CHAPTER 14 | A WALK IN THE PARK - LURKING IN THE DARK
The wind whipped around the rooftop as Alyssa paced, her eyes darting across the skyline. She couldn't shake the feeling of dread creeping in. "I'm not working with you, Ryder. Not now, not ever. You're the last person I want by my side right now."
Ryder leaned against a wall, arms crossed, a cocky smirk plastered on his face. "Trust me, the feeling's mutual. I've got better things to do than babysit some reckless wannabe hero."
Alyssa shot him a glare. "This isn't about us, you idiot! Alix is in danger, and I need your help to get her out of there."
"Why should I care?" Ryder shrugged, feigning indifference. "You pulled a gun on Julian, my friend. Hypocritical much? You don't get to play the hero after that."
Alyssa's frustration boiled over. "This isn't about Julian! Alix is trapped with OrgaCorp, and I can't do this alone. You're a skilled agent; I need someone who can keep up."
Ryder's expression soured as he glanced back at Alyssa, who was pacing furiously, her frustration boiling over. "You seriously think I'm going to risk my life to help you? Especially after you pulled a gun on my friend?"
"Look, I care about one thing," Ryder said, pushing off the wall and stepping closer, his tone turning serious. "And that's my payment. Helping you rescue Alix doesn't exactly fit into my agenda right now."
Alyssa stopped mid-stride, her eyes narrowing. "Julian is not just your friend! He's the reason Alix is in danger. If you cared about anyone other than your paycheck, you'd understand that!"
Ryder scoffed, crossing his arms. "And you think waving your gun around will help? You're too emotional to think straight. I get it; you're worried about your friend. But that doesn't mean you can threaten people who might actually be able to help."
"Help?" Alyssa echoed, incredulous. "What do you know about helping? You only care about getting your cut and getting out of this mess. Alix is in trouble, and all you can think about is yourself!"
"I'm a mercenary, Alyssa. I don't do this for charity. If I'm going to risk my life, I need to be compensated." He shrugged, his tone dismissive. "And last I checked, pulling a gun on my friend doesn't exactly inspire loyalty."
Alyssa's fists clenched at her sides. "This isn't about loyalty! It's about saving Alix! You don't get to stand there and pretend like you have any moral high ground."
"Then what do you propose we do?" Ryder asked, raising an eyebrow. "You're all fired up with no plan. I'm not risking my neck on some emotional crusade."
She stepped closer, a fire igniting in her eyes. "This isn't just some mission to me! Alix is my friend, and I will do whatever it takes to save her. Even if it means going into OrgaCorp alone!"
Ryder shook his head, smirking. "Going in alone? That's a one-way ticket to disaster. You'd be dead before you even get close to their headquarters."
Alyssa faltered, the weight of his words crashing down on her. "Then what do you suggest? Just sit back and let Alix suffer because you're too busy counting your coins?"
"I'm suggesting you cool it with the gun and let's think this through. If we're going to do this, we need a solid plan." Ryder glanced at her, his expression softening just a touch. "And we need to work together, whether you like it or not."
She hesitated, her resolve wavering. "So, you'll help? Even after everything?"
"I'm in it for the payout," he admitted, rolling his eyes. "But if that payout includes saving your friend, then sure. Just don't expect me to hold your hand through it. Besides," he added, a flicker of something softer in his eyes, "I've seen what OrgaCorp does to people like Alix. I wouldn't want that for anyone."
Alyssa took a deep breath, trying to suppress the anger that simmered just below the surface. "Fine. But you better keep your head in the game. This is about Alix, not your bottom line."
"Deal," Ryder said, a smirk creeping back onto his face. "Now let's figure out how to get inside OrgaCorp without pointing the gun at anyone."
As they started strategizing, Alyssa couldn't shake the feeling that they were both treading a dangerous line. She would save Alix, no matter the cost, even if it meant working alongside someone who didn't share her passion or urgency.
