch. "Join us, and your life will magically improve!" What a cliché.
Alix's voice was low but steady. "Trade my integrity for a position in your ranks? You must think I'm desperate." She let out a calm laugh. "I fight for what's right."
Reinfield chuckled, unfazed by her words. He leaned back, crossing one leg over the other, watching her as if she were a particularly interesting specimen under a microscope. "So self-righteous. But have you ever stopped to wonder if 'right' is just a perspective?" His tone turned mocking. "You talk about what's right, but I've seen your kind before, Miss Fox. So convinced of their own virtue, so blind to their own flaws."
Her jaw tensed, but Reinfield pressed on, undeterred. "Tell me," he continued, his voice silk and steel, "how many lives have you sacrificed in the name of 'justice'? How many times have you looked the other way, rationalizing that the end justifies the means?"
Alix's fists clenched, her fingernails biting into her palms. His words were infuriating, but a part of her couldn't shake the sting of truth buried within them.
"You like to believe you're different," Reinfield said, leaning in closer. "But you're not. The only difference between you and us is that we know we're on the wrong side. We accept it, even thrive in it. You? You fight to protect people who don't even care if you live or die."
"You're wrong," Alix bit out, though the words sounded weaker than she'd intended. "I fight for what matters, for people who can't fight for themselves. I'm not like you all."
"Are you sure?" Reinfield's tone was almost pitying. "Or are you just fighting for yourself, for your own sense of redemption?"
Alix's silence was her only answer, her mind swirling with anger and doubt. She'd given up everything to stand for what was right... but was it still not enough?
RYDER NARRATING—Nice job, Alix. Nothing like an existential crisis to spice up the drama. Maybe next, she'll start reciting poetry about the futility of life.
Reinfield smiled, sensing her hesitation. "It doesn't matter now, Silver Fox. You've chosen your path." He stood up, gesturing to a pair of guards by the door. "You've become a threat to OrgaCorp, and that means we can't let you walk out of here. You'll be executed for treason by morning."
Alix remained silent, her expression blank, as if she hadn't even heard him.
"Ms. Navarro," he began, a faint smile curling at the corners of his lips, "do you really think you can turn your back on OrgaCorp after everything we've done for you? After the resources we've poured into your training and missions? You think you can just walk away?"
Alix stared blankly at him, her mind drifting.
RYDER NARRATING—Great, another one of those villain monologues. Classic! Just what we need—more theatrics. I half expect him to whip out a PowerPoint presentation next, detailing the 'Benefits of Staying Loyal to OrgaCorp.'
Cassie's laughter echoed in her head, a bright beacon in the oppressive darkness of her situation. She could almost see Cassie, her vibrant energy filling the room during late-night missions, where they'd spent hours strategizing over blueprints and intel. Alix remembered how Cassie leaned in close, her laughter infectious, making the stress of their mission melt away.
RYDER NARRATING—Oh, remember that time we had to infiltrate that gala? You were so intent on blending in, and I ended up wearing that ridiculous dress! Classic Cassie, turning every mission into a fashion show!
"Remember that time we had to infiltrate that gala? You were so intent on blending in, and I ended up wearing that ridiculous dress!" Cassie's voice rang in her ears, and Alix couldn't help but smile at the memory. The lighthearted banter had eased the tension, transforming the stressful mission into a night of camaraderie. Cassie had a talent for turning the bleakest situations into something bearable, her laughter cutting through the tension like a warm knife through butter.
Reinfield leaned forward, his eyes glinting with challenge. "You think your little defiance will change anything? You're valuable to us, but you're also replaceable. Do you really want to end up like those who've crossed us before?"
Alix barely registered his words, instead focusing on Julian. The way he got nervous around her, fidgeting with his drink, stealing glances but never quite meeting her eyes. There was that moment when he'd smiled at her, his cheeks flushing, and for a heartbeat, she thought he might actually like her back. The way he brushed his hair away from his face, revealing those intense blue eyes, made her heart race.
She could picture them together at the agency, a comfortable silence enveloping them as they worked on a mission. The shared glances, the fleeting touches when they passed each other equipment—each moment a spark that ignited something within her. Memories flooded back—shared smiles over takeout, the sparkle in Julian's eyes that made her feel seen in a world that often overlooked her..
"Think about it, Ms. Navarro. You could have everything back—your status, your power. All you have to do is give us what we want," Reinfield pressed, oblivious to her distraction. "You could be on the top again, the infamous Silver Fox, not just some traitor hiding in the shadows."
She wasn't lurking in the shadows—she was tearing them down, fighting for a world free of... Orga—She stopped, her focus slipping for just a second. Wait, where was I? she thought, quickly catching herself.
"Do you really want to throw away all the potential you have? You're fighting for nothing, Ms. Navarro! For people who will abandon you the second things get tough!" Reinfield continued, his voice rising in frustration.
The memories rushed back—Cassie urging her to take a chance on Julian, pushing her to ask him out. What if he didn't feel the same? Yet now, standing on the precipice of betrayal, she knew she would never find out if she stayed shackled to OrgaCorp.
"...You think you can defy us?" Reinfield's voice cut through her thoughts, but Alix barely registered the words.
Images danced through her mind: sipping beer with Cassie, their shared dreams bubbling over in laughter, and the time she had nearly worked up the courage to ask Julian for a date—his shy smile lighting up her heart in a way that made everything else fade away.
Alix remembered the way Julian's cheeks flushed when she caught him staring, his nervousness both endearing and exhilarating. Cassie's teasing grin as she nudged Alix closer to Julian, urging her to take that leap, echoed in her thoughts.
"You're making a grave mistake, Ms. Navarro. You think you can endure this? The pain, the loneliness? We have..."
...Where was I again? she thought, recalling the warmth of their shared moments, the carefree laughter with Cassie during late-night missions, their jokes and banter easing the tension, the way Julian's eyes sparkled with kindness. Loneliness? That was OrgaCorp's game, not hers.
"...Your defiance will cost you," Reinfield warned, his voice low and menacing.
Alix allowed a faint smile to flicker on her lips, thoughts of Cassie and Julian filling her with warmth.
As Reinfield turned to leave, he looked back, offering her one last, twisted smile. "Then you'll die as the self-righteous martyr you imagine yourself to be. OrgaCorp will be just fine without you."
The door closed behind him, and the echo of the lock clicking into place left Alix in the dark.
