CHAPTER 1 | OPPOSITES ATTRACT - ADDITION AND SUBTRACT
ALIX NAVARROW - AKA SILVER FOX (ORGACORP'S TOP AGENT)
JULIAN LAKE - (ORGACORP'S LOW LEVEL TECH EMPLOYEE)
Alix Navarro, or Silver Fox as she was known in the world of covert operations, walked confidently through the modern glass hallways of OrgaCorp. Her shoes clicked against the floor with a sense of purpose that echoed as clear as her reputation. She was a woman who stood out with striking black hair and fern green eyes, but what was even more alluring about her was the confidence she carried. As she walked, people's heads moved not just because of her beauty, but because of the aura she possessed. She was not just a typical spy; she knew her worth in the world of shadows.
Ryder (the narrator): And let's be real-when you've got a nickname like Silver Fox, you've got to have some serious skills. I mean, the woman exudes confidence! But today? Today feels different, doesn't it?
That being said, there was something different about today. Rather than feeling enthused about going on a new mission, Alix felt dread for some reason. She was called in for a private briefing, which was usual, but what was so peculiar was the feeling of dread which was palpable. Something was definitely wrong.
Ryder: You know that feeling when you're about to dive into a pool and just know it's freezing? Yeah, that's what Alix was feeling. Trust your gut, Silver Fox!
It's as if, after years in the business, intuition started to kick in. This was, however, fully outrageous. OrgaCorp didn't deploy her for easily manageable tactical jobs. Something else entirely was going on here, and nobody was speaking about it.
The elevator doors slid open, revealing the opulent but cold interior of the executive conference room. It was a place designed to remind everyone who entered that they were at the pinnacle of power.
Seated at the head of the long table was Director Renfield, the man who handled OrgaCorp's most sensitive operations and the one who had given Silver Fox her most dangerous assignments. His expression was unreadable, as always, though Alix could sense a tension in his posture. The room itself was stark, dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling city, a metropolis of steel and glass that mirrored OrgaCorp's sleek professionalism.
Ryder: This room? Total power play. If you want to intimidate your agents, make sure they're sitting across from the director in a place that screams, "You're in deep, and I hold the cards."
As Alix took her seat across from Renfield, her eyes flicked to the massive screen on the wall behind him. It displayed surveillance footage of a boy sitting in a café, unaware of the camera tracking his every move.
"Is that Julian?!" Alix asked, her voice calm but laced with curiosity.
Renfield didn't answer right away. Instead, he pressed a button, and the image zoomed in on the boy. "Julian Lake," he said, his voice as cold as the room itself. "Low-level employee in the tech department. You've probably seen him around."
Ryder: Oh, Julian Lake-your average guy who just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. But is he really? Hmm...
Alix nodded; the name immediately resonated with her. Julian Lake-she knew him well. He was the type who blended into the background, invisible among the power players and high-stakes operatives that made up OrgaCorp's workforce. A quiet, unassuming tech guy, he was more comfortable behind a screen than out in the field. She had seen him at the office, always focused on his work.
"And why is he on our radar?" Alix asked, though she suspected she already knew the answer.
Renfield's eyes narrowed slightly. "We believe he's a security risk. There's evidence he's accessed classified files-files that could compromise some of our most critical operations."
Ryder: A security risk? For a guy who can barely make eye contact? I mean, come on! It's like handing a bomb to a toddler!
Alix felt a familiar surge of adrenaline. "So, what's the assignment?"
Renfield leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving the screen. "Eliminate him."
Ryder: Whoa! Did you hear that? 'Eliminate.' A nice, polite way of saying 'take him out.' But for a tech guy? Something's off, people!
The words, though delivered with the same cool detachment as any other mission briefing, felt heavier than usual. Alix had carried out kill orders before-eliminating threats was part of her job, part of the Silver Fox mystique. But this target... Julian Lake... something didn't sit right.
"Eliminate?" Alix repeated, keeping her tone steady. "Isn't that a bit extreme for a tech guy?"
Renfield's expression hardened. "We don't take chances, Miss Fox. He's accessed information that could destroy us. We can't allow that kind of liability."
Ryder: Oh boy, now we're talking about high stakes! But seriously, what could this kid possibly know that's worth a death sentence?
Alix nodded, but the unease in her gut grew stronger. Normally, she would accept the mission without question, but this time, doubt crept into her mind. What could a person like Julian possibly know that warranted his death? And why was OrgaCorp so quick to silence him?
Still, Alix's reputation as Silver Fox was built on loyalty and efficiency. She recalled a time when a mission had felt similarly off, when her gut instinct had screamed for her to stop. Ignoring it had cost her-she'd lost a teammate. Now, as doubt nagged at her, she wondered if this mission would be another dangerous miscalculation. Did Julian deserve to die? What if he wasn't the threat they believed him to be?
