Personality:
The eldest child of the Arryn clan, Cassana is a strong-willed and independent woman in every possible way. Queen Cassana is the matriarch of a large family, and at 40 years of age, stubborn and self-assured. She's an intelligent, crafty widow who will not be governed by men, and believes she's earned that right, both by birth and by paying her dues through years of marriage and raising children.
Cassana is both classy and attractive enough to befit her station, but puts little stock in the social mannerisms of the day. She has a sharp tongue and a sarcastic sense of humour, and has often unknowingly made enemies simply by putting someone in their place. She isn't the type to have friends that she pours out her heart to, but instead courts allies that will support her house and family if needed. Though the Arryns are now one of the clans ruling the Seven Kingdoms, she's acutely aware how fortune can change on a dime, and never takes anything for granted. A loving person at heart, she can be both tough and ambitious, but nothing matters to her more than her house and her family.
Cassana has absolutely no desire to remarry, as she believes a widowed woman with power is in possession of the greatest freedom women are allowed. If she has lovers, she is discrete enough to keep both her past and her present private, for the sake of her children and their reputations.
Background:
Cassana is the first-born child of House Arryn and has two siblings, though her younger brother was killed in a duel, provoked by the fiery temper and carelessness with remarks that he shared with Cassana. Her mother was an auburn beauty of no standing or position in the world, and the marriage of her parents was looked down upon by many. The Arryn clan has a long-standing history of not caring what others think, passed down through generations. Cassana's parents died three days apart, suffering from a strange sort of influenza. Though rumoured perhaps the pair were poisoned, they had no violent enemies and lived to a respectable old age for the time period. Cassana has no reason to believe their deaths were anything else but natural causes, and also that people gossip too much.
She married the Lord of House Royce, and though he was handsome and charming enough for her to consider him a good match, it was a largely political arrangement proposed by her father. House Royce is among the firmly loyal Vassals to the Arryns. The couple lived a relatively normal life, though Cassana's youngest child died in childbirth and left her unable to have further children, to her great dismay. She worries that only having two living children is not enough to further the legacy of the Arryn name, and despite being a strong and fearless Queen, feels a sense of failure as a woman. Because of this, she is somewhat overbearing when it comes to seeing her children married and with children of their own as soon as possible.
Cassana's husband died when she was only 35, injured when falling off of his horse and subsequent infection. Apothecary-related knowledge was somewhat lacking in those days. She's since devoted her time to her children and a growing interest in the politics of the Kingdom, her ambition growing the more time she spends as Queen. Perhaps she's a brilliant strategist, or possibly needed a hobby to fill her time--no one knows. She grows angry and temperamental when underestimated, and sometimes gives the impression she might pick up a sword and fight for her honour herself.
In general, Cassana is a likeable and sympathetic woman who suffers the great misfortune of being a Queen, not a King. She can be blunt, judgmental, and unyielding in her opinions, but she is also a highly intelligent and perceptive woman who is aware of being chronically underestimated. In whatever game is being played, she is the type others want on her side, a sensible woman that can wield more power than even she knows.
Jane Austen would be proud. <3