But deep down, a flicker of doubt remained-could they really trust each other in this chaotic world of espionage, or would their conflicting motivations tear them apart just when they needed to stand united?
The dimly lit corridors of OrgaCorp's headquarters felt oppressive as Alyssa, Ryder, and Cassie crept through the building, each step measured and silent. The air was thick with tension, especially after their earlier confrontation.
"Stay close," Ryder said, glancing back at Alyssa, who was bristling with determination. "And try not to shoot anyone this time, okay?"
Alyssa shot him a glare. "That was one time! Besides, I wasn't actually going to shoot him; I just wanted to make a point."
"Sure," Ryder replied, smirking. "A point made with a gun is a point made loud and clear. And we wouldn't want anyone to think you're just here for the dramatic moments."
"Very funny," Alyssa muttered, her focus already shifting back to the task at hand. "Let's just get the intel and then we can look for Alix."
Cassie, trailing behind, couldn't help but chime in, "And maybe, just maybe, you two can put your guns away long enough to cooperate?"
Ryder snorted, "Good luck with that. I'm not here to babysit."
"Who asked you to?" Alyssa snapped back. "I'm not looking for a hero; I just want to find my friend."
"Focus, people," Cassie interrupted, her tone a mix of urgency and humor. "We can argue about whose fault this is later. Right now, let's find what we came for."
They reached a door marked "Research & Development." Ryder pulled out a small device and set it against the keypad, bypassing the security with ease. "After you, ladies. Just try to keep it quiet."
Alyssa stepped inside, her heart pounding as she scanned the room filled with high-tech equipment. "No mention of Alix," she muttered, rifling through papers. Where are you, Alix?
"Hey!" Ryder called from the console, his voice breaking through her thoughts. "Looks like they're working on a new prototype related to Project Genesis. Still no sign of Alix, though."
Alyssa's heart sank. "We can't leave without her. We need to find her now!"
Ryder rolled his eyes. "Listen, I'm not here for a rescue mission. I care about the payout and nothing else."
Cassie nudged Ryder playfully, "You know, for a guy who claims not to care, you sure seem invested in this whole mess."
He shot her a look, irritation flashing in his eyes. "I'm just trying to stay alive. You two can play the hero all you want, but I'm not getting shot because of someone else's drama."
"Drama? You think this is drama?" Alyssa said, anger rising. "I'm talking about saving my friend!"
"Okay, okay," Cassie said, stepping between them. "Let's keep our heads cool. We grab the intel, and then Alyssa can go on her crusade."
With a reluctant nod, Ryder pocketed the files and led the way toward the exit. "Nothing screams 'relaxation' like a trip to a villain's lair,"
As they approached the exit, the faint sound of footsteps echoed in the corridor. Ryder raised a hand, signaling them to stop. They pressed against the wall, hearts pounding, as a group of OrgaCorp guards passed by, oblivious to their presence.
"Close call," Alyssa whispered once they were gone. "I didn't know you could hold your breath that long."
"Years of practice," Ryder replied, smirking. "You should try it sometime. Less yelling, more stealth."
Cassie snorted, "And less pointing guns at each other."
They hurried out of the building, the cool night air washing over them. The adrenaline faded, leaving behind a sense of urgency mixed with relief.
"Now what?" Ryder asked, glancing at the intel.
"We regroup and figure out where they might have taken Alix," Alyssa said, her determination unwavering.
"Fine," Ryder said, shrugging. "But just remember, I'm not doing this for you. I want my payday."
Cassie grinned. "And I thought you were here for the excitement."
"Excitement is overrated," Ryder replied, rolling his eyes.
As they made their way to a safe location, Alyssa couldn't help but smile. "You know, for someone who claims to care only about money, you're kind of a decent guy when you're not being insufferable."
"Don't tell anyone," he said with a grin. "I have a reputation to maintain."
With a newfound sense of camaraderie-however reluctant-it seemed they might just pull through this together. Alix, I promise I will find you, Alyssa thought, feeling a mix of hope and determination swell within her.
