The faint glow of the sunset filtered through the blinds of Raddy's bedroom, casting warm streaks of gold and crimson on the walls. The room was simple, like its owner—neatly arranged dumbbells lined one corner, a punching bag hung near the door, and a small, worn shelf held a few trophies from past races. Despite its orderly appearance, tonight, the room seemed cozier, almost intimate, as if it were holding its breath for what was about to unfold.
Raddy sat on the edge of his bed, his red horns catching the last rays of sunlight. His thick brows furrowed slightly, not from his usual frustration but something else—an anxious excitement that bubbled inside him. His hand absentmindedly brushed over the neatly folded blanket beside him, a nervous tick he couldn't quite shake.
Across the room, Durple was perched on the windowsill, his purple tail swaying gently as he looked out at the darkening sky. The soft hum of his melody filled the air, calming yet electrifying. He turned to glance at Raddy, his mismatched pupils catching the light in a way that made Raddy's heart race.
"You know," Durple said softly, his voice like a gentle breeze, "it's been a long time since I've seen you so quiet."
Raddy let out a short laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, well... maybe it's because you're here. You have this... way of making everything seem calmer."
Durple tilted his head, a teasing smile tugging at his lips. "Is that a compliment, Raddy? Are you saying I'm good for you?"
Raddy's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red. "Don't twist my words, Durple," he grumbled, though his voice lacked its usual bite. "You're... fine, I guess."
Durple chuckled and hopped off the windowsill, his steps light and graceful as he crossed the room to sit beside Raddy. Their shoulders brushed, and Raddy felt his breath hitch. Durple's presence was warm, soothing, and yet it set his nerves alight in the best way possible.
"Raddy," Durple began, his voice softer now, "you don't have to pretend with me. I see through that tough act of yours."
Raddy turned to look at him, his amber eyes meeting Durple's mismatched gaze. "I'm not pretending," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I just... don't know how to say it."
"Say what?" Durple prompted, leaning in ever so slightly.
Raddy hesitated, his fingers gripping the edge of the bed. He had spent so much of his life building walls, keeping others at arm's length, but with Durple, those walls felt paper-thin. He took a deep breath, his voice steady despite the storm inside him.
"That you're... different. You make me feel like I don't have to be alone all the time. Like... maybe it's okay to let someone in."
Durple's eyes softened, and he reached out, his hand gently resting on Raddy's. "You don't have to be alone, Raddy," he said, his voice filled with quiet conviction. "I'm here. And I'm not going anywhere."
For a moment, the world outside seemed to disappear. It was just the two of them, sitting side by side, their hands intertwined. Raddy felt the tension in his shoulders melt away as he leaned into Durple's touch, his heart pounding in a way that wasn't from exercise for once.
Durple leaned closer, his frills brushing against Raddy's cheek as he whispered, "You're not as tough as you think, you know."
Raddy chuckled, a rare, genuine smile tugging at his lips. "And you're not as calm as you pretend to be."
Their laughter mingled, filling the room with warmth. Slowly, tentatively, Raddy turned his head, their faces mere inches apart. Durple's mismatched eyes sparkled with something that made Raddy's chest ache—in the best way possible.
"Durple..." Raddy began, but he didn't get to finish. Durple closed the distance between them, his lips brushing against Raddy's in a kiss that was both soft and electrifying.
For once, Raddy didn't pull away. He let himself sink into the moment, into the warmth of Durple's presence. When they finally parted, Raddy's cheeks were flushed, and his heart was racing, but he didn't feel the need to hide it.
"You're insufferable," Raddy muttered, though his tone was filled with affection.
"And you're impossible," Durple teased, his smile radiant.
As the night deepened, they stayed there in Raddy's bedroom, their hearts beating in sync, finding solace and something more in each other's company. For the first time in a long time, Raddy felt like he wasn't alone—and it was all because of Durple.
